Base Design Certificate• Documents the performance indicators for a given product FAMILY (e.g. Samson’s Amsteel-X)• Performance Indicators should be used to compare all aspects of product performance to make a more holistic comparison• Testing based on specific methods in Appendix B, based on largest and smallest sizes promoted as mooring lines (or tails)• Should be endorsed by a 3rd party organization (e.g. IACS member)

Introduction
Lankhorst Ropes is a worldwide leading and
operating manufacturer of synthetic mooring ropes.
We are more than 200 years in the business and our
philosophy is to reduce your cost of owner ship
without jeopardizing safety.
Looking to safety in depth we are very much in favor
of the recently issued OCIMF MEG 4
recommendations.
In this short presentation your attention is asked to
the importance of proper testing and the value of
proper certification. The examples in the next slides
will make you aware of what we see happening in the
market. Making a well-considered decision can only
be done if all the facts are known and the contents
of certificates are understood.

Mooring Line Base Design certificate
MEG 4 has specified the test procedures
of how to get certain performance
indicators. This to make it possible for
each operator to make good comparison
of the products being offered and at the
same time to select those products
having the best performance indicators
which are needed for your particular
operation.
All the tests needs to be witnessed and
certified by an independent class society
and the test results are listed in a so
called “mooring line base design
certificate”.
The most important indicators are
zoomed in on the next sheets.

Mooring Line Base Design certificate
The LDBF value indicates the break load
of the rope when spliced. It is in direct
relation to the ship design MBF. There is
only a 5% margin avoiding that a too
strong rope will be used.

Mooring Line Base Design certificate
Angled Break Force gives an indication
about the strength loss when a rope is
bended. This will be the case when the
ropes are running over chocks, rollers and
winches. The higher this percentage is the
better.

Another important indicator is the Angled
endurance test. It gives you an insight
about the strength loss and long time
performance when bended. Again the
higher the percentage the better. In this
test OCIMF has determined to cycle the
rope for 17.000 times and to pull it than to
destruction.

Vessels are sailing worldwide facing
different climate conditions. In number 4 we
see the impact on the efficiency when ropes
are used in different temperatures.

Number 5 informs us what will happen to a
rope when it is cycled for 10.000 times at
normal working load level. Again the higher
this number the less impact the axial
compression phenomenon has on the
rope.

Average Immediate Strain can be seen as
the elastic elongation. It is an important
property to select the right rope with the
specific mooring conditions.

Last but not least, the stamp / signature
from an independent class society. The
stamp / signature confirms that the test
procedures have been done in line with the
OCIMF MEG4 recommendations.

So far so good, but things are getting
confusing if third party bodies are
confirming that items comply with
OCIMF MEG4 recommendations on
their front page, however, on the
second page of that same certificate,
reservations are made.

In this example it was decided to reduce the
endurance tests. Next to eroding the safety
aspect, it will also make it impossible to
compare the performance indicators, and
therefore, the products with each other.
Our advice to the operators / vetting would
be to make sure you will receive and study
all the pages of a certificate and not only
base your decision on the first page.
For third party certifying bodies it could be
an idea to state on the first page a clear
remark, creating more transparency.

Another thing we see happening
which creates confusion is that
certificates are issued as per
OCIMF MEG 4 recommended
layout, except without having any
clear content.
Needless to say that to get all
these tests done, a lot of costs,
effort and time needs to be
invested. OCIMF allows time to
implement the new MEG 4
recommendations.

Statement pending type approval
To be sure that the vendor is indeed busy
with a test program for the required
items, a possible solution could be, to ask
your vendor for a statement of the
particular class society, confirming the
test program.

