2016
RALEIGH COUNTY SPOKES IN THIS ISSUE: STUDENTS SUCCESS
In September, the Raleigh SPOKES
students spent about 20 hours
learning nutrition facts and how that
knowledge could be applied
to healthier eating habits. On
October 6, the WVU Extension
Nutrition Counselor Brandi
Cook "made it real" by taking the
SPOKES class grocery shopping.
The class visited the Harper Road
Kroger and Brandi took them on a
walk-through of the aisles. They
learned how to read nutrition labels
and heighten their awareness of the
cost per unit tags on the
shelves. After reviewing the food
groups, Brandi gave each student $10
and challenged them to purchase food to make a nutritious, balanced meal.
Armed with their $10, students
scattered in the store and
began reading nutrition labels,
comparing items, and budget
shopping. They purchased meats,
vegetables, fruit, and bread. At the
end of the
shopping spree,
everyone was
comparing their
selections and
taking pride in the fact that their food
items passed Brandi's good nutrition
test.
Brittany Davis, Summers County
SPOKES student recently obtained her
HSE and was recognized with a luncheon
and Pizza Hut. Congrats Brittany!

Heather Odom McDowell County SPOKES Student
MCDOWELL COUNTY, WV (WVVA) –
By Paul Hess (WVVA Article)
Thirty-seven adults in McDowell County have something to be proud of. They received their high school
equivalency diplomas during a program held Monday night.
The graduates attended one of three programs; Catholic Charities Adult Education, McDowell County
SPOKES, or McDowell County Adult Education.
"It means a lot. It's something that I really wanted. It gives me something that my kids can look forward to,"
says graduate Heather Odom.
Odom says it took her about eight months to complete the program at Catholic Charities and SPOKES. Her
next step is to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and then a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Distinguished students were given special recognition during the program, including the Academic Student of
the Year and the Spokes Student of the Year.
Braxton County SPOKES Success By Sandra Adkins
Kayla McCourt is a student who has been with SPOKES for the past two
months. After earning certifications in WIN, WV Welcome, North Star
Digital Literacy, and Customer Service Certification she has enrolled as
a full time student with Kaplan University to pursue her dream of
becoming a certified Medical Assistant. She is a diligent, hardworking
student who is constantly achieving every goal she has set for her future.
Way to go Kayla!!! I see a bright future ahead for you and your career.

During a recent staff meeting, Regional
Coordinator Shawn Cook facilitated a
Strategic Doing exercise for which staff
walked away with Big Easy strategies: a
BIG project that will provide positive
impact to the SPOKES program and
students, while EASY to accomplish. The
SPOKES Career Development
Consultants (CDCs) committed to
performing enhanced mock interviews
with students outside the CDC's usual
territory.
Mock interviews simulate real job
interviews and are conducted with
prospective job interviewees
(students). Students become very
acquainted/comfortable with their CDC
therefore not allowing for the mimicry of
a realistic job interview simulation for
training purposes.
The SPOKES CDCs decided to
coordinate their schedules periodically to
visit one another’s classroom for the
purpose of conducting enhanced mock
interviews, serving as unfamiliar
interviewers to the students. The goal is
to create a greater imitative practice. For
the inexperienced
interviewee/student,mock interviews
provide an excellent picture of what to
expect. In this situation, CDCs not only
help students reduce their stress and
anxiety while coaching them on any
shortcomings, but also acknowledge
areas in which they excel, thus boosting
their confidence.
Monroe County CDC Tina White, along
with Instructor Tammy Judy, arranged
mock interviews for students to be held
with CDC Joy Walker. In the process,
Ms. Judy recommended video-recording
the activity. This proved to be a valuable
exercise to evaluate the non-verbal
aspects of the student’s performance,
such as smile, enthusiasm, energy level,
voice, posture, and other behaviors. In
addition, observing the recording not
only assists the students, but also offers
CDCs an opportunity to examine their
manner conveyed while serving as an
interviewer and polish their own skills.
Plans are to continue fine tuning this Big
Easy to enhance student’s interview
success increasing lasting first
impressions with employers, and
securing employment opportunities.
Mock Interviews by Tina White
Local community members, Robin
Morgan - WorkForce West Virginia, Joy
Walker - CDC, SPOKES, Tammy Toney
- Raleigh County Adult Education,
Tiffanie Bishop - CDC, SPOKES and
Mary Lynn Flint, Fayette County Adult
Education participated in an "informal
Candid Community Conversation"
focusing on turning our five greatest
challenges for West Virginia into our
greatest opportunities. It was hosted by
the Appalachian Higher Education (AHE)
Network - a peer learning group
composed of postsecondary programs
and/or resource centers in 120 states of
the Appalachian region.
