Printed ReleasesThe River Dell Board of Education's Newsletter carried information about

the project in its spring and fall issues. This newsletter is sent to 7,000 homes inthe River Edge and Oradell communities. Copies attached.

State Department of Educationcontact has been made with Dr. Max Bogart and Dr. William Brooks,

Division of Curriculum and Instruction, Office of the Arts and Humanities, in the NewJersey State Department of Education. Dr. Brooks visited River Dell on November 22to discuss the program.

Tentative plans have been made to involve New Jersey State Departmentpersonnel in the workshop River Dell will conduct on March 17, 1967. Correspondenceappended.

In-Service CourseAn in-service course in the history of art has been developed and offered

to teachers of humanities-related subjects throughout Bergen County. The coursemeets on Monday afternoons at 4:00 p.m., and consists of twelve lectures conductedby personnel from the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art under the generaldirection of Mr. Thomas Folds, Dean of Education at the Museum.

The course was also opened to interested members of the local community.To date, 393 teachers are formally enrolled in the course, and a large number ofunregistered students and citizens are attending regularly.

in order to publicize this event, the River Dell Humanities Centerdrafted the appended prospectus and circulated it to all superintendents of BergenCounty public schools, and the principals of all the county parochial secondary schools.See attached lists.

Contacts with Dr. Charles R. KellerDr. Charles R. Keller, former Director of the John Hay Fellows Program,

acted as a consultant for the River Dell Humanities Center at the conclusion of theplanning phase in August. At that time he conferred with members of the teachingteam who during the summer had developed the content of the course being offeredthis year.

On two occasions, Dr. Keller has explained the River Dell program toaudiences gathered from a wide area: first at the National Council of Teachers ofEnglish Humanities Conference held in New York City on October 23-25; and second,

at the N. C. T.E. Humanities Workshop held in Houston, Texas, on November 21-23.

Mr. Michael Keisman, assistant director for the River Dell project, wassent to Houston as a delegate also to distribute information about the program.

Dr. Keller has agreed to evaluate the program on March 16, and toserve as keynote speaker for the workshop planned for March 17. Correspondenceappended.

Contact with Parochial SchoolsSix students from Bergen Catholic High School are enrolled in the

Humanities Course. We are in touch with the school's guidance department in respectto these students' progress in the course.

An invitation to address the St. Peter the Apostle's Mothers Guild wasissued to the director. As a result of this address, the Guild is instituting ahumanities reading program in their junior high school grades 7 and 8. Furthercooperative contact will be maintained to establish this class. Federal Government Grants Title IIIProposal For Humanities ProThe application for federal funds to support

an extensive program in the Humanities atthe River Dell Senior High School has beenapproved by the federal government. A grantin the amount of approximately $110,000.00has been awarded under Title III of the Ele-mentary and Secondary Education Act of 1965for the establishment of a program in theteaching of the Humanities at the secondarylevel and the extension of this program to thecommunity.

In actuality, two separate applications weremade, one for a planning grant to cover in-servicc training and preparation for the coursehroughout the summer months; and a second

'for an operational grant to cover expensesattendant to the presentation of the coursenext year, the acquisition of materials, and thehiring of personnel needed to implement theprogram. Both applications were approved.

The following general aspects of the pro-posal comprise its total scope: first, a separate,interdisciplinary course in the Humanities willbe offered to seniors as a full-credit substitutefor the traditional senior year of English;second, with continued government support, aHumanities approach to teaching will graduallybe introduced within the English, history,foreign language, music and art classes ingrades nine through twelve; third, extensivein-service courses in the arts will be offered tothe faculty to train them for this program;and fourth, the entire program, to be de-veloped over a five-year period, will be offeredto educators, neighboring schools and thecommunity at large as a model for study andobservation. Mr. John Petroccione, curriculumcoordinator and chairman of the Science De-partment, has been named acting director ofthe entire project.