9.1 Are certificates available for all mooring lines and wires?
Product certificates for mooring lines, connecting shackles, and synthetic tails should be kept in a file
clearly showing to which winch each particular component has been fitted. For ship’s following
guidance in MEG4, mooring line and tail certificates should follow the guidance for the purchasing and
testing of mooring lines and tails as provided in Appendix B of the Mooring Equipment Guidelines
(MEG4)
Notes: The OCIMF publications ‘Effective Mooring’, ‘Mooring Equipment Guidelines, Anchoring Systems and Procedures’ and provide information on all aspects of mooring
equipment and operations.
Common causes of accidents are an inadequate understanding of good mooring practices, un attended mooring lines, a lack of mooring line and/or tail retirement criteria, unbalanced
mooring arrangements, poor quality of mooring lines, poor maintenance of mooring equipment, insufficient knowledge of local conditions, a lack of attention to weather and tidal
conditions and passing traffic.
The Mooring Equipment Guidelines has been fully reviewed and update for the fourth edition (MEG4). This new edition of the guidelines contains enhanced guidance for the purchasing,
condition monitoring, and retirement of mooring lines and tails; enhanced guidance on documentation of mooring equipment; a new chapter on the Human Factors in Mooring Design; a
new chapter on Jetty Design and Fittings; a new chapter on Ship Shore Interface; and a new chapter on alternative technologies. MEG4 introduces new unified strength terminology that
provides clarity and aligns the language used by the cordage and the tanker industries.
This guidance notes to the questions in this chapter are based on MEG4.
Mooring equipment documentation and management:
Chapter 9. Mooring
If not already, Vetting inspectors are getting more and more informed about the deviations of some of them. It is not without reason that the
first question in chapter 9 of the Vessel Inspection Questionnaire 7 is about the availability of proper certificates. This remark is mentioned
on purpose, and intends to emphasize the importance of having the right and validated certificates on board, avoiding any vetting remarks
and to maximize safety.

The Rope Characteristics are tabulated on the next pages observing the following:
Fibre ropes are to be delivered with a linear mass within ±5% of the nominal linear mass given in the tables.
The reference number corresponds to the approximate diameter, in millimetres.
The linear density, in kilotex, corresponds to the net mass per length of rope, expressed in grams per metre or in kilograms per thousand metres.
The breaking forces quoted in the below tables relate to unspliced ropes (MBF) and spliced ropes (LDBF), and are as provided in the LEP Rope Supply Specification No. 242018R3 and Product Data Sheets as shown on the rope characteristics table for each rope type.

Wet cargo shipping companies operate in highly competitive global markets for transportation of non-edible and dangerous liquids, as well as edible non-dangerous liquids. Under increasing cost pressure, wet cargo carriers must operate as effi ciently as possible. Optimising mooring and towing operations is an important factor in achieving effi cient loading and unloading – reducing unnecessary and costly delays and additional port charges.
Lankhorst Ropes offers a one-stop shop for a broad range of fi bre and steel wire ropes for hoisting, luffi ng, mooring and towing for wet cargo vessels from Aframax oil tankers (75,000 - 115,000 DWT) through Suezmax (160,000 DWT) and VLCC (150,000 and 320,000) and up to T-1 supertankers (550,000 DWT). They offer outstanding service life performance and, as a result, low total cost of ownership.
Ease of handling, and rope safety are the trademark of Lankhorst Ropes. Manufactured in the EU using the latest in-house yarn extrusion and rope production techniques, the rope construction is optimised to suit the application and prevailing mooring conditions. All Lankhorst ropes are manufactured from premium materials, tested to OCIMF Meg 3/4 recommendations, and offer full rope traceability. Moreover, we work closely with our suppliers such as DSM Dyneema, to ensure the highest quality standards from raw materials, through manufacture, delivery and installation of the fi nished rope.

