Dear Friends,

This year we celebrate the 30th Anniversary since Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation was founded. We continue to help individuals and families change their lives for the better and move out of homelessness and into their own homes. The most important lesson we have learned in the thirty years since Mercy Housing and Shelter was founded is that homelessness can be eradicated if intensive case management is combined with services and decent, safe, affordable housing.

Nutritious meals, a warm shower, clothing, mental health, addiction, and medical services for an underserved population, are just a few of the many basic human needs Mercy provides or can connect individuals to.

Today we help individuals and families not only secure housing, but learn new skills, attend college, and learn how to manage their assets. Our case managers provide encouragement to set realistic, attainable goals which build the confidence the streets have taken away. Confidence plays an important role in the ability to gain employment, maintain a reliable income, and move on to independence. We provide tools and teach life skills that give them hope for the life they have longed for.

We have helped more than 5,640 men, women, and children from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, many of whom now have a home to call their own. Their stories inspire us, and are a testament to the effectiveness of our programs and remarkable staff, even in the midst of one of the worst recessions our country has seen in generations.

This past fiscal year was one of the most challenging financially Mercy has ever seen. The continued slow growth of the economy, the federal sequestration, and reductions in state funding will continue to have an effect on us this year. We do everything we can to continue to provide the same level of services. Your support is critical in making this happen – we can’t do it without you.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our dedicated Board of Trustees, Staff, Funders, Volunteers, and Partner Agencies, all of whom make this important work possible. With your contributions, you are investing in the future of people’s lives and together we can make homelessness history!

In grateful appreciation,

Sister Patricia McKeon Bradley Venne Executive Director Chairman Board of Trustees

Gone But Not Forgotten at ChristmasWhen Joseph Stuart, Jr. passed away at the age of nineteen in a car accident, his father grieved as any parent who lost a child would. Shortly after his son passed, Joseph Sr., decided he needed to do something to ease the pain he was in. “I knew I had to turn my grief into something good,” said Joseph Sr. He continued to mourn the loss of his son and found ways to honor his memory. He reached out the high school his son graduated from and started a scholarship in his son’s name. “I wanted to celebrate my son’s life and have others benefit from it,” he said.

One day, Joseph Sr. was speaking to a neighbor who told him about Mercy Housing and Shelter providing assistance to a resident in the building he lived in. He contacted Mercy’s Supportive Housing Services and spoke with a manager about how he could help someone in need. It was near Christmas, and he wanted to do something to help “bring Christmas” to someone who didn’t have much. His son, Joseph Jr., always loved Christmas and he wanted to bring this joy to others.

That was a few years ago. Since then, Joseph Sr. continues to contact our Supportive Housing Services Manager each year and they meet at a department store and go Christmas shopping for a family. They shop with a list of items the family needs and the children’s lists of items they hope for. Over the years he has purchased toys, sheets, blankets, pajamas, dishes and many other housewares the family has needed.

“I wish I could see the expression on their faces Christmas morning when they are opening their gifts”, says Joseph Sr. “I wonder if they have the same look of joy my son did as a child”.

“For It Is In Giving That We Receive”Christmas at Mercy is always an amazing time of year when the generosity of many people is evident. Our annual holiday gatherings for families include refreshments, wrapped gifts and sometimes even Santa! A few years ago we overheard a young child asking their parent, “if they give me all of these presents, what do you give me?”

From that point on we changed our approach because we realized having our clients feel confident and successful as a parent was just as important to them, as it was for their children to get presents from their parents. Now, when the generous donations of holiday gifts are delivered, we provide our parents with gifts, wrapping paper and tape—so that they can wrap the presents and give them to their children on Christmas.

Our “Elves” are made up of faith groups, organizations, businesses, and individuals who work with us to fulfill the holiday wishes of clients and their children. We provide them with a list of individuals or a family, their ages and some suggestions or requests of items they may want. The generosity of our “Elves” over the years continues to inspire us.

Consider creating a Christmas giving tree in the lobby of your organization or business. Write the name of the item on a gift tag or paper wreath cutout and hang on your tree for all to select.

Our Clients Are Always In Need Of:• Socks • Bus Passes

• Adult Underwear • Laundry Detergent

• Soap & Shampoo • New Twin Sheets

• Toothpaste & Toothbrushes • New Pillows

• Deodorant • New Blankets

• Razors & Shaving Cream • New Bath Towels

• Pocket-sized Daily Planners • Hats and Gloves

If you, your church, business or organization is interested in sponsoring an individual or family to fulfill their holiday wishes, or for more information on how to help Mercy, please contact our office at (860) 808-2055.

Highlights of 2012-2013Since its founding in 1983, Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation has helped more than 150,000 individuals and families find housing, provided support services, taught life skills and job skills in order to obtain employment and successfully maintain their home. Some of the highlights of this past year include:

Completed a $3 million dollar exterior renovation to St. Elizabeth HouseThe historic landmark known as the Henry Barnard House, is home to our Transitional Living Program and the Friendship Center, our day shelter and meals program. The renovation of the exterior included adding an elevator, fire stairwell with a handicap ramp, and new windows.

Launched a redesigned, expanded websiteOur new website provides information for individuals and families in need of housing and services, as well as members of the community interested in supporting Mercy’s work to end homelessness.

Developed a new three year strategic planOur board and community partners worked together to create a strategic plan. Goals for the strategic plan include: converting an existing transitional living program over to permanent supportive housing with services; developing and sustaining new and existing community partnerships; and increasing awareness of our mission through innovative development strategies.

