HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK Summary of deaths reported nationally: 7 deaths notified contrywide Week 37 from 12 th to 18 th September, 2016 Four deaths due to Malaria were notified including two deaths from Mbuye HC of Ruhango DH, one death from Kabutare DH and Gikore HC of Kibilizi DH. Three deaths due to severe pneumonia under five years were notified from Kibuye RH, Gihundwe DH and Ruhango PH. Food poisoning One hundred and one case were notified including 32 cases from CHUB, 13 cases from Kabutare DH and 56 cases from Mbazi HC of Kabutare DH. The common source was the consumption of meat from a dead cow due to anaplasmosis. The cow died on 10th September 2016 and butchered the following day. The first cases consulted health facilities on 13th September 2016 with abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. In this outbreak, one death occurred community was reported.

1. Dog bites in Rubengera Health Center, Karongi District

Eleven  dog  bites  cases  were  reported  from  Rubengera  HC  of  Kibuye  District  Hospital  in  Karongi  district.    Eight  of  them  were  children  

aged  less  than  15  years  while  three  were  adults.  All  of  them  were  from  Rubengera  sector    and  were  transferred  to  the  district  hospital  for  post  exposure  prophylaxis.  The  bites  were  by  three  different  unknown  dogs,  one  of  which  was  later  killed  by  the  community.  

2. National upsurge

in malaria cases

There  has  been  a  steady  increase  in  

the  number  of  malaria  cases  reported  country-wide  during  the  last  12  weeks.  As  seen  in  figure  1,  the  number  of  all  ma-laria  cases  increased  from  14,747  in  week  32  (early  August)  to  54,424  in  week  43.  A  total  of  327,  814  cases  were  reported  during  the  12-­week  period.  Eight  districts  (figure  2)  accounted  for  50%  (164,833)  of  the  malaria  cases  reported  during  same    period.
