Until 1800, wallpaper was plain with festoon borders at cornice level and around doors. Later, it bore floral, striped, geometric or neoclassical motifs. Chinese papers with birds, flowers and landscapes were considered high style, as were French-imported scenic

This is a close up example of a Mantle but the same type of design could be found in the frieze. The frieze and cornice feature wooden carvings or plaster stucco work—including arches, fluting, reeding, garlands, interlace and dentil patterns. Greek Revival influences, such as egg-and-dart and anthemion, are also prevalent.(Realtor.com) Simple plaster garlands and swags draped in curvilinear arcs could also be found in ceilings, doorways, and mantels.

Molding and Cornices Moldings and cornices were added to almost every room; they add attractive curves, scale and proportion to any room.

Ornamentation

Ceilings were decorated with medallions or plaster. Like flat walls and ceilings, ornamental plaster is made of gypsum and lime which are stable and durable materials. An extremely versatile material, plaster can be modeled, cast, incised, colored, stamped, or stenciled.

Shape

Entrances of Federal style architecture were very elaborate and the shape was often round. This led to domed shaped and curved ceilings. The molding of plasters would allow the ceiling curves to follow the shapes of the room. As for square or rectangular rooms the ceiling shape stayed true to the room shape.

NICOLEFloors are often white or yellow pine. Better homes have tongue-and-groove and, occasionally, parquet. Boards are painted, sometimes a solid color, or in diamond patterns. Stenciling is also popular. Federal Period started seeing same width (12”) planks in the more formal rooms and the upstairs still had random wider planks.

Knotted English-made carpets bear scrollwork patterns, polygonal shapes, floral designs and Turkish, Persian and neoclassical motifs. Some are specifically woven to match ceilings, especially in well-to-do homes decorated by Robert Adam.The English Wilton Company of Portland, Maine. Dan says, “Perhaps the greatest misconception about Federal interiors is that they where furnished with room-sized oriental rugs laid on polished hardwood floors; a persisting conceit that dates to the Colonial Revival of the late 19th century. In truth wall-to-wall Brussels, Wilton and Ingrain carpets were fitted, and these were boldly colored and ornately patterned. Woven in classical and foliate design elements, these luxurious floor coverings were the foundation for the surprisingly fanciful interiors of the period. Hot oranges and reds were juxtaposed with bright blues and stoney-grey architectural designs appeared on yellow grounds with multi-colored floral sprays.”(Hackett, Web)

Hardware: The local blacksmith still produced the majority of hardware during the Federal Era, although the practice of machining pieces was increasing. While casting was still infrequently used, brass hardware was growing in popularity. Typical hardware motifs include the rope, bead, acanthus leaf, and Grecian wreath, classic Urn and Festoon design. Hardware common to this era includes the Norfolk latch, cast butt hinge, and decorative sash lift. Innovations include the latch backplate, the first mass-produced building screws, and hardware for the newest architectural fashion: built-in closets.

Federal window are larger panes of glass separated by narrow mullions. The Georgian style was normally smaller panes of glass with wide mullions. Important to note as this style preceded federal style and was found in the same areas. Can use more color choices as seen in the right now. Double-hung sash windows arranged symmetrically vertically and horizontally around a centered doorway. Colors then were limited, the most popular being yellow, ochre, or white. Outbuildings and even the non-public side of more important buildings often were painted red, the most economical paint color for the period.(Buffalo, Web.)

Large windows with double-hung sashes, panes separated by thin wooden supports muntins, Usually a number of small panes of glass because it was difficult to make large pieces of glass. There might be 12, 8, or 6 panes in both the top and bottom window sashes, e.g, 12-over-12 or 9-over-6. On Adam or Federal style houses, there is often a more spectacular in the center of the second story—often a Palladian window.

