Unpacking your BT Response 75
If anything is missing, please contactyour place of purchase immediately.
● BT Response 75 digital answering machinewith telephone line cable attached.
● Plug mounted, 13 amp mains adaptor.
● Screws and wall plugs for wall mounting.
The display will flash for 38 seconds. It will then show the normal ‘nomessages’ display. The display will flashslowly until any button is pressed.

Setting upFollow these steps to set up your BT Response 75 ready for use
Plan the location of yourBT Response 75
Situate your BT Response 75 closeenough to the phone and mains powersockets so that the cables will reach. To prevent the mains cable being
pulled out accidentally, place the cablebehind the clip on the back of the unit.
If you do not have a modern phonesocket, call Freephone 0800 800 150and ask for a BT engineer to come andfit the correct socket.
This is a chargeable service.

Before inserting the back-up batteryyou must ensure that your unit isconnected to the mains power.
The back-up battery (9V alkaline notsupplied) ensures that all settings andmessages are saved for up to six hoursin the event of a power cut.
If the back-up battery runs out, or nobattery is fitted, then in the event of apower failure your BT Response 75 willrevert to its original settings andmessages will be lost.
If the battery is low the “Battery Low”light will come on.
Insert a 9V alkaline battery into thebattery compartment.
You will now be able to use yourtelephone as normal.
Your BT Response 75 is now readyto use.

Your BT Response 75 Plus battery lowlight, located beside the display,indicates back-up battery strength.
The LED will light up when the batteryis low. It also remains lit when no back-up battery is inserted.

Safety instructions
• Simply clean your BT Response 75with a damp (not wet) cloth, or anantistatic wipe. Never use householdpolish as this may damage theproduct. Never use a dry cloth asthis may cause static shock.
• Only use the power supply includedwith the product. Using anunauthorised power supply unit willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the answer machine. The itemnumber for the power supply unit is872300.
• Do not open the BT Response 75. This could expose you to highvoltages or other risks.
• This product should not be usednear emergency/intensive caremedical equipment and should notbe used by people with pacemakers.
• Never dispose of batteries in a fire.There is a serious risk of explosionand/or the release of highly toxicchemicals.
• Do not expose to direct sunlight.
• The product may heat up. Thisis normal. However, we recommend that you do not place the product onantique/veneered wood to avoiddamage.
• Do not stand your product on carpets or other surfaces whichgenerate fibres, or place it in locationspreventing free flow of air over itssurfaces.
• Do not submerge any part of yourproduct in water and do not use it indamp or humid conditions, such asin bathrooms.
• Do not expose your product to fire,explosive or other hazardousconditions.
• There is a slight chance that yourphone could be damaged by anelectrical storm. We recommend thatyou unplug the power and telephoneline cord for the duration of the stormas damage is not covered by theguarantee.

Using your BT Response 75
You can switch your answeringmachine on and off or set it toAnswer Only mode so callersare unable to leave messages.
Press buttons in the order shown
To switch the answering machineon or off:Press the Answer on/offbutton. You will hear “Answeron” or “Answer off”.
When off, the display shows asingle dash.
When on, the display showsthe number of messagesreceived e.g 5.
Press the Answer on/offbutton again to switch betweenon and off.
To set the answering machineto Answer Only mode:Press the Ans. Mode button.
You will hear “Answer Only on”and the display will show .Callers will not be able to leavea message.
If you press the Ans. Modebutton again you will hear“Answer only off ”. Your BTResponse 75 will return toAnswer On mode and displaythe number of messagesreceived.
Answering machine controls
The message playback volumecan be set to a level suitablefor you.
The original volume setting is3 (mid-level).

If you alter the volume during playback of a message, the beep does not soundbut the volume will change accordingly.If the volume is below mid-volume, it will automatically return to the mid-volume setting when any buttonsare pressed (for example, if a message isplayed back). The volume is unaffectedduring remote access or call screening.

