Completed in 2000, this new 5,500 sq ft residence

creates a serene and comfortable, contemporary

living environment with a distinct Balinese character.

A combination of three pavilions forms the main

structure of the house. Bridges link all spaces on

the first floor and full height glazing on both sides of

the walkway makes it possible for greater interaction

between indoors and outdoors.

A fusion of timber, marble, limestone and

pebblewash finishes, creates a natural palette of

materials that are utilised throughout the whole interior.

The project also provides a secluded swimming pool

with its own pavilion and landscaping.

The building was extensively re-planned from its

original layout to create generous ground level

living spaces with voids above and a large

first floor landing which acts as a bridge linking the

master bedroom and family rooms. A new upper

floor is created within the attic space, providing

a private roof terrace overlooking the valley. A

contemporary identity utilising bold colours, raw

silk wall panels and predominantly hardwood timber

floors is used.

This four-storey residence sits on a 45-degree

sloping site with the lower most level approximately

10 metres below street level. Redevelopment

included the introduction of a linear swimming pool

and the addition of a new level within the existing

lower level structure of the house. Extensive re-

planning created new opportunities for internal

voids and inter-related spaces within the basic

infrastructure of the original property.

Predominantly natural materials were used; volcanic

lava stone, paliman limestone for floors with coconut

wood at upper levels. External door openings utilises

sliding and folding timber screens allowing spaces

to be inter-linked and creating opportunity for a

seamless transition between internal living spaces

and external balcony areas.

In the development of this Taman Bukit Seputeh

residence, the primary objective to increase usable space

led to the obvious solution of utilizing the ground floor

area; originally dedicated only to cars.

In the ‘reshuffling’ of the interior, a void was created

on the first floor that gives a tremendous sense of

space to the house. The vertical nature of the house

is further enhanced by the exposure of the staircases

which has ensured the penetration of light from the

skylight at root level.

An oblique axis which begins on the ground floor is

part of a composition which continues on the next level

to identify the interventions that have taken place.

Natural materials, such as timber, terracotta and slate

are introduced, with marble on the first floor.

The original plan of this penthouse was

compartmentalised making the apartment feel some

what claustrophobic.

Substantial demolition, the increasing of the size of

the void, and additional glazed doors to the balcony

have produced a sense of spaciousness which the

original lacked and in doing so the existing structure

has been enhanced rather than concealed.

Bold forms feature prominently in the architecture

of the spaces and colours and finishes have been

chosen to promote a coolness – predominantly white

and off-white, with blues and greens and natural

shades in timber, granite and slate.

Silverton Condominium on Penang island, enjoys extensive sea views. Whilst its original 4,000 sqft penthouse interior offered a spacious living area dominated by the view, the other areas in the apartment were typically compartmentalised. The dictates of feng shui and the owner’s passion for Versace furnishings offered some guidelines in re-design. A curved wall is installed to contain the dining and living areas.

The curve of the wall on plan appears again in section across the ceiling of the main living space as it dives dramatically at an angle into the floor. Polished granite paves the main living areas and columns, beams are stripped of their render to exposed concrete to further contrast with the smooth white curved wall and ceiling installations.