TRIAD COLOR SCHEMEThe light blue colors are cool colors that envoke a feeling of tranquility and peace. Red is a color that is an emotionally intense color. This would be used as an accent to compliment the blue and green colors. Green is a color of nature and symbolizes growth, harmony, and freshness. (Color, Web) Oval room blue is a trending color for 2017 along with olive green.(Pickard, Web) These colors (or shades of them) would also have been seen in homes designed federal style.

SPLIT COMPLIMENTARYThis color scheme takes the blue as its main color and orange yellow and orange red, which are the colors on each side of blues compliment, which is orange. Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquility. This shade of yellow is associated with caution and the orange red color is energy and happiness. There is a balance here of cool and warm colors with the grey being neutral. The red and blue colors were found frequently in Federal style interiors.

ANALOGOUS COLOR SCHEME

This scheme is using basic federal colors of blue and red. The brown and greys are neutral colors. The blue again is a cool color that in a dark shade represents knowledge, power, and integrity. The darker red is associated with vigor, willpower, leadership, and courage. (Color, Web). These are also colors that represent the city of boston in general. The photo is a picture of the bay in the winter.

The triad color scheme: These colors are all based on balance and creating an environment that feels good.

Split complimentary color scheme: Changed the color of the yellow so it is more energizing. The red is also a deeper red to compliment the yellow and blue and still keep with federal style color schemes. Introducing the yellow and light blue bring in a modern touch.

JUSTIFICATIONS

The color scheme in the bedroom uses hues of blue green and red. These go along with the federal style color scheme and also offer comfort and warmth. The furniture pieces compliment by using wood texture and simple lines that also create a space that is open but also stays with the federal style in a more modern way. The same type of ideas are used in the common area. The colors and textures are used together to create and environment that is welcoming and feels like home, while staying within the overall federal design and budget.

JUSTIFICATIONSTHE FIXTURES, PAINT COLORS, FLOORING, WALL TREATMENTS AND PAINT WERE ALL SELECTED KEEPING SEVERAL THINGS IN MIND. THE FIXTURES ALL REPRESENT DESIGN ELEMENTS THAT WOULD BE FOUND IN A FEDERAL STYLE HOME WHILE ADDING A MODERN TOUCH TO THEM. THE WOOD FLOORING WITH WIDE PLANKS ALSO IS A STYLE FOUND IN FEDERAL HOMES. THE WAINSCOT PANELS ARE SIMPLE AND GEOMETRIC WHILE ADDING A TOUCH OF ELEGANCE TO THE HOME. THE COLORS CHOSE WHILE REPRESENTING FEDERAL STYLE COLORS, ALSO CREATE DIFFERENT MOODS IN THE DIFFERENT AREAS. THE GREEN IN THE COMMON AREA ENVOKES WARMTH, GROWTH, HARMONY, AND GIVES A STRONG SENSE OF SAFETY. THE BLUE IN THE BEDROOMS SYMBOLIZES TRUST,LOYALTY, CONFIDENCE, AND FAITH, TO CREATE A SPACE THAT IS CALM AND SOOTHING. THE CHOICES OF ALL OF THE ABOVE WORK TOGETHER TO RECREATE A FEDERAL DESIGN STYLE, WHILE MAKING THIS A PLACE WHERE THE OCCUPANTS CAN FEEL SAFE AND PUSH FOR GROWTH. THE ITEMS WERE ALSO CHOSEN KEEPING SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND. THE WOOD FLOORS CAN BE RESANDED AND STAINED IF THERE IS WEAR AND TEAR AS WELL AS THE COLUMNS AND WAINSCOTING. THE PAINT IS A MORE DURABLE TYPE SO IT CAN BE WASHED DOWN BECAUSE THERE WILL BE TRAFFIC IN THE COMMON AREAS AND APARTMENTS, BUT CAN ALSO BE REPAINTED AS WELL.

Maintaining your interior and exterior painted surfaces will keep them looking great from year to year, and it can also extend the life of your paint.

