About the Collection:How to Research your Local Industrial Heritage

Are you interested in finding out more about your town’s local industry? Or do you want to know more about an industry your family worked in? Whether you are a local historian, a student of architecture or social history, or just interested from a personal point of view, use this online guide as a starting point for your investigation.

It will tell you what collections of original photographs and documents are held, and as the vast majority of these are unique and unpublished, they are only to be found in the English Heritage archive. Architectural plans, reports, and historic photographs and are just some of the resources available.

Choose an industry from the index and it will tell you which collection holds records related to this subject. Follow the link to the collection profile and a summary of its contents will help you decide if they are of interest to you.This profile also has advice on how to access the contents, which will be useful for your next step.

English Heritage Archive Collections The collections we look after are a national archive of the historic environment.They include over 12 million individual items: the majority are photographs, but there are also plans, drawings, research notes and files.The archives represent the results of a century of documentation and collecting – the work of the researchers of English Heritage and its predecessor organisations, but also of long lasting programmes of collecting and acquisition. Our archive collections are a treasure trove of material showing how the English landscape, cityscape and society were transformed by the Industrial Revolution.

What the guide does The size and variety of the collections mean that a guide like this cannot be comprehensive. It aims to indicate the richest areas for industrial history and show the best ways to search and access the collections. In particular it provides a route into the collections by industry, through the index which follows this introduction.

If you have already identified a specific industrial building or site you are interested in, you should also look at our online catalogue where you can search the records we hold by location or place name.

What the guide covers The guide concentrates on collections which document the period from 1750 to the present day:

• mining and quarrying • processing and manufacturing • power and utilities • transport and communication

The index in this guide provides a good summary of the industries and subjects represented.

Some of the collections are specifically focussed on an industrial site or topic, but we have also included other collections which touch on a wide range of subject matter if this includes particularly important or widespread coverage of industry. For example the HenryTaunt collection is the archive of a commercial photographer covering many aspects of life in the Thames Valley in the late 19th and early 20th century – but it also includes detailed documentation of the Witney blanket industry, as well as coverage of a whole range of industrial workshops and sites.

The collections include archives of images taken by a wide range of professional and amateur recorders, and for an equally wide range of reasons.They also contain reports, photographs and plans created by

English Heritage and its predecessors, which provide detailed information on particular industries and sites.

As well as collections which have been listed in detail, we have also included holdings which are not yet fully catalogued, but which can be consulted. Further details on the accessibility of collections and how to consult them are included.

Name of Collection

Description A short summary of the contents of the collection, highlighting any industrial themes which are particularly strong.

Overall content and industrial content These entries indicate the overall size of the collection, the kind of archive items it contains and how much of the content covers industrial subjects.



Dates (of archive creation) This indicates the approximate dates when the archive records were created, for example when photographs were taken or a report written. Please note that it doesn’t indicate the date of the subject of the record, which can of course be significantly older.

How to access the collection This section will tell you whether the collection has been catalogued, whether any of the images have been digitised, and how to access the archive items.

We have catalogued many of our collections and full listings can be found and searched on the English Heritage Archives website.Where we have digitised images from these collections you can also find and view these on this website.

Where we have not yet catalogued a collection in detail you can still see a summary entry on the website. Some collections may have a list available, others are organised by place, making it possible to search for coverage of specific sites.

Collections not in the guide There are two key areas which may contain additional material on particular sites that are not included in this guide:

• The open access “red box” collection.This historic collection is arranged by county and by parish, and includes photography taken or collected between the 1940s and the 1980s.

• Our aerial photographic collections, which include comprehensive coverage of England from the 1940s onwards.