The Humanities course to be developed forseniors will replace English in the senior yearfor those students whose mechanical skills donot need remedial attention. The course willbe planned to give some insight into the de-velopment of human ideas as they have been

aexpressed in a variety of cultures through thereligion, social structure, buildings, paintings,music and literature of their people. In con-trast to the once-a-week lecture series experi-mentally presented this year, the course willrequire e) tensive readings, the frequent prep-aration of papers, .and independent research.Carrying major credit and meeting five daysa week, the course will be conducted by ateam of specialists woo will meet with theentire group of students at !east once a weekfor the general presentation of a topic, andwho will then individually meet with smallgroups during the balance of the week fordiscussion of the topic and specialized readingsassigned according to the ability of each group.At the present moment, 108 prospective seniorshave signed up for this course next year.

Such a program at the high school lev,11 isnot intended as the final experience in theHumanities for any student. Rather, its purposeis to open eyes and whet student appetites formore information. The primary goal of theprogram is to induce a "humanities mentality"in the students here at River Dell, hoping thattheir expanding interests will stimulate themto continue to read, look, listen and think inother than materialistic and mechanistic waysas they mature. Further, the long-range planis designed to give all our students an intro-duction to the arts which they would not re-ceive in the usual school curriculum and whichcould lead to a life-long widening of theircultural horizons. While such programs havebeen introduced by a number of the mostforward-looking schools in other states, RiverDell's proposal represents an innovation in theteaching of the Humanities in our own state.

Members of the team which will presentthe Humanities course next year include Mr.John Byerly, chairman of the English Depart-ment; Mrs. Barbara Gemignani, chairman ofthe Art Department; Dr. Richard Barrows,chairman of the Music Department; and Mrs.Helen Winn, chairman of the Library Depart-ment and coordinator of the program.

The application for federal funds was madein cooperation with members of the communityand representatives of the parochial schoolswhose advice and support were invaluable.Classes in the Humanities will be open to anylocal parochial school senior who can arrange

Senior Spring FairDraws Huge CrowdsThe fourth annual Spring Fair which was

held at the. River Dell Senior High School onApril 16 was an unqualified success. Conductedby the senior class as a fund-raising activity,the Fair was attended by more than 3,500parents and children who spent the m "rningand afternoon hours happily engaged in themany activities arranged for their pleasure.People of all ages could be observed fishingfor live fish in tanks, aiming balls and ringsat a number of targets, bowling on a realalley imported for the occasion, having theirportraits painted and their fortunes told, beingmade-up like clowns, and staring at the anticsof the "live gorilla."

Planned around a carnival theme and stagedin the senior high gymnasium, the Fair nettedthe senior class over $900 after all expenseswere paid. Students planned and constructedall the exhibits, manned the booths, and as-sumed responsibility for the financial success

Board Announces Transportation RoutesStudents who attend specialized classes at

public schools other than River Dell and wholive 21/2 or more miles from such schools areentitled by law to transportation at the ex-pense of the Board of Education. Partial re-imbursement for these transportation costs isprovided to the Board of Education by theState of New Jersey.

Students attending private non-profit schoolssimilarly remote from their homes are alsoentitled to transportation along these sameroutes. The River Dell Board of Educationhas allocated specific funds in the 1966-67budget for the transportation of those privateschool students in grades seven through twelvewho live in the River Dell community and whomay be eligible to use this transportation.Since the Board's financial responsibility islimited to these routes, it will not be able toprovide this assistance to private school stu-dents who attend schools which do not liealong these routes.

Placement of students in specialized classesfor the 1966-67 school year, and the resultingestablishment of next year's transportationroutes, should be completed by the River DellGuidance Department by June 1, althoughchanges can occur as late as August. TheBoard of Education is anxious to identify pri-vate school students who may be eligible to

use these routes so as to clarify the mechanicsof the operation. The assistance provided toprivate school students next year may takesuch forms as permits for transportation ona public or a River Dell vehicle to the extentof the designated established route, or of pay-ment within the limits of a River Dell routefor transportation on a bus already arrangedfor by parents of private school students.

In order to establish the number of stu-dents who may be eligible for such transpor-tation, the Board requests that interestedparents fill out the form at the conclusion ofthis article and mail it to:

Dr. Williams NamedPresident of M.S.S.C.Dr. Wm. Wendell Williams, superintendent

of the River Dell Schools, was installed aspresident of the Metropolitan School StudyCouncil on Saturday, May 14, at the Council'sAnnual Spring Conference held at Dellwood,New York. Dr. Williams, who has served aFpresident-elect this past year, has been activein the organization since River Dell was in-vited to join the Council in 1958.

