Reported speech

• When we report someone’s words we can do it in two ways.

1. We can use direct speech with quotation marks

In reported speech the tenses, word-order and pronouns may be different from those in the original sentence.

• Now > then• Today > that day• This, these> that, those• Tomorrow> the day after/ the following day• Yesterday > the day before/ the previous day• Here > there

………….……..• Present simple> past simple• Present continuous > past continuous• Past simple/ present perfect > past perfect• Will > would

• Etc.

Verb tenses change• Direct speech: “I travel a lot in my job”• Reported speech: He said that he travelled a lot in

his job.• Direct speech: “The baby’s sleeping.”• Reported speech: She told me (that) the baby was

sleeping.• Direct speech: “ It will be nice to see you again.”• Reported speech: She said it would be nice to see

me again.

‘I am tired.’

‘I can’t go with you now.’

‘We ate a delicious pizza yesterday.’

She said she was tired.

She said she couldn’t go with me

then.

She said they had eaten a delicious pizza

the day before.

‘These cars are going to sell well.’

She said that those cars were going to sell well.
