Research Time and Staff Proposals

The overall aim of the research strategy is to enhance students’ learning by staff being engaged in their own research practices and to bring research funding into the University. Within the context of Leeds Arts University (LAU) research is investigating; rediscovering or making a new contribution to knowledge in a chosen specialist field of study/practice that is open for scrutiny through peer review. Scholarly activity is defined as surveying existing developments in the researchers’ field, these developments may be practiced- based or technical as well as academic or theoretical; acquiring knowledge in order to keep up to date with developments in a specific area. Scholarship is similar to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) but more involved and focuses on a particular area of field of work, it may involve a number of different activities and goes beyond what is strictly necessary to do ‘the job’.

In the academic year 2016-17 the University allocated specific time for research to Higher Education (HE) academic staff on permanent contracts. The basis of the allocation was 15 days for full-time staff and a proportion of this for fractional posts e.g. 0.8 = 12 days; 0.6=9 days; 0.4=6 days; 0.2=3 days. This process was continued in 2013-14, where staff used the time in order to develop their research projects, or where appropriate start new research.

Clear guidelines were devised requiring the submission of a research proposal and the recording of research outcomes. Proposals were submitted for approval to the Senior Management Team (SMT). Research activity was monitored by the Head of Research electronic copies of the proposals provide a record of proposed activity and eligible members of staff are required to keep a record of their activities which are scrutinised at the end of the year by the Head of Research.

Collins, D. has been asked to do peer review work on Visual Thinking – Analysis, methodologies and principles for LUP / Lapland University Press.

Editorial work

Broadhead, S. (2017) Appointment to the Editorial Board, Journal of Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning.

7. Ethics Research proposals for the upcoming academic year 2017-2018 were reviewed by the Ethics Sub-Committee. Proposals where the ethical questions had not been considered were given conditional approval on addressing any outstanding ethical issues. It was noted by the sub-committee that there was a rise in ethical issues around those wishing to research mental health.

8. Gallery reportDuring the academic year 2016-17, Exhibitions have made a big step forward in terms of supporting staff research and REF outputs. 'The Radical Decade curated by Caroline Riches' and 'Ann O'Donnell: Modernist Jeweller' curated by Sam Broadhead and France Norton were two examples of how peer-review from the International Exhibitions Advisory Board can benefit to process of curating research in our main, public-facing gallery space. Both also served as examples of how to curate material from design-orientated disciplines within an academic context. Other highlights from Exhibitions this year included 'Felice House: Re/Western' curated by Sharon Bainbridge. ____________________________________________________________

Annual Research Report 2016/17_____________________________________________________________________________

This was an excellent example of how a research theme and political question can generate multiple research channels and ongoing collaborations. The aftermath of this show has so far included a peer-reviewed journal article and a photography exhibit in The Corridor space. The painting exhibition itself was highly impactful, with unprecedented press attention and feedback from senior cultural figures including Peter Heslip (Head of Arts Council England) and Sir Christopher Frayling (former RCA director).

9. Research Excellence Frame Work Strategy 2015-20All HE course teams were invited to a meeting with the Pro-Vice Chancellor (academic) and the Head of Research. Staff were informed that everyone would be submitted for Research Excellence 2020, where they could submit 1-6 outputs. The census period will fall between late 2014 and 2019.

10. Consortium for Research Excellence, Support and Training (CREST)

CREST’s researcher mobility fund was really useful in supporting presenters from the University of Plymouth to come and present their research. They also helped us publicise the event as well as the Radical Decade.

11. The Virtual Environment of Research More staff are beginning to engage with the repository. At the moment the work of five researchers from Leeds Arts University have been uploaded. But progress is slow, even the most experienced researchers struggle to meet all the RIOXX and REF criteria set by the repository. The amount of uploads are 25 over the previous five years.

for the duration of the exhibition, with a weekly pop up show for certain presentations. The participants were a mix of disciplines who responded to the call in a wide variety of ways:

Mat Clark (Animation) – Breakdown video reel demonstrating his motion capture and rendering pipeline for the main character he is developing for his final Masters Animation to be completed Late 2017.He has also produced a paper on History of Hair Simulation in 3D CGI animation, which he is submitting to Society of Animation Studies.

Joanne Craddock (Photography) – is investigating animated .GIFS, producing whimsical stop-motion animated loops exploring Dance. This informs some of her investigation into digital imagery on the internet.

Matthew Burton (Film Workshop) – is currently investigating 3D body scans and motion capture, to create impossible poses of characters in action. He will produce a short animation.

Duncan Mosley (Fine Art) – Current practice based research into use of Manipulated Digital Imagery in his painting process and reference of subject. He will be presenting one of his paintings from a current range of work.

Graham Tansley (Associate Researcher) – will present a bespoke pop up video projection piece for one night, on his current investigation into Transforming spaces with Building Projection. His research practice has recently had work presented at Light Night 2016, and Projections around Otley. He is currently developing a video projection project for a festival in Iceland.