The Metropolitan School Study Council iscomposed of 70 of the better school systems inthe New York metropolitan area, New Jerseyand Connecticut, including such outstandingsystems as Scarsdale, Darien, White Plains,Garden City, Manhasset, Ridgewood and Mont-clair, among others. The vast school systemof New York City is also a participating mem-ber.

The Metropolitan School Study Council isa cooperative research organization which isdevoted to the investigation of current edu-cational procedures and the development ofsuperior educational practices. By studying theconditions that make for excellence in in-struction, members are able to arrive at intel-ligent conclusions concerning those character-istics which must be maintained, eliminated,strengthened or created in their communitiesand schools. Knowledge of what the mostfavored schools are currently doing can providea predictive pattern for schools in general.

The M.S.S.C. was the first organization ofits kind and remains one of the largest. It wasfounded in 1942 and has since become themodel for more than thirty-five regional studycouncils that now exist throughout the UnitedStates.

Dr. Williams' responsibilities next year aspresident of the M.S.S.C. will involve him inthe supervision of a grant which the Councihas received under Title III of ESEA for theestablishment of a Social Sciences and Human-ities Center for the metropolitan area, and inthe actual administration of New Jersey'sshare in these funds.

Application Made ForFunds Under Title II

An application for Title II funds under theElementary and Secondary Education Act of1965 was made by the River Dell Schools inFebruary. This title of ESEA is designed tohelp improve the quality of instruction in thenation's schools by assisting them to provideinstructional materials not previously avail-able in sufficient quantity. Funds are allocatedto states for school library resources and otherprinted and published instructional materialsfor the use of children and teachers in all publicand private elementary and secondary schools.

Of all the Titles under ESEA, Title II is themost complicated to administer in every stateexcept New Jersey since it requires the localpublic agency, in most cases the local Boardof Education, to assume responsibility forordering, receiving, preparing and maintaininginventory for materials allocated to privateschools within its district. The State of NewJersey, however, has developed a unique andsimple plan in which the State Library De-partment assumes responsibility for privateschool materials, thus making the administrationof funds a simple matter for the local publicschool.

The River Dell Junior and Senior HighSchools have made application for the totalsum of $3,747.00 which will be used to pur-chase books, slides, filmstrips and records forthe two libraries.

,Learning LaboratoriesGiven To River Dell

Through the generosity of Mr. JosephGamache of Oradell, River Dell will receiveseveral portable learning - laboratory units asa gift to our schools. Mr. Gamache is vice-president and controller of the Business Equip-ment Group of Litton Industries which manu-factured these units.

Each machine contains equipment for mak-ing or playing a tape recording, and jacks forten, twenty or thirty head sets which can beused simultaneously by a full class of 30 stu-dents or by any part of a class. Tapes nowused in the language laboratory can be playedon this machine, and the advantages of thelanguage laboratory in foreign language teach-ing can thus be extended to the ordinary class-room. Because the student can "tar,. back" tothe tape and record his own voice, he can hearhis own errors in close juxtaposition with theinstructor's correct pronunciation on play-back.

Other uses which can be made of theseportable complexes include taping and storingfor future use of special lectures, major ad-dresses, concerts, dramatic productions, andradio or television coverage of historic events.The play-hack feature makes the machines in-valuable in speech therapy and for remedialwork with slow children. The units can alsohe used in the school libraries for musiclistening with no disturbance to other studentsusing these facilities.

The machines are lightweight, mounted onwheels, and easily moved from one area toanother. Since the generous gift to River Dellsupplies our system with more units than it

Entire Building Needed ForJunior High Exhibit

The River Dell Junior High School's tenthSpring Exhibit was held on the evening of Fri-day, May 6, and drew an enthusiastic crowdof parents and interested visitors.

A new procedure was initiated this year inan effort to give more display space to agreater number of student exhibits and at thesame time to alleviate the overcrowding ex-perienced in past years when the entire displaywas held in the gymnasium.