In time, your newly painted surfaces may require some maintenance. Cleaning is vital to preserving the overall beauty and extending the life of the paint. For best results, wait at least two weeks before washing. And always test your cleaning solution and technique in an inconspicuous area to ensure that it does not damage the paint film.

Interior

Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild, soapy water to a general-purpose household cleaner. Apply gentle pressure when wiping. Penetrating stains and marks may be removed by carefully using an abrasive cleaner and water or solution of household bleach diluted with water. Rinse with clean water.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE: CERAMIC TILE

Ceramic Tile - New Installations

Post -Grout Clean-Up:

Grout haze is a film that has been left behind on the surface of the tile as part of the final grouting process. Usually this is buffed off the surface after the grout has achieved its initial 12 to 24 hour cure. The removal of the haze is often difficult when buffing with a clean rag or floor machine. Cementitious grout haze can be successfully removed with "Sulfamic" acid, which is a mild acid that attacks and breaks down cement smears. There are several products on the market called grout haze removers, which usually contain Sulfamic acid. Sulfamic acid can also be purchased in powder form and mixed with water to different strengths by qualified professionals. Similarly, 100% Solids Epoxy Grout haze can be removed with an Epoxy Haze Remover. These removers are formulated to safely and quickly remove cured epoxy haze from new tile installations. Their unique formulation will soften most epoxy hazes for easy removal without damaging the grout or tile, usually in one application. Sulfamic acid or grout removers should never be used on Natural Stone products.

CARE AND MAINTENCE: TEXTURED PORCELAIN TILEA textured porcelain tile surface requires some additional cleaning procedures. Just a standard wet-mopping will not effectively clean such surface. It requires you to clean it more frequently and do it in a specified manner. For cleaning textured surfaces, follow these instructions:

Sweep or vacuum dust and debris from the floor. For sweeping, use a soft-bristle broom and sweep in two directions. First follow the direction of the tile, and then sweep diagonally to ensure complete cleaning of all foreign material that might be residing in the texture.

Saturate the surface with a neutral cleaning solution in hot water and stir. Allow the cleaning solution to remain on the floor for five to ten minutes. Scrub the floor with a brush, again using a two-direction method.

Rinse the porcelain tile floor with clean, clear water to remove the cleaning solution.

For high traffic locations, it is recommended to scrub the floor once a day and wet mop at regular intervals.

Prevention and Safety Measures:

To keep your porcelain tile floors in tip top shape, also follow these tips:

Do not clean porcelain tile flooring with ammonia or with cleaners that contain any bleach and/or acid for cleaning. Acid and ammonia based cleaners may alter grout color.

Do not use any oil-based detergents, wax cleaners, or sealants.

Do not use agents that contain any dyes or colors on unglazed porcelain tile.

Use rugs at outdoor entrances to prevent grit from being tracked onto the tile flooring.

Do not use steel wool pads, because the loose steel particles may cause rust stains in the grout.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE: CERAMIC TILE ROUTINE CAREContaminants and spills on a glazed ceramic tile are, generally, easier to clean than most other unglazed ceramic and porcelain surfaces. Glazed tile products should be cleaned routinely with an all-purpose, low VOC household or commercial cleaner. The product chosen should also be grout joint cleaning compatible. The type of product may vary depending on the tile application and use. A multipurpose spray cleaner, which removes soap scum, hard water deposits, and mildew designed for every day use, can be used on wall tile areas in residential baths and showers.

The entire area should be cleaned and scrubbed with cleaner solution through the use of a cotton mop, cloth, sponge, or non-metallic brush. The entire area should be rinsed with clean water to remove any cleaning solution residue. Remember that you should sweep or vacuum floor areas prior to cleaning to remove any dust or debris. Routine cleaners should never contain hazardous or polluting products including, but not limited to acids or ammonia. Acids can damage the grout and the glazed surface of the tile, and ammonia can discolor the grout.

