I'll keep this short...I definitely understand the pros for allowing trading on Easter Sunday but in my opinion, one day in a year isn't going to make or break a business. Hi NikkiThis is just my thoughts to you Question. - what is the most treasured thing to you. Money or family. We have whittled down family time until there is no more. We allowed weekend shopping, first Saturday, now Sunday. First half days now wholedays, later or longer hours opening, and who suffers. - everyone except the people at thetop making the money and they don’t care because they have enough money to be at homewith their family. Yes they are making jobs for People offering good wages and penal rates then when thesepoor people are hooked (it’s like a drug), they are threatened that if they don’t take paycuts or work for no penal rates they will loose their jobs. “There are plenty of others outthere that will work for your wage”. Unfortunately the small money and long hours theyare now working has become a lifestyle. Starts off at good wage few hours then it’sreversed to get the same But these people don’t weigh up the costsAustralians talk about the stolen generation, widen your out look, we are all living thisnight mare right now and the children now that become tomorrow’s adult will have noidentity of their own as - * parents both working (for pittance) use to be a good wage but the price of living gies upand wages stay the same or get less.* children don’t have parents at home.* they send more hours per week in daycares or with other people bringing them up. Theygo home to sleep, fight or “in their parents eyes be naughty”, get growled at, crythemselves to sleep, get smacked or punished. Where all they want is some love or andattention from their parents* look at the families that are the happiest and those children that grow into the “better”adults- those with lots of money those without- those with children in front of technology those that aren’t - those that get out and play with parents in the garden or those that don’t because theparents are too tired- children that are fed good round well balanced meals or those that live on cheaptakeaways or convenience meals- those that sit at a table to eat (where conversations are made about the day or those thatsit in their rooms or in front of TV with no conversation * many parents that once had good jobs then get made redundant end up on booze or worsedrugs and then there are those that over capitalise with money they get then looseeverything when hard times hit or if they won’t take the pay cut or be happy about notgetting penal rates* if they never had it in the first place they learn to live with what they have, kids don’t askfor what they know they can’t have and they know how to “do” things, to make things, tobe resourceful, to play, to socialise, to communicate, have morals and ethics. They knowwhere they come from, they have respect for themselves and others - property and self. They know that everyone works hard for what they get and respect that fact. The attitudeof easy come easy go is not in their vocabulary. - back when a work day was 8:30-5 5 days per week and no one opened for xmas or Easterwe didn’t die of starvation the community didn’t go bankrupt. The community looked afterthe community, there was no one living on the street unless it was their choice, no oneneeded drugs to survive the lack of money, and people were having real picnics and realfamily time. And people were not afraid to have fun, not afraid to relax, and not afraid to

give new things a try. Unfortunately if some open and others don’t eventually those that don’t are put into aposition where they have to as it becomes a competition for the money that’s out there. -should be same rules for everyone.

So do I want Easter Sunday open for trading - certainly not. If you don’t want to celebratethe religious reason for the day change the name and celebrate “the family”. Ask the generation that knows what it is like to only have a 5 day working week. Ask themif life today is better. Most will say they have more material things and less personal things. They will say theyhave bigger wages but less money, they will say they have bigger houses but less love tofill them, they will say, we wish we could have the good ol’ days back where there wasless stress, and complications, and more family time. Keep East Sunday closed preserve this day. If not for you for those that would be made towork yet another day because they think they are doing themselves a favour and service bybringing in a “little” extra money.

Make the politicians work that day, no family time, for the pittance that those working willbe offered. Better still make them watch“clockwork orange” the movie - because that’s where we are heading. And these peoplethat are passing these open hours policies are and will be the blame for this future.

I am an educator and I have seen the change in the children over the last 40years and I’mtelling you now we are not living in a better or more comfortable world.

Hi there,

Easter Sunday Shop Trading

Council recently adopted a draft policy for Easter Sunday Shop Trading. Inthis draft policy, Council allows retailers to decide whether they want toopen or not on Easter Sunday. Council recognises that for some people,Easter Sunday is a special day when they do not wish to work or shop. Forothers, it is an opportunity to be open for business on a day when there aremore visitors to the District.

I write this email to invite you to have your say on this policy. Councilvalues community input on these decisions. Hi Nikki,

I'll just have to leave it thanks, I'll be overseas so can't really plan to call or Skype.

I just think that the theory of staff being able to refuse to work, with no repercussions, is

completely out of touch with real life.

