● A nested block design is defined as two systems ofblocks such that the second system of blocks isnested within the first system of blocks. Thesedesigns are quite useful in many experimentalsituations. For example, consider a field experimentconducted using a block design and harvesting isdone block wise. Harvested samples are to beanalyzed for their contents either by differenttechnicians at same time or by a technician overdifferent periods of time. The variation due totechnicians or time periods may be controlled byanother blocking system. Technicians or timeperiods form a system of blocks that are nestedwithin blocks. Such experimental situations are alsocommon in post harvest value addit ion ofhorticultural and vegetable crops. To deal with suchsituations, Preece, D.A. (1967, Biometrika, 54, 479-486) introduced Nested Balanced Incomplete Block(NBIB) designs where block classification ignoringsub-blocks is a balanced incomplete block (BIB)design and sub-block classification ignoring blocksis also a BIB design. A complete catalogue of NBIBdesigns with number of replications r< 30 has beenprepared. The catalogue contains a total of 299designs. Out of 299 designs, 8 designs are non-existent. A new method of construction of NBIBdesigns has been obtained. Using this method andtrial and error solutions, block layouts of 22 newNBIB designs have been obtained. The layout of199 designs with block contents has beencompleted. The solution for the block layout forremaining 92 designs is unknown and thestatist icians need to develop methods ofconstruction of these NBIB designs. The designscatalogued have also been identif ied for1-resolvable and 2-resolvable sets.
