HUMANITARIAN HISTORY
Dr. Dr. Donna Sweet established the Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2005. The goal was to recognize people who made significant contributions within the Wichita community through their leadership, guidance, philanthropic, and selfless actions. The recipient of several prestigious awards, Dr. Sweet wanted to give recognition to others who do great things in our community. Our honorees, working quietly behind the scenes and/or front and center, have impacted individuals, corporations, and the Wichita community. DONNA SWEET, M.D. Dr. Sweet is internationally known for her pioneering work providing care and resources to those infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. She calls Wichita her home and travels regularly throughout the world educating physicians, seeing patients, and creating HIV/AIDS awareness. Her passion is caring for her patients. She shares her passion with An Evening of Note honoring the Humanitarian of the Year.
THE SWEET EMERGENCY FUND The Sweet Emergency Fund was established in the early 1990s to assist HIV/AIDS patients with their health care needs when other resources were not available. Thousands of patients have benefited from the generosity of those who have contributed to the Fund. Patients are living longer and fewer have the resources to cover their medical expenses, making the need for the Sweet Emergency Fund greater than ever before. The false impression that there is a cure for AIDS hinders fundraising efforts. Our needs far exceed our resources and your support is greatly appreciated. Donations are accepted throughout the year.

BIOGRAPH YIt all started in a record shop. In Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Judy is from Eau Claire. Phil’s from Fort Scott, Kansas, but was working a summer job in Eau Claire. He stopped in the record store to find it empty, aside from himself. No customers, no clerks. He decided to look around anyway. While perusing the vinyl, the door opened and in she walked with a lime sherbet cone. The missing clerk. Judy. She’d gone next door to the ice cream parlor because the store was dead. They started chatting. During the conversation, he found out she also worked at a grocery store. Curiously, the next day, he needed groceries. Going through her checkout line, they chatted again. And it went from there. At summer’s end, he came back to Kansas, but they kept in touch. He returned to Wisconsin the next summer for his job. Eventually, they got married, and the rest is history.
Lucky for Wichita. Phil started work as an attorney for Foulston Siefkin and Judy taught French at East High. Phil was with Foulston Siefkin until his retirement. But, retirement didn’t sit well with him. He spent another eight years working as an instrumental part of Exploration Place, five of them full-time. He then went on to do law work for Cargill for another five years. Judy taught school for three years before founding Communities in Schools, where she remained until her retirement. She’s still active with the organization, now known as The Pando Initiative.
But it hasn’t been all work and no play. The couple have traveled extensively around the world, with at least 70 trips to foreign countries along with numerous trips throughout the U.S. Additionally, they’ve given tirelessly back to the community, not only locally but at the state and national levels. A true Wichita power couple, they are humanitarians through and through.
