A19 CSR Practices among Indian and UK Retailers

ProjectTeam: Sourav Mukherji

Summary: Following an in-depth qualitative research methodology; this researchcomparedCorporateSocialResponsibility(CSR)practicesamongsixmajorretailers, threefromIndiaandthreefromtheUnitedKingdom;andtriedtoanalyseandexplain thedifferencesthatwereobserved.CSRpracticeswerefoundtobemorematureintheUKthanintheIndianretailindustry.UK firms tended to bemore open and sensitive towards CSR, appearedto be more proficient in their stakeholder relations, exhibited higherCSR transparencyand structuredCSRmore consistently. In contrast,CSRpractices by Indian retailers were in a formative stage, characterized bybeing unstructured, informal and sometimes, inconsistent. For example, noneofthestudiedIndianretailersreleasedCSRreportsandonlyoneoftheretailershaddedicatedpersonneltodriveCSRactivities.TheseobserveddifferencescouldbeexplainedbydevelopmentaldifferencesbetweentheUK and Indian retail industries. Our analysis revealed that UK retailersseemed to be more interested global issues, while the studied Indianretailers focused on local issues. Overall, in the UK there seemed to begreaterconsciousnessandmoreCSRactivitiespertainingtoenvironmentalsustainability (reductionofenergyconsumptionandwastemanagement)asopposedtoeconomicwellbeingofanydisadvantagedgroups, thoughallthecompaniesstudiedhad“supportforcommunities”asoneoftheseveralobjectives of their CSR initiatives. The CSR activities that we witnessedamong the Indian retailerswere focusedmoreon inclusivity rather thanonenvironmentalmanagement.Thissituationcanbeexplainedbythefactthatenvironmental regulation ismoreprevalent in theUK than in India. This confirms observation in extant literature which suggests that CSRprogrammestendedtobeheavilyinfluencedbysocio-economicprioritiesofdifferentcountries,whichtendtobeglobalissuesindevelopedcountriesandtheneedforhealthcare, infrastructureandeducation indevelopingcountries(BlowfieldandFrynas2005;Frynas2006).

Summary: We consider the two-level supply chainof Lee, So andTang (2000)witha singlemanufacturer supplying a single retailer. The retailer faces non-stationarydemandthat followsanARIMA(0,1,1)process,asopposed toanAR(1)processinLee,SoandTang.Withoutinformationsharinginthesupplychain,theretaileronlyconveyshisordertothemanufacturer.Withinformation sharing, the retailer at theendof theperiod, in addition toconveyinghisorderalsoconveyshisdemandlevelfortheperiod.Theuseofamodelofnon-stationarydemandbecomesimportant,givenempiricalwork that demand for a high percentage of SKUs at a supermarket canbe autocorrelated. This is because of the repeat purchase behaviour ofcustomers. We consider a periodic review system for both the retailer