Rope selection criteriaBased on the holistic analyses, Lankhorst will recommend a rope to meet the desired properties for:

Lankhorst Ropes is committed to equipping crew with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure safe use of fibre ropes and maximum service life. Specifically, we provide:
- Training on rope handling- Splicing instructions- Installation on new (shipyard) or existing (ports) vessels- Hardware inspection including all on-vessel equipment.
Regular inspection is important in ensuring maximum rope service life. In addition to the crew training on rope handling and inspection, Lankhorst Ropes will make periodic visits to the vessel in port to undertake:
- Hardware condition inspection- Rope inspection- Update crew training- Provide inspection reports.
Visual inspection The rope-sample is visually inspected. Photos are taken for the final residual strength test report before pulling the sample to destruction.
Test reportEach sample will get its own test certificate as illustrated.
Lankhorst Ropes will provide a continuous residual strength testing program in order to assist in determining the best moment to change the rope end-to-end in order to ensure the best economical life time and to optimise safety on board. We believe this should be based on mooring hours, i.e. the number of hours a line has been used in mooring the vessel. This can be quantified by vessel and reported back to the manufacturer. Other factors which should be taken into consideration during the review are the environmental conditions at the ports and terminals, where the vessel will be moored.

The rope testing and recycling programmes can be combined. Ropes which are returned for testing and deemed unusable, can be used for recycling into other polymer products. On the image you see an offshore vessel with KLP® Deck Covers made by Lankhorst Engineered Products.
Proof of participation in the recycling programme is shown by a logo on the Work Certifi cate.
The recycling programme is an exclusive programme. It is not meant for ad hoc single rope returning for recycling as an alternative to disposal by our customers. The intention is that the whole fl eet’s ropes will be recycled in time.

ROPE TRACEABILITYRecord keeping is essential for the safe use of mooring and towing ropes. Lankhorst high performance ropes carry a unique Product Identifi cation Code (PIC). This PIC code is printed on a tape inside the rope and on the protective barrier in the eye. It corresponds with the factory certifi cate number for each rope, providing an effective way of managing rope use and maintenance.
24/7 ONLINE ACCESS TO ROPE CERTIFICATESLankhorst Ropes offer 24/7 online access to fi bre rope and steel wire rope certifi cates, regardless of the time zone. It provides as standard a manufacturer’s certifi cate for each individual mooring line, connecting shackle and tail. Furthermore, Lankhorst Ropes has a DNV GL type approval for the manufacture of synthetic ropes used for mooring and towing. Check the synthetic rope selection pages to fi nd out for which product a DNV GL L497 ‘Certifi cate of Test and Examination of Fibre Ropes’ is issued.
Certifi cates may be mislaid during fi ling or transportation but can be required immediately to trace and identify ropes. CONFIGURATION OPTIONS MOORING LINES
Mooring tails can be confi gured in either single leg or grommet arrangements. Generally, single leg mooring tails confi gurations have a lower modulus for the same break force and are recommended wherever possible. However, in some operations the smaller rope diameter afforded by a grommet offers advantages in handling or the selection and connection of joining and termination hardware.
In circumstances where practical constrains (for example, the need for a smaller rope diameter) necessitate a grommet confi guration, a stiffness value of two times the single leg stiffness (for the rope diameter required to achieve the strength requirements) should be used.

12 strand braided rope, made of DYNEEMA® yarns. LANKO®FORCE is an excellent alternative for heavy and lumbersome steel wire ropes in situations requiring manual handling of the rope. It is stronger than conventional steel wire rope, yet the corresponding weight is 7 times lower. The improved handling characteristics are especially suitable for towing and mooring applications. Another important benefi t of LANKO®FORCE is that the rope is fl oating. Moreover, when replacing fi bre rope, the reduction in rope diameter can lead to substantial savings in the weight and size of the mooring winches, for example, when incorporated in the design of a new build vessel the cost saving is substantial. Available in 12 x 1 construction (up to 86mm) and 12 x 3 construction (from 88mm). In a 12 x 3 construction each strand is a 3 strand rope.