THIRD TIMES A CHARM By Helena Ellis Jessica Mitchell, 29, attended twice before, and
returned the third time in October. This time,
however, was different. She came motivated to
tackle the TASC exam, whereas in times past it was
all talk and no work. She passed all the subjects of
the TASC with the exception of math--she did not
pass the first two attempts. Jessica would not be
detered. On the third attempt, she made the passing
score and reached her goal. Jessica was so happy she
passed she was completing job applications on-line,
just so she could enter her new status: "high school
equivalency" in the education section. Jessica's
future plans are to work until the fall 2017 and
then enter college.
Guest speaker Lauren Weatherford of WVU Extension
Service visited the classroom on November 9th to present Stress
Less with Mindfulness. An appropriate topic with the
upcoming holiday season. Students learned about stress and
how our reactions to stress can cause all manner of issues. A
fun activity during the session is eating a chocolate kiss. While we
will typically rush to open and eat the chocolate, Lauren has us
unwrap it carefully and notice various things: is the label printed
on one or both sides, did you rip the foil wrapper, how does it
smell, and then she finally let us eat it. However, we were
directed to let it melt and enjoy the smoothness of the
chocolate. All in all, a reminder to slow down and enjoy
the journey. Lauren plans to return on a regular rotation in 2017.

Recently Gena Tinnel completed her
Core Skill Mastery course and
received her CSM Certificate of
High Performance. CSM is a
different type of certification.
According to the CSM website "it
demonstrates to employers the
characteristics that they value in all
employees, and indicates to colleges
those students who will thrive. The
skills and traits certified in the CSM
Certificate are challenging even for
college graduates, but the next-
generation technology of the CSM
Course means that it can be attained
by students of ALL educational
backgrounds."
(https://csmlearn.com) But that isn't
all the Gena completed this month.
She also took her WorkKeys test
earned her Gold Level National
Career Readiness Certificate. Way
to go Gena! Next up, finishing
requirements for the Ready to Work
Certificate.
November 15th found the SPOKES students,
Family Learning Center Career Pathway
students and Family Learning Center Adult
Education students coming together to learn
and earn their CPR and First Aid
Certification. RESA 1 Public Service
Instructor Larry Freeland taught the class for
the 12 students in attendance. Mr. Freeland is
also working with the staff of the daycare
center to recertify their employees. Thank you

cards in PC’s, and collected e-cycle
for pickup from several schools.
Jeremy Ball Summers County At Summers County High School, I
responded to work orders that
include imaging of computers;
access controls settings, camera
issues, issues with students going
around the state filters, and wireless
issues. At Summers Middle Schools,
I responded to work orders that
include computer imaging, repair,
wireless issues, issues with students
going around the state filters, and
access controls settings. Hinton Area
Elementary School, I responded to
work orders that include computer
imaging, projectors, and access
controls. At Jumping Branch
Elementary, I responded to work
orders that include access controls
settings, wireless issues, imaging of
computers. At Talcott Elementary
School, I responded to work orders
that include computer imaging and
access controls settings. At
Summers County Board Office, I
have worked on day to day issues for
the users; access control issues,
imaging computers and sorting thru
equipment. The big project is
keeping the 1 to 1 computer running,
also I installed a Barracuda Web
Security Gateway. I also attended a
state Networking workshop in
Bridgeport.
Ryan Blankenship McDowell County I spent the first week taking a CCNA
boot camp. The second week I spent
collecting and moving e-cycle
around the count. The third week I
spent working on several software
and data migration projects.
Vince Estepp McDowell County Work orders and tasks included
completion of contractors running of
phone line for school. Replacement
of interactive Smart Board projector
bulbs. Upgrading mobile lab cart to
Win10 for teacher’s Minecraft
program. Running/replacing new
wireless drops for schools.
Distribute to appropriate schools the
Lego Robotics kits for the After
School program project. Participated
in a CCNA Routing and Switching
Boot Camp training for Cisco
Certified Network Associate
certification. Performed county-
wide sweep for collection and
storage of e-cycle. Debugging Smart
Board connectivity in the class
rooms. Upgrading mobile lab math
cart to Carnegie’s latest voice pack
requirement.
Kenneth Lester Monroe County Over the past month work orders
have leveled off at about 10 open.
Some more project related items
have been added. The meeting /
Polycom equipment at the VoTech,
updating student images for WVEIS,
and AV installations for classrooms
are just some examples. We will
issue ChomeBooks to 7th graders at
MVS and PMS over the next month.
Donald Muncy Mercer County Employment began on November
10th. Went to RESA office in
Beckley to get an ID badge,
orientation, training, and necessary
paper work. Arrived at the Mercer
County Technology Office to meet
everyone and have the Monday
morning meeting. Drove to
Bluefield Middle School with Aiden
to assist in a network outage.
Discovered two failed switches that
needed replaced on the second floor
of the building. Traveled to PVMS to
assist Aiden, installed software on
the secretary’s computers, inspected
a Smart Board, and followed up on a
request from the principal to look at
the Head Cooks computer. Traveled
to RESA at Beckley to go over new
accounts and train on necessary
paperwork and reporting. Traveled
back to the Raleigh County Board
Office for paper work. Went to
PSHS to recover video footage from
the DVR system, replace a printer,
and install accounting software.
