Instructions to Prepare for Testing The Residency In-service Training Examination (RITE) will begin online administration in 2019. The Online
Institution Preparation Guide is designed to help residency programs prepare in advance of exam
administration to ensure all systems are in place prior to the exam administration.
Below you will find a comprehensive view of the items your program will need to complete for computer-
based exam administration. Programs that adhere to this detailed list of action items and target dates will be
sufficiently prepared come test day!
ADVANCED PREPARATION Target Date
1. Reserve a room for exam administration days:
February 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 2019
NEW additional exam date available – Tuesday, February 12!
The room must be conducive to a proctored environment that is free from
distraction.
* Pro tip: Book the exam room with a chalk board or white board on which
to write the candidate’s access PIN Code. Alternatively, use a portable
flipchart or projector.
September 21, 2018
2. Connect with your institution’s technical support staff to identify your key
contacts to assist with the transition to computer-based exam
administration.
Your institution’s technical support staff will play a crucial role in the set-up
process to ensure all your systems are in place prior to exam administration
and will serve as your first point of contact in case of a technical error on
exam administration days.
The AAN may be able to assist with Surpass software support on exam
administration days; however, for other technical issues, such as issues with
Wi-Fi, or issues dealing with hardware, the AAN will not be able to answer
and will require input from your institution’s technical support staff.
* Pro tip: Connect with your colleagues in other specialties (internal
medicine, plastic surgery, etc.) to understand how they administer computer-
based exams.
September 28, 2018
3. Register for the RITE exam October–December 3, 2018.
Programs will receive personalized links to access the RITE registration
webpage.
October 2018
3
*Pro tip: To receive the member rate for RITE registration, neurology
program dues for the 2018-2019 year must be paid in advance of
registration.
4. Registration closes.
Ensure accuracy of your candidate information. Candidates must sit for the
exam date selected at the time of registration. Candidates will not have the
opportunity to change exam dates on-site or after the cancellation deadline.
The cancellation deadline is December 20, 2018. There will be no
exceptions.
December 3, 2018
5. Work with your technical support staff to set up computers for exam
administration.
✓ Review the system requirements for computers and make sure
computers can meet these requirements – See detailed system
requirements. (page 6)
▪ If your residents plan to use personal laptops and not
institution computers, we recommend that you set up a time
for your technical support staff to meet with residents to
have their laptops inspected to see if the computer meets
system requirements.
✓ Download SecureClient on computers - See detailed instructions on
how to download and install SecureClient. (page7)
▪ Administrator access will be required to install SecureClient
▪ Ensure anti-virus software can be turned off the day of the
exam, or that SecureClient is set as an exception.
▪ Computers will need to use Adobe Flash Player.
▪ Est. 15 minutes+ per computer to complete the install
process.
