Students are taking responsibility collecting their Expectation Cards that reflect our school expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Aspire. Once a student has collected 4 Expectation Cards they take them to the Award Centre outside the Primary DP Office (Years 3-6) or to myself (Years K-2). If I am not in the office, students either place them in the red tin that I take to assembly each week or on my chair.

An Expectation Certificate is then presented at respective Primary or K-2 assemblies. As K-2 assemblies take place each Friday, students need to deliver their 4 expectation cards to my office by Thursday afternoon.

Year 2 Excursion Year 2 walked to Manly on Monday to complement their History unit, ‘Past and Present’. This morning I had the privilege of discussing the tour with 2M and 2B and was very impressed with their collective knowledge and interest in historical Manly. Thank you to Mr Oliver Messent for

organising the excursion and sharing his wealth of knowledge. Thank you also to the many parents who assisted on the day.

Medical Reminder

If your child has a medical diagnosis that requires an Individual Health Plan and an Emergency Care/Response Plan such as anaphylaxis or asthma, it is

parent responsibility to provide both the plans and medication to school before the respective expiry dates. Our office staff spend countless

unnecessary hours chasing medical forms. Please assist our office staff by taking note of these expiry dates and replacing both medication and Emergency Care/Response Plans before the respective expiry dates. All Medical forms are available on the website under the ‘School Notes’ tab.

It uses literature as a starting point for discussions and follow-up activities. If you would like to attend the workshop,

please email the school with Bounce Back Parent Workshop in the subject line. Please indicate your name, child’s name and their class in the body of the email.

ICAS Mathematics Competition Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 Congratulations to all of the students who sat the ICAS Mathematics competition. Students who forgot or were unaware of the change of date were given the opportunity to sit the exam later in the day.

Reminder: What is bullying? How can you help your child if they are being bullied or are bullying others?

Most children occasionally get teased or annoyed by other children at school. Responding to this is one of the common challenges that children have to face at school. Being bullied is more serious. Bullying is when one child (or a group) repeatedly and deliberately uses negative words and/or hostile actions against one specific child that causes distress.

Bullying can be:

Physical (e.g. hitting, pushing or damaging personal property)

Verbal (e.g. insults or nasty name-calling)

Social (e.g. trying to socially isolate someone by spreading lies or rumours about them or

stopping them from joining in)

Cyberbullying: this means using technology (such as email, mobile phones or social

networking sites) to bully someone verbally or socially or to frighten or intimidate them. It isn’t called bullying if any of these things happen only once, if children have a mutual argument or fight, or if a child chooses not to spend time with another child.

This is especially important for those in Year 3 to achieve 4 years in a row for their GOLD certificate and for Year 6 to achieve 7 years in a row for their

PLATINUM certificate. You’ve already done the reading in class and for homework, so now just get your Reading Record into Mrs. Burke or I in the library for all your prizes & reading glory! Just over 2 weeks to go…!

Just in time for Book Week, the terrific Suzanne Cairns has reupholstered more chairs and benches to make our school library sparkle! Thank you so much for your persistence & hard work – the children love reading & sharing on the new, shiny furniture!

Tuesday, August 21st, 2018 – Fair dinkum author illustrator Michael Salmon will present to all classes in the hall throughout the day, have some of his books on sale & hold a book signing of those you buy for your home

library. Order forms are available in the office and library, but there will be a selection of titles available on the day. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to any session (10:20 am, 12:10 pm or 2:15 pm).

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018 – As part of the Education Open Day celebrations, there will be a selection of brand new library books for a small donation of $5, $10 or $15. Your child’s name will be put on a special donation sticker for all to see when the book gets borrowed, so every reader will see which generous student has given a fantastic book of stories, facts or fantasy to Manly West Library! The student who donates the book gets to borrow it first and leave a lasting legacy in the library for many years to come! Hope to see you at the

COLA by the hall. Books will be on display to donate from 8:50 am until 11:20 am. After visiting your child/ren’s classrooms, come by to donate the gift of reading and wonder. Hope to see you then!

Kitchen Garden

In the Kitchen Garden this week...

At Manly West we're continuing the War on Waste. Tune in to watch the latest episode on iView. It's highly recommended family viewing.

Year 4 in the Garden—Bees Wax Wraps

In an effort to reduce the use of single-use plastic like clingfilm in the environment, Year 4 are learning how to make beeswax wraps. They will each be making a wrap in class over the next couple of weeks and will be able to bring it home for use in their lunchboxes etc.

Garden Library

5M have finished the installation of the seating and decoration of the area around the Garden Library. Come and have a look, it's under the tree next to the chook run. The Garden Library will be open at lunchtimes for quiet reading. The motto is "Read a Book, Return the Book". The books are not available to be borrowed, they are for reading in the garden only. Books Needed - following on from this we are looking for donations of garden-related fiction or non-fiction picture-type books. For example, books on insects, flowers, plants, growing things, bush tucker, native plants,

native animals etc. If you have something you think is suitable, please cover it with contact and drop it off to me at garden shed on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Native Bee Hotels I'm working with 5F this week to start planning the construction of our new B & B Hotels for native bees and insects. Insects are really important in the garden as pollinators and pest killers so by providing their 'bed'' in the hotel and their 'breakfast' in the garden they will hopefully make the garden their home.

Science Week It's Science Week this week. Check out https://www.scienceweek.net.au/ on events happening around Sydney.

Small-space edible gardening course Aimed at beginners who would like to know how to start growing their own food. The course covers basic

composting and worm farming. It's at Manly West Kitchen Garden, on Sept 9th. Bookings are essential. All details are on the website http://www.permaculturenorthernbeaches.org.au/events/

Compost turning and watering help