Director of Program receives prestigious awardDave Martineau, Director of Program at Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation was given the Rev. Richard Schuster Supportive Housing Advocacy Award in recognition of his years of advocating for those in Connecticut who experience homelessness. The award was presented by the Partnership for Strong Communities.

Helping Hands Community Thrift Store & Furniture BankMercy has partnered with Helping Hands, a nonprofit organization that resells donated furniture and housewares. Mercy will refer calls about donating furniture and housewares to Helping Hands. We then receive a portion of the proceeds of each donated item that is sold in their store. Case Managers can also provide clients with a voucher to select up to four furniture items for a small fee.

Healthy Initiative Program (H.I.P.) at St. Elizabeth HouseThe condition of an individual’s well being is critical to their recovery and success. Healthy eating habits and exercise play an important role in this. During the past year, residents at St. Elizabeth’s House have been enjoying new healthier meals as well as learning proper nutrition and exercise techniques.

A New Home“Don’t be comfortable with what you are or what you have – strive for more”

This is one of the many inspirational sayings you hear from Lisa when you ask her about the challenges she has overcome.

Ten years ago Lisa was traveling from Middletown to Hartford taking eight different buses to attend cosmetology school. Her commute took three hours a day. After a while, the commute was too much and she moved in with her friend’s family in Hartford.

Still going to school and working, Lisa was unable to afford an apartment until a friend told her about Mercy Housing and Shelter. The agency was able to find Lisa an apartment with assistance. She worked with her case manager from Mercy for seven years until she was established enough to be able to afford her own apartment. “Mercy was a great help to me, but you have to work hard. If you put in 100%, Mercy will too.” With the encouragement of her case manager, Lisa would set goals every couple of months. In the beginning her goals were to finish school, save money for a crib, and purchase a car.

Lisa has been working as a teacher at a cosmetology school for more than five years. She is married and has a young son and she continues to set goals. Recently she accomplished one life changing goal: “We purchased our first home in January. My top three goals now are to create a business plan in hopes of opening my own salon, paying off my car, and planting flowers around my new house.”

Supportive Housing ServicesLisa received assistance through our Supportive Housing Services. Through this program individuals, including those who are “chronically homeless” find stability in a home of their own, while being provided case management services. The combination of permanent, affordable housing and supportive services works well for people who face the most complex challenges. Very low incomes, serious and persistent conditions including substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, mental illness or co-occurring disabilities make it difficult for them to be successful in maintaining a home. Last year: supportive housing services served and maintained 96 households, who had been homeless and provided case management support and life skills workshops.

When I Lost It AllWhen you first meet “Steve” you get a quick sense of who he is: a tall, confident man grateful for the help he has received from people over the last several years. The more you speak with him you realize he is in pain, perhaps physically from his medical problems related to diabetes, but you can see in his eyes the pain he carries with him. “My wife passed away eight years ago from cancer, and I fell into a depression.” After his wife’s death, Steve began drinking heavily to escape his grief, eventually becoming a weekend binger who “crawled into a bottle to escape”, as he says. During this time Steve continued working as a dispatcher in a local 911 call center, a position he held for more than ten years. (He is proud to tell you he has only had two jobs in seventeen years.)

After years of drinking and not managing his diabetes, he found himself hospitalized with a staph infection. This hospitalization was one of many more to come. He used all of his sick time, short and long term disability, eventually losing his job due to his many hospitalizations.

He was living on unemployment and his 401K. He was struggling to pay $675 for Cobra healthcare, $300 a month for his diabetes medication, his car payment, car insurance and gas, leaving barely enough to pay rent.

A few years ago, Steve was hired as a laboratory technician and was able to find a room to rent in a private home. With his rent, medical costs, and the cost of his car he was not able to afford much else, so he began eating breakfast in the Friendship Center at St. Elizabeth House. For more than a year, Steve would stop for breakfast each day on his way to work. During one of these breakfasts Steve began talking to our Homeless Outreach Case Manager, and it was suggested that he add his name to a list of individuals who were in need of housing. Steve chokes up when he tells you about the day he received the phone call saying Mercy had a room for him at St. Elizabeth House. “I had a place and a key all to myself, St. Elizabeth House allowed me to keep all that I had left, safe and secure.”

Steve is the first to acknowledge that “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and being homeless is a “process that evolves”, including losing all of your belongings when you can’t afford to pay the storage facility fees. “You can’t imagine what it is like to lose everything; I carry that with me each day”.

While staying in our Transitional Living Program at St. Elizabeth House, Steve continued to work, and attend mental health programs which helped him cope with his grief and alcohol addiction. After ten months, he was able to move out to fulfill a lifelong dream of moving to Maine. He has a long term goal of one day owning his own home. “The problem of homelessness is getting worse if a guy like me, can go homeless while on unemployment and using my life savings – and I still couldn’t afford a place to live.”

St. Elizabeth House and the Friendship CenterSteve received assistance through his daily visits to the Friendship Center for breakfast. Working with a case manager he was able to move into our Transitional Living Program at St. Elizabeth House.

In our Transitional Living Program, individuals work closely with case managers and set and meet goals that will return them to self-sufficiency and independence. In addition to providing housing and intensive case management, services include meals, job preparation and job placement, and permanent housing search.

Last year: Mercy served 66,538 meals to 5,132 individuals in the Friendship Center, and provided transitional living with support services to 156 homeless individuals.
