About UNIDEMI UNIDEMI is a Research and Development unit in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Its mission is to contribute to the advancement of science and technology in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, helping to generate added-value in the European industry, and to promote in society the awareness of the role and importance of technological innovation, competitiveness and productivity. UNIDEMI activity is focused on the integration of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering scientific domains, namely in: - Product and Process Design and Development - Manufacturing Technology - Production Strategies and Operations Management UNIDEMI approach is oriented to integrate product and service life cycle phases, integrating engineering and management processes, namely: - Product and process development processes, from concept to
launch; - Fulfillment processes, including production and operations
management processes, from orders through all operational steps to delivery;
- Customer support processes, over the life cycle of products and services;
- Secondary processes, related to activities within an organization that may provide value to an internal customer operating a primary process.

For this purpose, UNIDEMI is organized in 3 main research groups: 1. Systems & Engineering Management - SEM Group - productivity,
quality and operations improvement from product and process design to the market in lean supply chain environments.
2. Manufacturing, Technology & Automation - MTA Group – advanced manufacturing processes focused in laser welding, friction stir processing, composites machining and non-destructive testing.
3. Fluids & Structures Engineering - FSE Group – facilities and structures design in maritime and aerospace environments, considering the fluid-structure interaction, and energy requirements.
UNIDEMI is hosted in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering occupying 6.200 square meters (1.920 square meters for laboratories) and integrates 87 researchers.

Allocation of mechanical tolerances (AMT)
What it is
AMT is a rational way to increment the capability of the production systems from the design phase. Determining appropriate tolerances for components is a challenging concurrent design task.

Defining strategies of assembly based on Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.

Axiomatic Design (AD)
What it is
The ultimate goal of axiomatic design is to establish a scientific basis for design and to improve design activities by providing the designer with a theoretical foundation based on logical and rational thought processes and tools.

theories and methodologies (e.g. TRIZ, DSM, QFD, DFSS, etc.).

What it is
NDT is the branch of engineering concerned with all methods of detection and evaluation of flaws in materials or differences in its characteristics, without destroying its ability to perform in service.