Unglazed tile should be cleaned routinely with concentrated tile cleaners that have a neutral pH for safe regular use. These cleaners are better suited at removing grease, oils and normal spills from unglazed products. Again these products will vary depending on the application, amount of traffic and the use. The product chosen should also be compatible with cleaning the grout joints at the same time.

Removal of Sealers/Waxes/Floor Finishes:

If you need to remove a topical sealer or floor wax from a ceramic tile you should use a Tile Sealer & Adhesive remover. Always test a small area first. Apply a liberal amount of undiluted sealer & adhesive remover to a manageable area. Allow setting without drying until coating or residue softens. Reapply if necessary until sealer softens and can be removed. If necessary, agitate with white nylon scrub pad. Wipe up the residue with a cotton towel or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not use on natural stone products.

1. Water should be applied with a light touch, regardless of your finishing system, so thatit can evaporate without soaking into the wood. If excessive moisture is applied to yourwood floor and allowed to stand, the wood will absorb the water and swell. If the woodswells beyond the capacity of any expansion space, cupping can occur. Additionally,excess water can be detrimental to the adhesion of the finish.

2. Always test a new cleaning system in a small area before using it on an entire floor.Some finish systems can create a clouding effect. This clouding effect may beappreciated by some homeowners, but not all. It would be best to determine this inadvance.

3. If Carlisle Wide Plank Traditional Finish or Prefinish was chosen, we recommend theuse of LOBA Hardwood Floor Cleaner for everyday cleaning and LOBA Remover fortougher spots. 4. If any other finish system is used, contact the finish manufacturer directly for theappropriate cleaning schedule.

5. It may be appropriate to touch up small areas of your floor. There are a couple ofoptions, depending on the size of the mark:

A. Purchase a touch-up kit from Carlisle Wide Plank Floors for small marks. These kitsare color-based (light, medium and dark) and contain multiple stain pens and asmall amount of finish suitable for small scratches.

B. If the area is larger than a small scratch within the area of a few boards, tape offindividual boards and recoat them. This may involve the application of stain, if thefloor was originally stained, followed by the application of a coat of finish. The finishcan be purchased directly from Carlisle Wide Plank Floors.

FINAL JUSTIFICATIONSThe client asked for a design that would keep with the federal style of the home as well as a design that would work in a transitional housing complex. This was first done by utilizing the colors red, blue, and green that were typical in federal style homes. Different shades and hues of these were used to create different moods in different areas. The bedrooms have a shade of blue to create a safe and peaceful place to rest. The green shades throughout the common areas represents balance and growth. Adding splashes of red to give a feel of energy and ambition. The flooring is hardwood throughout which was also an element of federal style homes. This was also chosen for its upkeep and sustainability. Area rugs will be used to add color and style to the rooms. The walls will have wainscot panels with simple geometric shaped squares painted white. This adds a simple elegance to the rooms that was also found in federal style homes.

The apartments were designed to try to create as many as possible within the space. That means that the rooms are on the smaller side. The bedrooms have trundle beds to provide more sleeping spaces and also save space. Larger dressers give more storage space as there isn’t room for closets. The kitchens utilize peninsulas for the eating area in place of dining room tables, but the common area has two large tables for gathering together. The front area of the building is designed with an area for the women to access resources to find jobs, new homes, or whatever they need.

REFLECTINGThe one new thing that I learned in this class was how to effectively work on a project with a team that is far away from you. Figuring out how to manage the work load by giving duties to each other based on their strengths and weaknesses. This is very important as it helps with time management and helps to create a project that is best for the client. It was also a great experience to go over our projects with one another and get different solutions to the designs that we had. The cost estimating was another new concept this course. The overall project and how to put it together went into more depth and detail than the previous residential design course.

Overall just going through the project step by step helped to learn how to do it correctly and pay more attention to the little details of the project. Making sure that ADA clearances are met and where they need to met as well as what types of fixtures you need to use to meet ADA requirements. It was somewhat challenging because I was trying to come up with a solution to fit more people in the space at one time, so I had to make sure that there was room for everything.
