Republicrsquos pro-active media campaign brought the republican message to an international audience of millions over the royal wedding weekend
The lsquoNot the royal weddingrsquo street party Republicrsquos flagship event on the day of the wedding was attended by over a thousand republicans and featured on all of Britainrsquos major TV channels Channel 4rsquos Jon Snow Skyrsquos Adam Boulton and a crew from BBCrsquos The One Show visited the party to speak to Republic activists and supporters as did journalists from around the world Republic spokespeople spent all day giving interviews to reporters with many volunteers and party-goers also speaking to the press
The unprecedented exposure drove tens of thousands of republicans to Republicrsquos website Facebook page and Twitter feed Many had never heard of Republic before lsquoAt last a pressure group that campaigns for exactly what Irsquove been wanting to see for yearsrsquo said one new supporter
Republicrsquos media profile had increased steadily since January when a steering committee of volunteers first met to plan a republican response to the wedding In the run up to April 29 Republicrsquos team of staff and volunteers were featured on BBC2rsquos Newsnight and Daily Politics Channel 4 News and Radio 4rsquos You amp Yours The Independent
newspaper also published a special feature on RepubliclsquoWe were always expecting lots of media interest as wersquod
made that a priorityrsquo says Republicrsquos campaign manager Graham Smith lsquoBut itrsquos fair to say we didnrsquot anticipate the huge level of interest that we received We were doing back-to-back interviews for 48 hoursrsquo
But Graham is eager to point out that media exposure is not an end in itself lsquoThe reason we placed such emphasis on the media is that it is the single most effective way of recruiting members and reaching new audiencesrsquo he explains lsquoNow we must turn all this new support into practical actionrsquo
lsquoWersquore looking forward to even more intensive campaigning as we prepare for jubilee year and work towards getting rid of the monarchy altogether by 2025rsquo

On April 30 we held the 2nd convention of the Alliance of European Republican Movements At the end of the meeting I announced the soon-to-be-launched Republic 2025 campaign a new campaign that will encompass all that we do over the coming months and years as a way of making it perfectly clear that we mean to achieve our aims
Republic 2025 is about laying down a marker stating unequivocally that this is not an intellectual exercise that it is a real movement for change By setting down a date we create a focus for our campaign and for our supporters we put it into a context and into a timeframe which people can relate to
As well as the palace and the media one of the biggest obstacles we face are republicans who say ldquowell I agree but it wonrsquot happen in my lifetimerdquo Well I simply ask ldquoWhy notrdquo It has to happen in someonersquos lifetime why not ours This isnrsquot something that will one day simply lsquohappenrsquo it is something that must be made to happen by people who believe in the cause of good democratic government
Over the past decades countless social and political changes have happened within the span of a few short years Major upheavals have taken place over a matter of months Just last year few would have predicted Mubarak would be ousted as president of Egypt any time soon Ten years ago most Americans would probably have said they were 20-30 years away from electing a black president In the 1980s gay rights and the environmental movement were minority interests that secured little political support now they are accepted by all mainstream parties Big things happen and they happen quickly
There is no reason why Britain canrsquot throw off the burden of our deeply undemocratic political system and vote to write a new republican constitution in the next 15 years The opportunities to make the case have never been better but we need to work now to make the most of those opportunities
A lot of the publicrsquos support for the monarchy is indicated in polls which only ask one simple question do you want the monarchy or do you
want to change That masks the large number of indifferent people who canrsquot see the point in change but arenrsquot bothered about the monarchy either And a lot of that support is wrapped up in the Queen herself
A poll published by the Guardian a week before the royal wedding suggested around 25 thought wersquod be better off without the monarchy Thatrsquos an increase during a time of saturation coverage of the royal family and the wedding Over the past 10-15 years the British people have become a lot more small-r republican than ever before by which I mean we see ourselves much more as citizens with rights rather than passive
subjects literally subject to a higher authority The expenses scandal freedom of information laws debates about the House of Lords and devolution have all heightened a sense of a need for change and a belief that change is possible
In this climate of changing attitudes and in the context of the ever-looming succession we have growth of republican movements in Europe and the Commonwealth Never before in the modern political era has there been such an active moderate and mainstream republican movement Here in the UK wersquore seeing thousands of people sign up to our campaign at a time of an avalanche of royal PR across Europe republican movements are being established and are growing ndash and of course are coming together to share ideas and tactics In the Commonwealth this is an issue that simply wonrsquot go away
For all these reasons and more we can believe it is very possible to achieve change in our lifetime well within our lifetime But itrsquos change that wonrsquot just lsquohappenrsquo itrsquos change that has to be made to happen and that comes down to you and all those in the country who aspire to see Britain become a genuinely full-blooded democracy
In our lifetime Graham Smith

