Day 7: Hierapolis, Laodicea & ColossaeHierapolis, meaning "Sacred City," was anancient center for pagan cults until it wastransformed into a Christian center in the firstcentury. According to tradition, the ApostlePhilip lived and was martyred in Hierapolis. Itwas likely the hot springs of Hierapolis in con-trast to the cold mountain springs nearColossae that combined to bring application tothe "lukewarm" Laodiceans (Rev 3:14-22).This connection between the cities lies behindPaul’s reference to Hierapolis and Laodicea inhis epistle to the Colossians (Col 4:13).Laodicea contains many acres of ruins to visitincluding a stadium and remnants of a sophis-ticated water system. Nearby Colossae iswell-known throughout Christian circles as thereceiver of Paul's letter to the Colossians.Today, the town has fallen into obscurity andnothing remains.
