We’re going to spend the next 2 weeks on the story of Noah and the flood. We’re going to see how Noah was able to shine in a world full of sin. We’re going to learn how we too can stand strong no matter the state of our culture. I hope you’re ready to get a little wet!

Day One: Evil

Let’s start with a short reading today. Why don’t you focus in on Genesis 6:1-8. Exploring the Text

1. Verse 5 is the main verse of today’s reading. Write it out. 2. Explain what vs.5 means in your own words.

Genesis 6:5

The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and

that every intention of the thoughts of his

heart was only evil

continually.

3. What was God’s response to the evil of mankind in vs.6? 4. What did God decide to do when he saw how evil man was? 5. Who did God decide to spare and why?

Personal Application 6. What do you think it means to find favor

with God? 7. If you lived in Noah’s days, would God have

spared you? Explain. 8. What are some ways you can find favor with

God?

Day Two: Noah and The Flood

Yesterday we saw how sin had invaded the world one man at a time. Only Noah seemed to have favor with God. Today we will focus on Genesis 6:9-22. Read the passage. Exploring the Text 1. Describe Noah with as much detail as possible. 2. Who were Noah’s sons? 3. Look up a definition for these words: righteous, blameless.

Page 6: Rescued Genesis 6-7 Week Five: Saved from the Culture...God is a God of grace but He’s also a God of justice. How do you see that in Genesis 6-7? It took 120 years for Noah to build

Noah wasn’t sinless. He was

blameless. Someone sinless

doesn’t sin; someone

blameless knows what to do when

he sins.

4. What kind of corruption filled the earth?

5. What did God tell Noah to do in vs.13-16?

6. How much detail did God give Noah?

Page 7: Rescued Genesis 6-7 Week Five: Saved from the Culture...God is a God of grace but He’s also a God of justice. How do you see that in Genesis 6-7? It took 120 years for Noah to build

Personal Application 7. What do you think Noah was thinking when

God asked him to build the ark and fill it with animals?

8. What may have been some obstacles to his

obedience?

9. What’s the craziest thing God has ever asked

you to do? Describe your initial reaction.

Day Three: Noah’s Response

Can you imagine getting the instructions Noah got from God? Where do you begin building an ark for a storm you’ve never even seen, for rains you’ve never even smelled? How did Noah react to God’s command? That’s going to be the focus of today’s homework. Read Genesis 6:9-22 again today! Exploring the Text 1. In vs.18, God mentions a covenant. Look up the word covenant.

What does it mean? 2. What covenant did God make with Noah? 3. What does God tell Noah to bring into the ark with him?

Obedience is the very best way to show that you

believe. Doing exactly what the Lord

commands, doing it happily.

Action is the key, do it immediately,

joy you will receive.

Obedience is the very best way to show that you

believe.

Song from Lina’s childhood.

4. Who were the people God told Noah to bring into the ark?

5. How did Noah respond to God’s command

in vs.22? 6. The ark is a picture of Christ for the

believer. Can you think of some ways how that is?

Personal Application 7. How is our culture similar to the one

described in Genesis 6? 8. Why is it hard to obey God when everyone

around you isn’t? 9. Have you ever had to obey God when it

didn’t make sense? Explain. 10. Is there something God may be asking you

to do right now that makes no sense? How will you respond to God’s command?

Day Four: The Rain Came

After doing what God commanded and building the ark, Noah was finally told to get into the ark. A storm was on the way. I can’t imagine how Noah must have felt, can you? Start today’s time with the Lord by asking Him to open your heart to his voice. Ask for a sensitive and obedient spirit. Now read Genesis 7. Exploring the Text 1. Why did God want Noah to take pairs of animals into the ark? 2. How many days did God promise the rain would last?

Page 12: Rescued Genesis 6-7 Week Five: Saved from the Culture...God is a God of grace but He’s also a God of justice. How do you see that in Genesis 6-7? It took 120 years for Noah to build

3. Why do you think God waited an additional 7 days once Noah got into the ark and before the rain started?

4. What was Noah’s response in vs.5?

5. How old was Noah when the flood started?

Waiting for God to work does not mean sitting around doing

nothing. We must do what we can, while we can, as long as we

don’t run ahead of God.

Personal Application 6. Why does obedience require faith? 7. Why is it sometimes difficult to obey God’s

commands? 8. God patiently waits for men and women to

respond to him. How is God being patient towards you right now?

Day Five: Shut In

God always does what He promises He will do. Everything He says proves true. You can be sure of that. Let’s re-read Genesis 7 as we consider the impact of God’s judgment on the earth. Exploring the Text

1. In vs.16, the Bible says that “the Lord shut him in”. Describe how that may have looked like.

2. Hebrews 11:7 describes Noah as a man of faith. According to what we have learned of Noah, in what ways was Noah faithful?

3. Describe the stages of the flood as described in vs.17-24.

4. How long did the waters prevail on the earth after the rain stopped?

5. Make a list of who made it through the flood.

6. God is a God of grace but He’s also a God of justice. How do you see that in Genesis 6-7?

It took 120 years for Noah to build the ark. It was as long as one and a

half football fields. It was as high as a four-store building.

Experts estimate that as many as 45,000 animals

could have fit into the boat.

Personal Application

7. Sometimes God shuts us in for our own protection. Has that ever happened to you?

8. Noah certainly lived against the grind of his culture. In what ways are you living against the grind in your culture?
