Take-home 1 - COMMUNICATE
Take-home 2 - CAMPAIGN SIZE MATTERS
“educational”
“simple/small”
“complex/large”
Take-home 3 - DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS DIFFER
Take-home 4 - DEADLINES ARE ENFORCED
Take-home 5 - PROCESS TAKES TIME
COMMUNICATIONS• with NSF Program Officers• with EOL (me)• with representatives of LAOF
Partner Organizations
Recommendations:• Maintain ongoing dialogue• Ask questions• Ask for advice & help

• Name of project• Investigator(s)• Short science summary• Location• Time• Facilities & instruments• Expendables• NSF Program Officer’s name
Submission: Any time of the year - email
Letter of Intent
THE QUEUE
Facility Request• Part I: General Information• Part II: Project Management• Part III: Data Services• Part IV: Individual Facility Forms
(different for each platform)Recommendations:
• Talk to facility personnel to discuss requirements
• Ask for what you NEED!
Submission: 1 July or 1 December (18 months ahead of campaign)
Presentation Slides• Used by Observing Facilities Assessment
Panel (OFAP) Lead Reviewer to introduce project to Panel
• Summarize hypotheses & science objectives
• Describe experiment design• Explain intellectual merit• Limit < 5 slidesRecommendation:
• make it intriguing & interesting
Submission: Same Time as EDO & Facility Request
SCIENCE PROPOSAL• At least one science proposal has to
justify requested LAOF• Submission via Fastlane to NSF
(peer review)• “Sanitized” version of proposal to
NCAR /LAOF partner organization(s)
• Proposal shared with OFAP• Mirrored process for NCAR-led &
agency proposals Submission: Negotiate with NSF Program
Officer to time with Facility Request
Complex/Large Projects are a
two-step process requiring additional
documentation & time
• Establishes overall scientific justification of the program
• Formal proposal to NSF via Fastlane• No more than two PIs on proposal • Table that lists all NSF and non-NSF
facilities included in program and their approximate cost
• Requires preliminary cost estimates from facility providers
• Reviews determine whether PI is invited to continue and encouraged to submit science proposal and facility request
SCIENTIFIC PROJECT OVERVIEW (SPO)
Submission: 15 January, two years ahead of campaign
Experiment Design Overview (EDO)
• Comprehensive in nature• Describes overall concept of
experiment design, resource needs and management of campaign (including data)
• Coverage of NSF and non-NSF facilities
• No more than 2 Lead PIs• 25 page limit
Submission: 15 January, two years ahead of campaign

• Importance and uniqueness of program
• Experiment design• Operations• Platforms and instrumentation• Project planning, management &
implementation• Data management• Science team• Safety/security• Resource and cost
OFAP CHARGE
Optimization
• All material shared with requestor• Invited to respond (10 days)• Final report to NSF
• Feasibility of project• Cost• Safety/security• Efficiencies/optimization
NSF PO makes final funding decision within approximately 2 months of based on feasibilities, OFAP assessment, budgetary and scheduling constraints
• PI notification through NSF PO• Allocation letter
Final Steps
EDUCATIONAL REQUESTS
• Total: $200K per year (Deployment Pool)
• 25K per request• Use of LAOF as tools for classroom
instruction & hands-on learning experiences
• Undergraduate and graduate classes• Requirement for outreach component• Platforms of choice: DOW, MGAUS/
MISS, ISFS
• Two submission deadlines: 1 March & 1 September six months ahead of intended deployment
• Request Form (1 page) & Proposal (< 5 pages) • Interaction directly with LAOF partner organization• Repeat requests only every other year• Can’t interfere with science deployments!• Review by 2 OFAP and 3 Facility Managers• Final Report needed one month after end of deployment