Two special events presented during theevening were the exhibit of gymnastic skillsand apparatus work by students in the gym-nasium, and the presentation of a fashionshow in the home economics rooms whichfeatured clothes designed and modeled by thegirls who made them. Each event was presentedthree separate times for the convenience ofvisitors.

Parents visited the library where new audio-visual equipment was on display, the cafeteriaswhich contained a large exhibit of student artwork, and the shop areas where students wereon hand to demonstrate the machines andexplain their technical application in woodand metal work. Projects in science, mathe-matics and other academic subjects were dis-played in regular classrooms.

The Spring Exhibit this year was plannedand organized by a committee under the di-rection of Guy Vander Vliet, industrial artsteacher.

Graduation Again To BeHeld Outdoors

Graduation exercises scheduled this year forWednesday evening, June 22, will again beheld outdoors in the River Dell football stadi-um. The class of 1966, which numbers 358students, is still too large to accommodatecomfortably in the gymnasium together withall the parents, relatives and guests who wishto attend.

With the additional space provided by mov-ing the graduation ceremonies outdoors, aminimum of four tickets can safely be issuedto each graduate. Students may apply for ad-ditional tickets which will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

Because of last year's highly successful ex-perience, present plans call for a repetition ofthe general procedures which governed RiverDell's first outdoor graduation. The proces-sional will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m., and thegraduates will again take their seats on thefield while spectators will be seated in thehome stands on the west side. Since it is im-perative to take advantage of the daylighthours, guests are asked to arrive well in ad-vance of the ceremonies so as not to delaythe program. Parking is available both at theregular school parking lots and behind thebleachers on the west side of the field.

In the event of rain on the 22nd, ceremonieswill be postponed to Thursday, June 23, atthe same time and place. Should bad luckpersist and rain continue to pour down onThursday, the ceremonies will still take placeon Thursday but they will be moved indoorsto the gymnasium, in which case only threemembers of any family can be admitted.Tickets in two different colors will be issuedto each graduate for the outdoor and the in-door ceremonies.

Senior Week Begins May 27,Ends With Prom

Only a few weeks remain in the schoolyear, and the impending great change in thelives of our 358 potential graduates is begin-ning to make itself felt. Senior week, whichbegins on May 27, marks the beginning of around of activities which will propel mem-bers of the Class of 1966 inexorably towardthe final moment when they have receivedtheir diplomas, moved the silk tassel to the"graduate side" of their mortar boards, andmust say farewell to the sheltering halls ofRiver Dell.

The senior year is one of effort, triumph,disappointments, sudden responsibility, and,often, the awakening of keen interest in anarea of study. By senior week, however, theagonies over college admission have been re-solved, decisions to enter the armed forcesor go to work have been made, and an air ofrelief pending the ultimate hurdle of finalexams begins to be felt in the school.

Senior week is marked by the exercise ofwell-earned minor privileges, fun and foolish-ness, as well as by the alarming experiencefor a selected few of teaching classes for onewhole day. This memorable week is brought

Students Invited ToCompete On TV Program

River Dell has been invited to appear onthe highly competitive quiz program "It'sAcademic" which is telecast at 7:00 p.m. onSaturday evenings over Channel 4 WNBC-TV.Students from River Dell will match wits andinformation with representatives from otheroutstanding high schools in. the New Yorkmetropolitan area in this fast-moving gamewhich requires quick intelligence and superiorknowledge on the part of the contestants.

Two separate appearances have been sched-uled, the first of which will be seen in thisarea on July 9. Representing River Dell areFrank Eisenberg and Eugene Rosenberg, bothmembers of the Class of 1966, and Joel Hay-cock, currently a junior. They will be seenin competition against students from NewRochelle Senior High School and East Islip,Long Island, High School.

The second appearance, to be presented ata yet undetermined date in the fall, will featurea different team composed of Joel Haycock,Eric Glandbard and Peter Greene, all seniorsnext year.

River Dell's contestants were selected aftera trial audition in New York at which fifteenof our students competed against each other.The final contestants were chosen by processof elimination.