The outgoing message is the message a caller hears when your BT Response75 answers a call.
Your BT Response 75 comes with 2 pre-recorded outgoing messages. Whenset to Answer On your BT Response 75will announce, “Hello, your call cannotbe taken at the moment, so please leaveyour message after the tone”.
When set to Answer Only your BTResponse 75 will announce, “Hello, yourcall cannot be taken at the moment andyou cannot leave a message, so please calllater” and they will not be able to leave amessage.
You can use these outgoing messagesor you may prefer to record your own.
Outgoing message
Select the answer mode in which you want to record yourown outgoing message:
Answer on/off or
Answer Only.
Your 2 outgoing messages willbe stored separately and theoutgoing message played willdepend on the mode you haveselected.
You can record an outgoingmessage of up to 2 minuteslong.
Press and hold the OGMbutton. Your BT Response 75will beep and the display willshow r.
Keep holding down the OGMbutton and record yourmessage clearly about 15-30cms from the microphone.
When you have finishedrecording, release the OGMbutton. You will hear a longbeep and your message will beplayed back to you. You willthen hear a long beep andyour BT Response 75 willreturn to the answer modeselected.

The counter will display thenumber of messages that havebeen recorded in the memory.
If you have received 10 ormore messages the displaywill flash 9 to indicate this.Please see page 23 for a guideto the display.
To set the answer delay

The Time Saver setting can avoidyou the cost of a call when accessingyour machine remotely from anexternal telephone.
Your BT Response 75 is set toanswer calls after 4 rings
You can change the number ofrings before your BT Response75 will answer a call. You havea choice of between 2-9 ringsand Time Saver.
When set to Time Saver yourBT Response 75 will answerafter 6 rings if no newmessages have been recorded,or 2 rings if new messageshave been recorded (for moreinformation on remote access,see page 18).

To delete your outgoingmessage
You can delete either of youroutgoing messages and returnto one of the pre-recordedoutgoing messages.
Ensure that you select thecorrect outgoing message thatyou want to delete. For example,if you want to delete theAnswer Only outgoing messagemake sure your BT Response75 is set to Answer Only first.
Press the OGM button.
During playback of youroutgoing message press theDelete button.
Your OGM will stop playing,you will hear a short beep andyour BT Response 75 willreturn back to the pre-recorded outgoing message

Receiving messages
To receive incoming messages
After following the set-up procedureyour BT Response 75 is ready toreceive messages.
To check the answer delaysetting
Press the Skip� button.
You BT Response 75 willannounce the current ringdelay setting and show thesetting on the display.

Your BT Response 75 willautomatically record anincoming message when it is connected to your phonesocket and is set to ‘Answer On’.
When your BT Response 75has received new messages(or memos) it will beep (see‘Audible Message Alert to switchoff ’) and the display will showthe number of messagesreceived. If you have morethan 9 messages, the displaywill flash 9.
If the memory is full then it willannounce, “Memory full, thankyou for calling” and disconnectthe line.
Your BT Response 75 canrecord up to 30 messages andmemos, within a totalrecording time of 36 minutes. If the memorycapacity is full, the display willflash F and your answeringmachine will not record furthermessages.
Please note
Two minutes is the maximum timeallowed for each incoming message.If the maximum message length isreached, your BT Response 75 willannounce, “Thank you for calling”and disconnect the line.
To record a memo

You can use your BT Response75 to record a memo whichcan be played back by anotheruser.
A memo can be of any length,up to the maximum recordingtime available (36 minutes).
Press and hold the Play/memobutton.
Your BT Response 75 will beepand the display flashes ‘r’.
Keep holding the Play/memobutton and record your memoclearly, about 15-30 cms fromthe microphone.
To end the recording releasethe Play/memo button.
Your BT Response 75 storesmemos and treats them in thesame way as incoming messages.

To play back, delete or skip forward orbackward through memos, follow theinstructions for playing back messages(see below).
Press the Play/memo button.Your BT Response 75 willannounce “You have Xmessages”.
Messages and memos areannounced and played back inthe order they were received.
During message playback themessage indicator shows thenumber of the message beingplayed. 9 flashes if themessage is number 10 or more.
Press the Skip� button to skip forward to the beginningof the next message.
Press the � Skip button onceto return to the start of thecurrent message or twice to goback to the previous message.
Press the Pause button topause playback. The displaywill flash P. Press it again toresume playback.
When all your messages havebeen played, your BT Response75 announces “End of messages”and the message indicatorcounts down from 8 to 0.