Also, in the interests of turning faults into features, with every other tourist town under the

sun open for shopping on Easter Sunday, I think we could make it a feature we are proud of,

that in the Ruapehu District, we put our families first and give them the chance to enjoy our

"Greater Outdoors" together.

That's all I'd say at a hearing, maybe you could pass it on to the councillors for me?

Thanks

Your Thoughts The myth that workers get to choose whether to work or not, with no repercussions, is pretty old school.

Retail workers have so few days off, three and a half per year I think.

Keep the status quo please, no Easter Sunday trading.

Is this an actual submission? It says "thoughts", I'm curious about the legality of the wording.

Your Thoughts Yes we all like to go shopping but there is only so much money to go around. I remember the days when we had all weekends shop free and we spent time with people Life is so precious why not think outside the square and close the shops on the weekends If they are not open everyone will do their shopping on the days that they are open FACT

Time is more precious than shopping and I’m a shopaholic 😉

Kia ora

I would like to strongly support the proposed Easter Sunday Shop Trading Policy and

agree that Easter Sunday trading should be allowed throughout the district. However, I do not

support the opening of liquor outlets on Easter Sunday should this come up for discussion

throughout the process.

Many tourist areas throughout the world offer Easter Sunday trading and as RDC is

continuing to promote the district as a tourist destination I believe allowing trade on

Easter Sunday aligns with these goals.

36 other councils throughout New Zealand have voted to allow Easter Sunday trading

as per http://www.retail.kiwi/advocacy/shop-trading-hours/easter-sunday-trading so

why should Ruapehu traders be disadvantaged?

If council proceeds with the proposed Easter Sunday Shop Trading Policy, it should

be district wide, NOT restricted to particular areas. All businesses in the region should

be given equal opportunity.

The Easter Sunday Shop Trading Policy simply allows those businesses that wish to

open the ability to do so, they are not being forced to open so if the business owner

wishes to observe the holiday on personal or religious grounds then they are still

freely able to do this.

Employees have a legislative right refuse to work on Easter Sunday if they do not

want to, so arguments saying that it will infringe on days off or family time are

completely irrelevant.

While I understand that there are many people that observe Easter Sunday as a

religious holiday, there are also many who do not. Those that observe the holiday do

not have to open for business, work as an employee or shop as a consumer on this

day, but for those that do not observe the holiday, it gives them the freedom to do so.

Please feel free to contact me should you require any further input or clarification.

Your Thoughts Let the shop owners decide for themselves if they want to be open and if their staff want to work, then why not. In those weekends there are heaps of visitors passing through and the town looks dead. A bit of life would be nice.

Your Thoughts Hello,

I live in neighbouring Taupo district where Easter Trading has been allowed for some time. I am opposed to such a practice and think a couple of days a year is not too much to ask for people to have time off for rest. Even though Ruapehu’s proposal allows for people to refuse work on Easter Day, the reality of employees’ situations would often mean they will have little choice on the matter and could easily feel pressured into working at Easter. To promote well-being and better work/ life balance Poland has recently voted in favour of restoring the requirement for shops to be closed on all Sunday’s from 2020 (except for necessary services/ shops). Germany also has restrictions on trading hours to protect people’s health. I believed that commercial activities should have certain restrictions to ensure that such activities serve people and not the other way around. I strongly hope Ruapehu District protects Easter from commercialisation.

Your Thoughts I am against Easter Sunday trading as it should be a day spent with family and friends. people can be too busy working and not enough time living and sharing laughs and making memories or even de-stressing from the week. I may live out of the area but i do spend a lot of time in the Ruapehu district as well as owning a house just out of Taumarunui. I enjoy the peace and quiet of the district and the fact that most shops are only open till 12:00pm on a Saturday and closed on a Sunday. I dont have any strong arguments supporting my point of view except that people matter, workers will be replaced but you cant replace time spent with family and friends

Regards David McFadzean

P.S given the choice would you rather be at work or doing something more worth while?

Your Thoughts I personally don't think it should happen, I am Christian, and think it important to remember what the day is representing, and time should be spending with family. I believe he died for us so we can have hope, and a life after death, eternal life... Shops open, employees don't really have a choice.

How the some people are calling Christmas , happy holidays...it's wrong! Christ mas is about group or mass of people getting together to remember Christ and his birth. Thanks for asking our opinions, my opinion
