Report to the Community

2016/2017

Message from the President

and Executive Director

As MobileMed begins its 50th year delivering healthcare services to those most in need in Montgomery County, it is striking how relevant our mission remains today. Access to affordable care remains a challenge for many people in our community. The uncertainty around federal policy changes only provokes more anxiety.

Both of us were honored to join MobileMed co-founder Dr. George Cohen at a celebration of Ken-Gar’s 125th anniversary. It was in a church basement in this community tucked between Kensington and Garrett Park where MobileMed volunteers first brought services to residents in need during the period when Montgomery County schools were first being integrated. Activities in other underserved neighborhoods soon followed. (See back page of this report.)

Now, like then, we are remarkably fortunate to be able to rely on diverse community partners, dedicated volunteers, and generous donors. With time, we also developed valuable relationships with Suburban Hospital and Adventist HealthCare (Shady Grove and Washington Adventist) that enable our patients to benefit from topnotch ancillary services and specialty care. Today, that also allows us to effectively coordinate transitions of care when our patients (or those without a regular primary care provider) are being discharged from the hospital or emergency room.

Montgomery County’s demographic shifts and economic disparities ensure that the need for our high-quality, comprehensive primary care are only growing. Utilizing both fixed site and mobile van clinics located throughout the County, MobileMed delivered 13% more medical encounters last year to our target population. In addition, our patients have better access to onsite integrated behavioral health services than ever before – our program with Aspire Counseling won the Achievement Award from the Maryland Counseling Association.

The support of various community stakeholders—government, nonprofits, corporate, individuals—remains absolutely essential to our success. Looking forward as a community health center, we are committed to making a difference for all of our patients. Regardless of the broader political landscape, MobileMed will be there for the low-income senior, for the Medicaid enrollee seeking respectful and culturally competent care, and for the uninsured resident who needs our services.

Helping Those in Need

“Min-Jee” has been a MobileMed patient for several years. Most recently, she was

experiencing recurring pain in her hip and pelvis. Her daughter translated Min-Jee’s

words: “I like [MobileMed]. I really appreciate it.” Smiling, her daughter added: “God

bless MobileMed. It’s helpful for everybody. [My mother’s] happy. God bless you.”

Compassionate Medical Care and Management

“Tirunesh” has high blood pressure, a chronic condition that requires consistent care and oversight. For several

years, MobileMed has helped Tirunesh manage her condition through regular medical visits, medications, patient

education on diet and exercise and overall support. As Tirunesh said, “I love MobileMed. [They have] nice doc-

tors, they help [with] anything I need. The doctors make better, any time. [Whatever] I need, they have a doctor

for everything.”

Comprehensive Primary Care

“Ida” has been an uninsured patient of MobileMed’s for three

years. Last year, she developed shingles, and came to MobileMed

for treatment. Recently, she was treated at our endocrine clinic, a

collaboration with Suburban Hospital and NIH. According to Ida,

“MobileMed does an excellent job. They treated me and

everything. It was perfect.”

A Valued Safety Net Provider

One of our long-time partners, Montgomery County DHHS, referred “Luthor,” an uninsured County resident, to

MobileMed. Suffering from heart problems, depression, and “night pains,” Luthor needed both immediate

medical care and case management. MobileMed addressed his medical needs, developing a care plan that

included a physical check-up, a flu shot, and integrated mental health services.

THANK YOU to our Organizational Supporters

MobileMed at 50 1968-2018

As MobileMed approaches the half-century mark, we give thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, staff, partners and donors who have served Montgomery

County’s most vulnerable. While the County has changed dramatically in many ways, MobileMed’s

mission to improve the health of low-income people is as relevant today as it was when Dr. Herman A. Meyersburg and Dr. George Cohen

opened our first regular clinic in the basement of the Ken-Gar Baptist Church.

In 2018, we will be commemorating our 50th Anniversary — details to follow!