Brought a printer back to the office
from PSHS to troubleshoot, which
nothing is wrong with the printer.
Went to the Mercer County Board
Office to fix a printer, and get a
Mercer County ID Badge. Went to
PMS to get all workstations ready for
testing. Went to Glenwood to install
printers on several systems, work on
a printer in a classroom. Fix a
computer that would not start, or
provide sound before coming
inoperable. Printer in music room
does not print, so brought it back to
the office to look at.
Walter Newcomb McDowell County I and my colleagues attended a week
long Sixty hour Cisco training course
that furthered our abilities and
enriched the services that we
provide. I have taken the initiative in
the After School Robotics program
and will be hosting a DYI/Lego
robotics workshop on the 19th. Also,
I am working with the County
Administration on a BYOD plan for
the Students and Staff. This plan will
start to coalesce in the coming
months and I will continue to report
on it progress accordingly.
Nathanial Perry Raleigh County Responsibilities this month have
shifted from deployment to general
duties. With the completion of iPad
and MacBook deployment I was able
to start working on my backlogged
work orders. I have made good
progress towards clearing my work
order portal and getting back to a
“business as usual” schedule. I have
one special project I will be
performing the week of
Thanksgiving, and that is updating
the old lab computers at SSCES.
Joshua Prudich Mercer County This month I have replaced a few
projectors under warranty. I have
also hung five view sonic touch tvs
as well as five view sonic tvs. I have
replaced a printer and installed to the
lab. I Have reimaged multiple
laptops and desktops. I have
removed spyware and malware from
several desktops. I have resolved
issues with headphone jacks and
issues with drivers.
Justin Prudich Mercer County We have been working on our
scheduled visits still. I have been
visiting my assigned schools on a
weekly basis. We have just gotten in
the new replacements for the smart
projectors and I have installed a few.
We are still cleaning up getting the
art and music teachers new touch
displays and laptops. We are in the
process of refreshing a few schools
labs and servers.
Aaron Reed Mercer County I have created a Windows image for
the Transformer T100A model Asus
Transformer Books running
Windows 10 Education x86. I am
attempting to use a program called
CloneDeploy to simplify distribution
of the image due to the complexity
of imaging a mixture of 32-bit and
64-bit systems with System Center.
Because the Transformer Books use
UFEI instead of traditional BIOS,
32-bit boot images cannot start a 64-
bit image on the T100HA models.
I’ve used CloneDeploy to speed up
the creation of HomeBound laptops.
Because System Center requires all
images to be sysprepped, and the
HomeBound computers are not
added to a domain, the local user
accounts’ SID changes when
sysprep.exe is run, which breaks the
local group policy assignments.
CloneDeploy allows a computer to
be imaged without sysprep, which is
faster than our previous method of
using Windows System Restore.
Princeton Primary is currently using
a county refurbished server running
Windows Server 2012 R2, but I have
determined their previous server data
cannot be recovered without
repairing the original server. I’ve
installed a county refurbished server
at Montcalm Elementary and added
it to the MERCER.DOM domain. I
have also recovered the previous
server files that need to be
transferred to the new server via the
latest Windows Backup which was
still completing backups when the
server began to fail in early
September. Work is now focused on
establishing a trust between the
MERCER.DOM domain controllers
and the state domain controllers to
sync user names based on their
Office 365 account settings. I have
been working with Chris Casto on
establishing the trust via LDAPS.
Configuration is almost complete on
Chris’ end, and I expect we will be
syncing users within the month.
Aiden Vrenna Mercer County Worked together to replace all of the
workstations and laptops at
Montcalm and to switch that site to
our county domain.
I found two 48-port switches literally
burning at Bluefield Middle - a 5510
and a 4548. I found them powered
down initially. I power-cycled, and
they worked at first. I left to test the
network in a nearby lab, and by the
time I got there, the network was
down again. Returning to the MDF I
found the switches were powered
down again, and I saw and smelled
the acrid smoke of burning
electronics. Removing those units
was of course the first action. I
connected the router to a different
switch, restoring most of the school,
then returned with replacement
devices, resolving the issue. Various
additional things broke, and were
fixed.
John Watson RESA 1 This month has been busy with
Internet connectivity issues in
several SPOKES locations. Printer
issues, DVD drive delivery, and
general repairs have been addressed
while at these locations as well.
Clean up of configuration files in
routers is an ongoing task this
month. Assisting with the
procurement of computer furniture
and office divider walls for the
technology office was a task of
opportunity that we worked into the
schedule. The Network Strategies
and Design conference in Bridgeport
rounded out the month.
Joel Weiss Mercer County Over the past month, I attended the
state TSS conference. I also assisted
our phone contractor with the
installation of 15 IP phone drops at
Bluefield Middle School. I have been
working in my assigned schools on
various technology repairs and
upgrades.