To delete all messages
Wait until playback of allmessages has finished and themessage counter begins tocount down from 8 to 0.
During this time, press theDelete button. Your BTResponse 75 announces “Allmessages deleted”.
By pressing the Stop buttonduring the 8 second countdownyour messages will be saved.

You can let your BT Response 75answer an incoming call and hear the caller’svoice through the loudspeaker so youcan decide whether or not to take thecall in person.
Make sure that the volume is set to anaudible level and that the VIP feature is off.
Allow the incoming call to be answeredby your BT Response 75 as normal. Youwill hear the caller begin to leave amessage.
If you want to talk to the caller in person,pick up your handset and speak. YourBT Response 75 will automatically stoprecording and reset to answer new calls.

To switch VIP on and off
VIP is pre-set to OFF.
Press and hold the VIP button,while still holding the VIPbutton, press the Answeron/off button. VIP will switchon.
Repeat the procedure to switchVIP off.
Your BT Response 75 has a VIP featurewhich sets your answering machine toanswer calls silently (do not disturb)but allows designated VIP callers toalert you with a beep tone that they aretrying to contact you. The VIP featurewill only operate when the answeringmachine is set to ‘Answer On mode’.

By pressing the Stop buttonduring the 8 second countdownat the end of all message play,the messages selected fordeletion will be saved.

To switch the feature on/off
Press the 1471 button.
Your BT Response 75 willannounce “1471 on/off” asappropriate.
The 1471 feature is pre-set to on. Aftereach incoming message your BTResponse 75 is set to dial the free 1471service and record the announcementthat gives you the telephone number ofyour caller whether they leave amessage or not. On playing backmessages you will be given the caller’snumber and time of the call.
The display will show ‘d’ when diallingthe 1471 service. The 1471 feature canbe switched off.

To change the VIP code
Press and hold the VIP button.
Keep holding VIP and press theSkip� button to move forwardthrough numbers, or press � Skip to move backward.
The VIP code numbers rangefrom 00 to 59.
When you reach your desiredcode number, release the VIPbutton. Your BT Response 75will announce the new VIPcode.
To stop the VIP alert beeps
KEYPAD Press the # button. YourBT Response 75 will announce“Please leave your message afterthe tone”. Your caller can thenleave you a message.
To allow VIP callers to alert you
Give your VIP callers the VIPcode. Your pre-set code is 40.
KEYPAD Tell them to key in the codewhen they hear your outgoingmessage. VIP alert lasts for 30seconds.
If callers wish to cancel theKEYPAD alert, they press the # button
on their phone. The unit willgive a long beep at the end ofthe OGM, the caller can thenleave a message after the beep.

Pressing the Stop button willcancel any procedure currentlyin progress.
After pressing the Stop buttonyour BT Response 75 willreturn to ‘Answer On’ mode.

The free 1471 service announces theday and time that the call was left.Your BT Response 75 willautomatically record thisannouncement immediately afterreceiving a call. Consequently the day of the call will be recorded as‘today’. Therefore it is recommendedthat you check your messages on a dailybasis. The free 1471 announcementalso asks if you wish to return the call.In fact you are not able to do this.

To keep your messages private, yourBT Response 75 requires you to enter a 2-digit security code before you canplay back your messages.
For your security code, look at the swingout label on the underside of the machine.(You cannot change the security code).