Republic is seeking an urgent meeting with senior Metropolitan police officers after reports of peaceful republican protesters being pre-emptively arrested and released without charge over the royal wedding weekend
Republic has previously raised serious concerns over statements from Commander Christine Jones who oversaw the wedding security operation Her comments suggested police officers had sought to silence republican protests
lsquoWe must receive assurances from the police that the rights of republicans are equal to those of monarchists and everyone else in this countryrsquo said
Republic campaign manager Graham Smith lsquoThe police are there to serve and protect the people not to serve and protect the interests of the royal family and their supportersrsquo
Meanwhile Republic supporter Julian Huppert MP is seeking answers from the Metropolitan police over the arrest of Charlie Veitch a constituent who planned to protest at the wedding lsquoI am anxious to find out more about the circumstances behind Mr Veitchrsquos arrest and the intelligence on which the police actedrsquo Huppert told his local newspaper lsquoWe cannot allow free speech and peaceful protest to be criminalisedrsquo
Police under pressure to answer questions of republican arrests
Paul Flynn MP a distinguished supporter of Republic is planning to use a lsquonuclear optionrsquo to get round the ban on discussing members of the royal family in Parliament
Flynn was stopped from raising questions about Prince Andrewrsquos conduct by Commons Speaker John Bercow as the Parliamentary rulebook forbids such debate Now Flynn plans to sidestep
the convention which dates back more than 800 years by tabling a substantive motion criticising Andrew
lsquoI hope MPs of all parties will fall in behind me It is ridiculous that MPs are prevented from doing their jobrsquo Flynn told his local newspaper lsquoThis is a key issue involving vital trade contracts which we should be examiningrsquo
Republican MP defies ban on discussing royals in Parliament
Can you help us find an officeMany Republic supporters donrsquot realise that all our staff and volunteers currently work from home But Republic is growing ndash and wersquore soon going to need permanent London headquarters
We not only require office and meeting space for staff but also a base for volunteers and somewhere to hold media interviews This will become absolutely vital as we prepare for our jubilee campaigns
If you think you might be able to help with the provision of free or budget office space or would like to contribute to the cost of a commercial premises please contact Graham Smith on 07747 608 770 or email grahamrepublicorguk
Republicans from across Europe met in London on the day after the royal wedding for the second Convention of the Alliance of European Republican Movements (AERM)
The Convention was hosted by Republic and attended by republicans from the Netherlands Belgium Denmark Norway and Sweden Delegates explored opportunities for sharing expertise and resources pursuing joint campaigns and offering mutual support
The AERM was launched in Stockholm last year at the time of Swedish Crown Princess Victoriarsquos wedding to create a network of republican movements in all the European countries that continue to have monarchs as their heads of state
lsquoSince the AERM was launched wersquove been busy sharing experiences and swapping ideas with our European counterpartsrsquo explained Republicrsquos
Graham Smith lsquoWersquore confident that over the next decade or so wersquoll see public opinion move more and more in our direction With our European friends also campaigning for democratic change our movement will be that much strongerrsquo
The Swedish royal wedding like Britainrsquos led to a surge in support for Republikanska Foumlreningen the republican campaign in Sweden lsquoA royal event makes people reflect on the institution of monarchy and in Sweden many arrived at the conclusion that this is an outdated and rather bizarre phenomenonrsquo said Helena Tolvhed a director of the campaign

Republic has submitted a formal complaint to the BBC Trust Editorial Standards Committee over the corporationrsquos coverage of the royal wedding
The complaint accuses the BBC of breaching its agreement with Parliament to ensure that controversial subjects are treated with due accuracy and impartiality and that a wide range of perspectives are given due weight
lsquoBy breaching the agreement in this way the BBC has implied that monarchism ndash in reality a highly contested political viewpoint ndash is uncontroversial and universalrsquo the letter says
Representatives of Republic met with BBC bosses in March to discuss their concerns and as a result republican views were featured more prominently on Radio 4 in the run up to the wedding But Republic has told committee members that the vast majority of the coverage was lsquocharacterised by a complete absence of journalistic scrutinyrsquo
The complaint quotes BBC journalist Raymond Snoddy who admitted on his blog that lsquomuch of the coverage was fawning and irredeemably trivial hellip It was an event that was ring-fenced with normally tough journalists asking no questions certainly not tough questionsrsquo

In our lifetime Graham Smith
ldquoIt has to happen in someonersquos lifetime why not oursrdquo