Annabeth Robinson (Animation / Creative Practice) – will present a pop up show demonstrating her current investigation into VR/360 animation for Google Cardboard. This will include work that was presented at York as part of Vespertine Events OCT 2016, and Uncommons Event National Media museum & Delius Center in Dec 2016.

Pedagogy

The research pedagogy cluster exhibited on the 4th May 2017 showing work on the theme of research led teaching. The exhibition welcomed visual, aural, performative, textual art practices which addressed this in any form and from any standpoint. Research opens up knowing rather than shuts it down, and teaching happens in a multiplicity of ways.

The 3rd Art of Writing will take place on March 15th in conjunction with the Progression Manager Martell Baines under the Twilight Café banner. It will develop the successful model of providing resources, advice and responses to questions in an accessible format/location. This session- 3rd in the series- hopes to include input from a range of sources across University. The art of writing sessions are aimed at bringing interesting and innovative ways of ____________________________________________________________

writing about art into accessible spaces and are part of the cluster’s ongoing work on the pedagogy of art writing.

Crossing Borders

Fair Exchange 2, 07 April - 07 May 2017. Work from Leeds Arts University students and alumni presented at the Wall Gallery at the School of Art, Syracuse University, First-Floor Hallway, Shaffer Art Building, Main Campus, New York, USA.

Pink Slip was an exhibition of Stephen Gouldin’s and Andrew Havenhand’s work, at the The Studio Theatre Gallery, Leeds Arts University, November 2017.This exhibition continued the ongoing relationship between the University of Syracuse USA, and Leeds Arts University. As part of the Crossing Borders cluster involvement with the exhibitions’ programme it was a joint research cluster exhibition. Pink Slip introduced an exhibition that made connections between the current work of the Assistant Professor in Painting at Syracuse University, (Andrew Havenhand an Alumni of Leeds Arts University 1975-1976) and Steven Gouldin an artist based in Wakefield, (also an alumni of Leeds Arts University 2010-2013.)

Pink slip- Public engagement eventAn informal an in-conversation was held on Thursday 2 February which related to the Crossing Borders research cluster exhibition ‘Pink Slip’ held in The Studio Theatre Gallery. This provided the opportunity to consider not just the works in the exhibition but where the research points historically, socially and materially. Professor Steve Swindells (curator of Mining Couture, 2012, Huddersfield Art Gallery) considered the work.

Curatorial

The Radical Decade exhibition opened at Leeds College of Art which was a culmination of three years’ research. Caroline Riches is now working with Dr Kevin Almond on a journal paper from the initial research.

Re/Western opened on 19th January in the Blenheim Walk Gallery. An exhibition of work by Texas artist Felice House. This is to be accompanied with a range of events including an artist talk, film screening and contextual writing.

13. Progression manager’s research project Martell Baine’s Research Fellowship has led to a paper and presentation called ‘The dilemma of the increasing under-representation of male students in art and design education’. The aim and academic rationale of the research project was to examine the factors that are contributing to the decreasing of the number of male students in creative arts education. The objective was to design and deliver outreach activities informed by the research that effectively engage male students; particularly those students who could potentially progress into the creative industries.

The research method selected was to undertake a series of professional conversations within her role as a Progression Manager in a specialist art and design institution. The sphere of professional contacts consisted of peers, specialist and collaborative networks, support groups and policy makers. What emerged from the conversations focused on the current dilemma was that systemic changes to the compulsory education curriculum in art and design are adversely affecting the numbers of participants in studying creative subjects. Male pupils are being deterred, by a range of factors, in continuing their pre and post compulsory education in art or design. Barriers appear to commence at the early stages of a students’ pathway; their home environment, their curriculum, cultural experiences and their influencers support for creative development may also be a factor.

14. Research and postgraduate culture

The postgraduate students have engaged with the curatorial and pedagogy shows. Another student has been successful in gaining a place on a practice-based PhD in order to explore Victorian Death Culture. A previous MA student studying a practice-based PhD on the Lancaster Witches exhibited at the university and also did a PhD public tutorial with their supervisors, which was well-received. The students have presented their research externally; on the 27th May 2017 there was a public critique called Stranieri at the Artists’ House in Canale di Tenno, Italian Alps which how cased the student ‘s research. A second year student has had an abstract accepted at Manchester University conference in June 2017 . One second year student has had an abstract accepted at The International Conference on Educational, Cultural, and Disability Studies 2017 Liverpool Hope Uni July 2017. Another one of our second years has had their paper, 'The Aesthetic Limb: Prosthetics and Potential', accepted for 'Skeletons, Stories and Social Bodies.' An interdisciplinary conference hosted by the department of Archaeology and the Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences at The University of Southampton, 24th - 26th March 2017.