To operate your BT Response75 remotely
Dial your BT Response 75phone number.
When you hear your outgoingKEYPAD message, press the ✱ button.
You will hear 2 beeps.
The message counter on yourBT Response 75 will flash ‘A’.
KEYPAD Key in the first digit of yoursecurity code (within 8 seconds).You will hear a beep.
KEYPAD Key in the second digit of your security code. You will heara beep.
If you enter the incorrect code,your BT Response 75 willannounce “Security code error.
Please enter again”. If youenter the wrong code again,your BT Response 75 willannounce “Security code error.Thank you for calling” and thenend the call.
Once you have entered thecorrect security code, you canoperate your BT Response 75remotely.
If you have no messages, yourBT Response 75 will announce“You have no messages” and waitfor 8 seconds for you to enteranother remote instruction.
If you have new messages,your BT Response 75 willannounce “You have ‘x’message(s)”, and then playthem back to you. See ‘Menufor remote access’, page 19 formore remote functions.
To turn your BT Response 75 on
This is useful if you forgot toturn on your answering machinebefore going out.
Ring your BT Response 75. Itwill answer the call after 20rings. When you hang-up, theanswering machine will beswitched on and will answer calls.

To stop/cancel a command
During message playback:
KEYPAD Press the 0 button. YourBT Response 75 will give2 beeps.
To replay all messages
When you hear “End ofmessages”, within 8 seconds,
KEYPAD press 2 on your keypad.
To skip backwards to theprevious message
During message playback:
KEYPAD Press the 4 button twice to skipback to the previous message,or three times to move back 2messages, etc.
To skip forwards to the nextmessage
During message playback:
KEYPAD Press the 6 button.
You can move forward twomessages by pressing the 6button twice, move forward 3messages by pressing it 3 times,and so on.
Please note
If the memory is full, you will have todelete some messages before your BTResponse 75 will switch to ‘answer on’mode.
After you hear the ‘memory full’announcement, you have 8 seconds toenter your security code. You can thendelete messages, see ‘To delete messages’,page 19.

When you hear “End ofmessages” or “You have nomessages”, within 8 seconds,
KEYPAD press 8 on your keypad.
Your BT Response 75 answering machine will switch off and announce “Answer off”.
KEYPAD Press the 8 button again within8 seconds, to switch back onagain. Your BT Response 75 will announce “Answer On”.
To switch between AnswerRecord and Answer Only mode
When you hear “End ofmessages”. Within 8 seconds,
KEYPAD press 3 your BT Response 75 will announce “Answer Only on” or “Answer Only off”.
KEYPAD Press 3 again to change thesetting.
To check your outgoingmessage
When you hear “End ofmessages” or “You have nomessages”, within 8 seconds,
KEYPAD press 9 on the keypad.
Your BT Response 75 will playback your message.
To change your outgoingmessage
When you hear “End ofmessages” or “You have nomessages”, within 8 seconds,
KEYPAD press 7 twice.
Your BT Response 75 will beep to let you know it is startingto record.
When you have finishedrecording your new outgoingmessage, press and hold the
KEYPAD 0 button for 1 second.
Your BT Response 75 will beepand play back your message.

During message playback:
KEYPAD Press the 2 button. You willhear a beep every 10 seconds.
KEYPAD Press 2 again to resumeplayback.
If you pause for longer than 60 seconds, the line will bedisconnected.

Call counter does not light up
Check that your BT Response 75 iscorrectly connected to the mains andthat the power cable is insertedcorrectly into the back of your BTResponse 75.
If you have inserted the back-up batterybefore connecting to the mains poweryou will need to reset your BTResponse 75.
No dialling tone
Check your line cord is correctlyconnected to the socket and your BTResponse 75.
BT Response 75 display is flashingcontinuously
This indicates an error. Press anybutton on your answering machine.Flashing should stop and the answeringmachine should reset to its settings onfirst ‘power up’. Unplug the line cordand power cord. Wait 5 minutes andthen replug.
Press the Answer on/off button on youranswering machine. Flashing shouldstop and BT Response 75 should resetto settings on first ‘power up’.
BT Response 75’s battery lowndicator is on
The back-up battery is either low inpower, missing or incorrectly installed.Open the battery compartment. Ifbattery is correctly in place, try replacingit with a new 9V alkaline battery. Whenoperating at normal power the batterylight remains off.
Incoming message does not record
Make sure your BT Response 75 is setto answer-on mode and that thememory is not full. When the memoryis full, the display will flash F.
You cannot hear messages or incoming calls
Your BT Response 75’s volume may beset too low. Adjust the volume bypressing + on the volume control.
You experience a power cut
If a working battery is installed insideyour BT Response 75, its settings andmessages should be saved until powerresumes. It will not be able to recordany new messages, however.

