Research BulletinISSUE 1 | VOLUME 1 | DECEMBER 2012

For the last several decades, government policy in the areas of productivity, innovation and competitiveness has focused largely on the production of scientific knowledge and talent leading to substantial levels of new investments in R&D and science and engineering education. Yet, when we look back at Canada’s innovation and productivity performance there has clearly been something missing.

There is a growing realization that where Canada has fallen short is in the production and use of business talent and knowledge. To be successful in meeting the challenges of an increasingly global competitive environment and in capitalizing on the Government’s investments in opening new international markets, Canadian companies will need to avail themselves of leading-edge research in areas ranging from international economics and finance to managing global supply chains, distribution systems, talent and brands. Similarly, policy makers will require a more sophisticated understanding of the operational and business strategies of Canadian companies and the new competitive challenges that they face.

SBE is well positioned to make important

contributions to both managers and policy makers through the output and activities of its research institutes. In addition, the School also has an increasingly active group of researchers many of whom are leaders in their respective disciplines and whose research focuses on some of the critical policy and managerial issues of the day.

Canada’s Technology Triangle is a great laboratory for economics and business

research. One of the most dynamic and industrial communities in the country, it provides both a great place to do leading-edge management research and a group of growing companies that can benefit significantly from the evidence and insights that it produces.