Council Posts Assumed ByStudents During Town DayOn Monday, April 11, River Dell Senior

High School students elected by their col-leagues sat as governing members of the RiverEdge Town Council, in celebration of TownGovernment Day. Robert Nelkin led the meet-ing as River Edge's student mayor. Other stu-dent members of the Council were MerryWennerholm, Robert Lyttle, Jerome Healy,Linda Fey, Beth Bryant and Julian Seyss. Ap-pointed officials included Raymond Gehring asbuilding inspector; Linda Hawkins, boroughattorney; Peggy Paulsen, tax collector; JohnSchafer, magistrate; Joyce Bettes, boroughclerk; and Thomas Anita, tax assessor.

The meeting took place at 8:00 p.m. inthe Town Council's regular meeting rooms inBorough Hall and was attended by students,parents and interested citizens. Among the

Instrumental And ChoralGroups Present ConcertsThe Tenth Annual Spring Concert has been

presented in two sections this year because ofthe increased number of musical groups inthe school and the growing number of youngpeople whose work deserves to be heard. Thefirst concert, which took place on April 20in the senior high school auditorium, presentedRiver Dell's various instrumental groups in-cluding the concert band and orchestra, thestring orchestra, and the newly organizedtrumpet quartet. A second concert tookplace on May 18, also in the senior high schoolauditorium, and presented River Dell's choralgroups under the direction of Dr. RichardA. Barrows.

Works by River Dell alumni were featuredon the April 20th program. "Songs of David,"a poem written by Van Zwisohn ('64) andset to music by Ronald Frangipani, currentlyat the Eastman School of Music, was per-formed by the orchestra under the direction ofJohn Koshak. The stirring composition re-quired the services of four instrumental soloistsand was narrated by Lawrence Holpp andSusan Neuberger. Interpretations of the workwere executed by River Dell alumnus RaymondTurick in three modern sculptures which weredisplayed in the lobby.

The concert band introduced the originalwork of another River Dell alumnus, MarkBalkin, who conducted his own composition,"Lance and Sabre."

The band was also heard in a variety ofofferings including Sousa marches and med-leys from contemporary show music, conductedby Raymond Westerdale.

The program also offered selections fromthe classics presented by the orchestra andstring orchestra, featuring the works of Moz-art, Bach, Beethoven, Handel, and Tschai-kowsky.

The May 18 choral concert featured theperformance of Randall Thompson's Testamentof Freedom, a setting of four passages fromthe writings of Thomas Jefferson, performedby the Boys' Varsity Glee Club.

This 24-minute work is one of the mostpopular and stirring works in the literature formen's voices. Special accompanists for theperformance were Mrs. Albert Thompson,piano; Gregg Tallman, organ; and Alan Silver-man and Peter Ewald, percussion.

The 120-voice chorus was heard in presen-tations which ranged from Handel and Haydn.to contemporary composers Howard Hanson,Norman Dello Joio and William Flanagan.problems investigated by the student governingbody were the handling of local juveniles whocommit driving infractions; a clean-up cam-paign for certain sections of KinderkamackRoad; traffic problems in the Borough whichindicate the need for lights or stop signs; andthe dangerous railroad crossings in the Bor-ough.

Town Government Day is an annual eventconducted by the River Dell Senior HighSchool Student Council with the cooperationof the Town Councils of River Edge andOradell. After the session, Mayor Karl Chris-tiansen commended the students on the jobthey had done in presenting and discussingthe various problems facing their community.

Twenty-one Inducted IntoFrench Honor SocietyTwenty-one students were inducted into La

Societe Honoraire de Francaise on April 13.Requirements for membership in this branchof the National French Honor Society areextremely high, and schools which do not havean extensive foreign language program wouldautomatically be unable to qualify.

Candidates must be enrolled in a fourthyear of study of the French language and musthave maintained an average of 92% duringall this period of time. In addition, candidatesmust average 80% or better in all their othersubjects during any year of membership. Stu-dent eligibility is subject to review each se-mester, and members who fail to maintain thesequalifications are dropped from the group.

Fifteen of the twenty-one students inductedthis semester are juniors. Mrs. Sylvia Disenhof,senior high school French teacher, is sponsorfor the society.

Administrator AttendsGovernor's ConferenceDr. Wm. Wendell Williams was a delegate

to the Governor's Conference on Educationfor New Jersey called recently by GovernorHughes at Rutgers to consider New Jersey'sproblems in this area.