STRONGLINETM
STRONGLINETM has a rope construction comprising a parallel core with a braided protective cover. The parallel core produces a far higher strength rope than might be expected for a rope of this diameter and material. The protective cover ensures a long service life due to its excellent resistance against abrasion. Regular maintenance can signifi cantly lengthen the rope service life. The main applications of STRONGLINETM are towing and mooring. A major advantage of using STRONGLINETM
for mooring your product or crude carrier is that there is no requirement for mooring tails. This means a major cost and hassle reduction over the life of the vessel. No need for tail replacement every 18 months.
When STRONGLINETM is installed on a towing winch, twists in the rope during installation can reduce the service life of the rope once put to work. To prevent twisting, it is crucial to use a turning table for unwinding from a coil. To facilitate the installation and avoiding induced twisting, a longitudinal marking has been added to the STRONGLINETM during manufacture. Please make sure the longitudinal marking line is always on the same position while winding up the STRONGLINETM on your towing winch.

It is standard on our jacketed ropes.

EUROFLEX®MOORING TAIL
Mooring tails absorb shock/energy within the mooring system. The EUROFLEX® MOORING TAILS surpass nylon tails in quality, as a result the energy absorption is greater, and the rope remains elastic for longer. Moreover, the rope does not lose a large portion of its dry MBF when wet. As the EUROFLEX®
MOORING TAILS’ strength is higher than that of nylon, a smaller diameter of rope can be used, providing better handling. Made of polyester and polyolefi n composite yarns, the standard length is 11 m (Effective Working Length). For those circumstances where more stretch is required, the EUROFLEX® MOORING TAILS are also available in 22 m EWL. Both versions are fi tted with two protected and spliced eyes of 2 m and 1m respectively.
OCIMF MEG4 guidelines recommend mooring tails with a TDBF of 125 - 130% related to the ship design MBF. EUROFLEX®
MOORING TAILS have equal breaking strength under wet and dry conditions.

TIPTO®LON MOORING TAIL (NYLON)
The standard nylon mooring rope for all purposes. Produced according the latest EN and ISO standards. It combines high (dry) strength and excellent abrasion resistance. Its high elasticity makes the rope very suitable as a mooring tail. In some occasions loading and discharge jetties and ship’s berth are located in area’s which are exposed to swell / surge or other severe conditions. It could be worthwhile considering to use longer tails which are made out of nylon.
Our TIPTO®LON mooring tails are made out of nylon and have a high stretch characteristics. By using these type of tails the dynamic peak loads in the main mooring lines can be reduced signifi cantly with a minimum of increase in ship excursion at the same time. Reductions in peak loads will increase safety and the life time of your main mooring lines. A tail is 22 meter.

TIPTO®TWELVETIPTO®TWELVE, available in 16 mm to 48 mm diameter, is the successor of the well-known TIPTO®EIGHT. The construction is different, yet the material remains the same. The 12 strand braided construction makes the rope rounder, more stable, more compact and with a smoother surface. This increases abrasion resistance and, as a result, the service life of the rope. TIPTO®TWELVE can be used for mooring, using either bollards and/or winches. All TIPTO®TWELVE coils are supplied with a quality label, stating “Original product of Lankhorst Ropes”. TIPTO®TWELVE ropes in the range from 32 mm up to 48 mm diameter have been upgraded with an extra marker yarn. The rope size can now easily (and above all) without mistake be identifi ed.

The rope’s small diameter and low weight make handling easier on board. DEFENDER®
A high performance protection sleeve for permanent fi xing on a hawser, towing line or pennant. The braided strands offer high abrasion resistance. The sleeve is made in a hollow braid, and can be easily be adjusted to the circumferential size of the rope being protected. The DEFENDER® can be made from different types of yarns, offering extra strength, fl oatability and other characteristics. Please consult our sales staff for the optimal product in your application.
TIPTO®WEBTIPTO®WEB sleeves are fi nished with a protective seam all around. Two large Velcro strips enable the sleeves to be applied easily and to accommodate different diameters of hawsers, two eyelets, one on either side, enable the crew to secure the sleeve in the right position on the hawser. The standard length is 3 meter.
