Stage 4 Science

Last week, students learnt about the difference between an animal and a plant cell.

Students used lollies to represent the cell membrane, nucleus and cytoplasm. Students

learnt that a plant cell has a cell wall, vacuole and chloroplasts which an animal cell does

not. Students were able to provide an explana on of each organelle (see collage).

Students have received an examina on no fica on. Their examina on will be taking place

School News Student Leaders' Excursion to Parliament

Last Wednesday, our school captains, Alyssa Denyer and Tejai Threadgate, a ended the

NSW Schools Leaders Program in Sydney. This involved visi ng NSW Parliament House and

listening to Members of Parliament from various par es speak and give some excellent

advice about life and leadership. Mark Latham, newly elected for One Na on, reminded

students to never give up, not to be afraid of being in the minority, and to have fun in their

role. All poli cians stressed the camaraderie between members of parliament, regardless

of which poli cal party they belong to, and the member for Hollsworthy noted that there

was a "what happens on the field stays on the field" approach to the riot of ques on me.

The member for Coogee stressed the rela onship between leadership and community

service, the member for Bankstown reminded students that good leaders look out for

others, especially with the rise in mental health issues in young people, and Steph Cooke

spoke very strongly about the importance of young leaders in the bush and she argued

that "value" should not be based on popula on or the bush would always lose. There were

many other very helpful pieces of advice which would make this newsle er piece too long!

A erwards, students walked to Government House to meet the new Governor, Her

Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC, who also had some great anecdotes

and advice. She spoke to our captains in a small group and seemed very interested in

visi ng our area some me in the new year, with her ADC showing great enthusiasm for

the Temora Air Shows. Her Excellency stressed that when we see problems, it's always best

to approach them with possible solu ons instead of merely complaining.

Overall, our students were a credit to our school and enjoyed interac ng with other young

leaders from the many city and country schools represented.

PSSA District Netball

The girls have been extremely busy with two days out in the first two weeks of Term 2.

Week 1 saw the girls a end the Western Riverina Netball Trials and play together for the

first me. It was quite amazing watching the girls bond and begin to work together as a

team so quickly. We saw some very talented netball on the court which our girls matched

with skill, knowledge and teamwork. Sixty‐seven girls all over Western Riverina a ended

these trials and we had four of our ten members make the Possibles and Probables ‐ an

incredible achievement. Congratula ons and good luck to Sophie Male from Barellan

Central School and Georgia McCormack from Ariah Park Central on your selec on to a end

the next round of trials later in May.

School's Cup Carnival was held in Week 2 and the girls played against a variety of teams

from Wagga schools. The girls played six games of quality netball throughout the day,

winning five out of the six. They had to adapt their normal games at mes, coming up

against much taller opponents and boys in a number of the teams. They did this extremely

well and have now made it on to the next level of the tournament in August.

Over the two days full of netball the girls represented themselves, their schools and our

district with pride. They were a fun bunch to spend me with and a pleasure to coach.

Netball Round 3 Jets v’s Griffith White

Under 11’s– No game

Under 13’s

It was an extremely close game by under 13’s today against Griffith White. All the girls played

very well making all the Mums very proud for the Mother’s Day match. The sun was shining

and so were the girls with Olivia Mills star ng strong in defence with plenty of nice intercepts.

Elsie Furphy also showed great defensive work holding the Whites out as much as possible

and with some great shoo ng by Jo Bray and Georgia McCormack we had a nice half me

lead of 5 goals. With a quick shuffle from both teams at half me Griffith made good headway

in the third and with best efforts from Tully Gaynor and Sophie Dart to hold them out in the

final quarter, Griffith snuck up on us and took the win 19 to 18. A very compe ve match the

girls should be proud of. Award winners today were “Players Player” (Beckom Hotel $5

canteen award) went to Elsie Furphy. Best on court Ariah Park Bowling Club $10 award went

to Olivia Mills.

