Activities9 June - 9 July 2013 - Art Exhibition: Irony in ParadiseA group Contemporary Art Exhibition by Sanggar Dewata Indonesia. The

Exhibition is the celebration of 17th years of the ARMA Museum and will

be opened by senior Indonesian art lover Dr. Oei Hong Djien. Date

Opening: 6.30pm, 9th JUNE – 9th JULY 2013. Museum Open everyday, 9

am to 6 pm. Location: Agung Rai Museum of Art, Ubud, Bali

Ambengan or alang-alang or known as bladygrass (imperata cylindrica), in

Balinese beliefs is used as a means to cleanse the soul of the negative aura

and to clean the environment are considered leteh or in condition that not

pure or not in a holy condition. The Balinese binding some bladygrass with

tridatu string which contain of red, white and black as the symbol of God

Brahma, Visnu and Siwa. They binding the grass to splashing the holy water

or known as tirta after praying at the temple.

Base on the Hindu mythology; when universe are created, God cooperate

with Asura or giants to turning the Mandara Giri Mountain to get the Tirta

Amerta; which is the Immortal holy water that found in the middle of the

earth. After Tirta Amerta successfully taken in the bowels of the earth, the

Gods and Asuras even fought each other to win the holy water. When they

fought, a lot of water spilled into the ocean and to bladygrass area which

this is the reason for the ritual bathing heirloom and tradition of Melasti or

Mekiis at the sea. Tirta splashed by bladygrass believed can cleanse bad

soul in human’s body and also to purify the nature.