You cannot access remotely
Make sure that the telephone you areusing to access your BT Response 75has a TouchToneTM keypad.
When entering your code, make sureyou allow enough time, at least 2 seconds,between digits for your BT Response 75to recognise each one.
VIP function does not respond
Make sure that VIP is switched on. See ‘To switch VIP on or off ’, page 15.
To reset
If you encounter a problem and yourBT Response 75 will not respond to anybutton presses, remove the batterythen turn off the power for 10 seconds.Turning the power back on will resetyour BT Response 75 to ‘Answer-On’mode.
Ensure that your BT Response 75 isconnected to the mains power beforeyou insert the back-up battery.
All messages will be lost when resettingyour BT Response 75.
Buzzing noise on answer machine
Your answering machine is too close toa radio, TV, computer, cordless ormobile telephone, causing interference.Move it another metre away.
Clicking from answer machine
In some instances, when the 1471feature is switched on, you may heara series of quiet clicks. This is normaloperation.
No OGM
You may have accidentally pressed theOGM button for too long whenchecking your outgoing message, andrecorded a short silent outgoingmessage. Re-record your outgoingmessage, which will allow you to deleteit if you wish, or re-instate the pre-recorded outgoing message.

Your BT Response 75 is guaranteed fora period of 12 months from the date ofpurchase.
Subject to the terms listed below theguarantee will provide for the repair of,or at BT’s or its agent’s discretion theoption to replace the BT Response 75,or any component thereof, (other thanbatteries), which is identified as faultyor below standard, or as a result ofinferior workmanship or materials. Products over 28 days old from the dateof purchase may be replaced with arefurbished or repaired product.
The conditions of this guarantee are:• The guarantee shall only apply to
defects that occur within the 12 monthguarantee period.
• Proof of purchase is provided.• The equipment is returned to BT or
its agent as instructed.• This guarantee does not cover any
faults or defects caused by accidents,misuse, fair wear and tear, neglect,tampering with the equipment, or anyattempt at adjustment or repair otherthan through approved agents.
• This guarantee does not affect yourstatutory rights.
Pack the unit securely, preferably in theoriginal packaging. All parts must bereturned including the mains poweradaptor. We cannot take responsibilityfor goods damaged in transit.

1471 feature will not work on aswitchboard.
The BT Response 75 is intended to beconnected to analogue networks andprivate switching systems in the UnitedKingdom.
It may also be connected to switchingsystems that use tone (MF) or pulse(LD) signalling, with earth or timedbreak recall. If in doubt, your switchsupplier or maintainer should be able tooffer help. Advice on connection to BTswitching systems can be obtained bydialling BT Freefone 0800 800 152.
If you do not have a compatibleswitchboard, it cannot be guaranteedthat your BT Response 75 will operatecorrectly under all possible conditionsof connection.
Generally your BT Response 75 can beconnected to any switchboard where asimple modern telephone can be usedto make and receive calls. It cannot beused to answer calls on PBXs configuredfor dial 8 night service unless a suitableadaptor is purchased (not availablefrom BT).

Switchboard compatibility
How many telephones can you have?
All items of telephone equipment havea Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items which may be connected toany one telephone line. Your BTResponse 75 Plus has a REN of 1. Atotal REN of 4 is allowed, if the totalREN of 4 is exceeded, the telephonesmay not ring. With different telephonetypes there is no guarantee of ringing,even when the REN is less than 4.

This equipment complies with theessential requirements of the RadioEquipment and TelecommunicationsTerminal Equipment Directive,1999/5/E.

If the battery warning light was not litbefore the power was lost, all informationshould be retained for at least one hour(up to 6 hours for a fresh alkalinebattery).
If the light was on, data may be lost evenif a back-up battery was installed.
If no battery was installed, all informationwill be lost and the BT Response 75 willpower up as new when power is restored.