Under 15’s*Under 15’s had two games today

Game 1 15's went down to Griffith White 38‐9; they were just too tall and didn't seem to

miss goal opportuni es! There were lots of posi ves to take away, however. The girls held

their leads, con nually found good space and kept White's from scoring as many goals in the

second half. The $10 Ariah Park Bowling Club award went to Paige Brown, for her

dependability and shoo ng accuracy. The $5 Beckom Hotel Canteen Award went to Sarah

Speirs, for her asser ve and improved defence.

Game 2 was against Griffith Silver, the girls were again determined and gracious in defeat,

going down 43‐17. The score didn't reflect the quality of the game, and it was fantas c to see

the U15's demonstra ng a new degree of pa ence and composure under pressure, especially

through the centre court. The girls, especially Kate O'Dwyer, were courageous in the face of

some very lively defence from Griffith and pa ent in working the ball around the a acking

half. The $10 Ariah Park Bowling Club award went to Brooke Denyer, for her solid defence in

the goal circle. The $5 Beckom Hotel Canteen Award went to Maddy Cassidy, for her excellent

court coverage and a acking play.

Round 2 Football Report v Griffith Red at Ariah Park

Under 11’s

Another solid win for our youngest team. Some great performances from several players

ensured the boys built on their win from the previous week. Be er players to claim the

awards were Joe Furphy who won the Elders Towel, Angus Pursehouse received the socks and

Henry Pren ce won the $10. Other be er players on the day were Cooper Herden, Seb Rees

and Charlie Heath. Final score was Jets 7.15.57 defeated Griffith Red 4.3.27.

Under 13’s

Great win by the boys in an entertaining game. Max Collis was great all day on the wing with

his pace and ran to set up many a acking plays. Noah Harper and Coby Bourke were

dominant in the middle and Darcy Gaynor improved as the game went on to be a prominent

player. Ash Smith, Alex Rees and Alister Brown were all good contributors with Alex winning

the socks and Alister taking home the Landmark Towel. Max Collis claimed the $10. Campbell

Palmer showed great promise in his first game for the club. Well done! Final score was Jets

6.9.45 defea ng Griffith Red 2.3.15.

Under 15’s

Despite not ge ng a win on the board, the Under 15’s showed their skills in defence in what

can only be described as a hard day at the office. Be er players on the day were Nate Doyle,

Blake Smith, Nathan Hodgson (who all claimed the Towel, $10 and sock awards), Joel Golding,

Talon Crouch, Taylor Heath and Ben Dennis. Final score was Jets 0.1.1 defeated by Griffith

Red 12.15.87.

Football Round 3 – Jets v Griffith White at Griffith Under 11’s What a thrilling end to the game! Down by 13 points heading into the last quarter the boys turned their team into a goal kicking machine to kick a massive 4 goals and 2 behinds to win the game 7.3.45 to Griffith White’s 5.7.37. Be er players for the Jets were Charlie Heath (Ardlethan Pharmacy Socks), Riley Foster ($10 award), Seb Rees, Angus Pursehouse, Joe Furphy and Cooper Herden. Under 13’s A very good game by the Under 13’s. To win against Griffith White is never easy, but Harry Roscarel was brilliant all day at both ends of the paddock to win the socks. Jimmy O’Hare played his best game to earn him the Ariah Park Hardware $10. Liam Duncan, Darcy Gaynor and Max Collis were all solid contributors. Brock Strickland is improving with every game and did some great tackles down back. Joe Quade, Alister Brown and Angus Pursehouse kicked great goals which was also pleasing to see. Well done! Jets 10.13.73 defeated Griffith White 2.0.12. Be er players on the day were Noah Harper, Liam Duncan, Darcy Gaynor and Max Collis. Under 15’s We were beaten by a bigger and stronger team on the day but the boys never dropped their heads and kept doing all day. Their tackling and pressure was there for the whole game. In the second half they matched it with Griffith. Nate Doyle played a great game along the half back line to win the Jason Bryce Spreading $10. Wilson Gaynor played his best game for the year in the back pocket to win the Ardlethan/Ariah Park Supermarket socks. Talon Crouch, Blake Smith an Taylor Heath all played well in the centre and Charlie McCormack was good wherever he played, and was the sole goal kicker on the day. Jets 1.6.12 were defeated by Griffith White 12.25.97.