Among the topics discussed were ways andmeans to improve the level of higher educa-tion in our state and to increase the numberof community colleges, the need for educationalleadership at the state level, the dilemma ofproviding better education for students whoare gifted and for the many who are eco-nomically and culturally disadvantaged, theneed for providing better facilities and train-ing for our trainable and educable children,and the problem of upgrading our teachersand improving elementary and secondary ed-ucation.

Members of the Conference concurred intheir belief that New Jersey lags far behindother states in its support of education, butthey believed that recognition of New Jersey'sproblems by educators and state officials willbring about a rapid advancement of the causeof education in New Jersey within the nearfuture.

Summer Program

General InformationSESSION

The River Dell Regional Summer School willbe held at the River Dell Senior High School atPyle Street, Oradell, from June 27 through July30, Monday through Saturday, with the ex-ception of Monday, July 4. To make up forthis day, school will be in session on Monday,July 11, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for stu-dents enrolled in the first two hours of themorning schedule; and en Monday, July 18,from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for those enrolledin the last two hours. My student taking afour-hour course is expected to be present forboth afternoon sessions.

HOURSClasses will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will con-

clude at 12:15 p.m. Each subject will meetfor one, two or four hours (see schedule), witha five minute break after every hour.

WHO MAY REGISTERCourses given at the River Dell Regional

Summer School will be offered free of tuitioncosts to all secondary students who are resi-dents of River Edge and Oradell.

Students who will complete the 6th gradein June of 1966 are eligible for a limitednumber of courses as set forth in the cur-riculum list in this bulletin.

Twelfth grade students who will graduatefrom high school as of June 1966 are eligiblefor these courses, provided there is space inthe class desired. Final acceptance can begiven only after the registration period ends.All other graduates are not eligible regardlessof age.

Students from other communities may applyfor admission and are subject to the tuitionfees listed in this bulletin. The right is re-served, however, to reject the registration ofout-of-town students after classes have reachedcapacity.

All registrations must be made in person.No mailed registrations will be accepted.

DECISION TO ENROLLIt is important that the decision to enroll in

summer school actually be made by the in-dividual student, after consultation with hisguidance counselor and parents. Because thepace is rapid, past experience leads us to be-lieve that a person attending against his willis not likely to succeed. Students coming fromschools outside of River Dell must present,at the time of registration, written permissionto enroll from the administration of their ownschool.

CLASS SIZEAll courses listed in the curriculum schedule

will be offered, but only those courses whichhave sufficient enrollment will be given. Gen-erally speaking, a class will only be offered ifthere is an enrollment of at least ten persons.

In some instances, rather than eliminate acourse with a low enrollment, two levels ofthe same subject will be grouped together inthe same period and handled individually.

GUIDANCE SERVICESThe River Dell Senior High School Guidance

Office will be open Monday through Friday(8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) during summerschool. Its services will be available to allparochial and public school students residingin River Edge and Oradell.

Content of New`Courses Described

In addition to the review courses listed inthe accompanying curriculum page, severalother courses are listed for those students whowish to undertake their study for the first time.Following is a brief description of *hese "new"courses.

While the following courses are included inthe major subject area, they carry only theamount of credit appropriate to the time de-voted to their study both in class and at home.Thus, a five-credit course will meet for fourhours a day, while those major subjects carry-ing less credit will meet for one or two hoursa day.

History 9(Ancient and Medieval ... 21/2 credits)

An examination of early world civilizationsfrom ancient times to the emergence of nationalstates about 1500 A.D. The heritage of theHebrews, Greeks and Romans will be studied.Early African and Latin American civilizationswill be briefly considered also.

History 10 (World Cultures ... 5 credits)This course will survey four broad cultural

areas. Emphasis will be on the development ofwestern civilization with brief treatment ofthe increasingly important areas of Asia, Africaand Latin America.

History 11 (U.S. History I ...5 credits)Open to students who have completed the

tenth grade, this course will consist of a generalsurvey of historical events from the colonialperiod to the cold war era.

History 12 (U.S. History II ... 5 credits)Students who have completed the eleventh

grade may enroll in this course which willinclude in its contents a study of current prob-lems of the social, economic and politicalworld.

Creative Writing and CompositionImprovement (11/4 credits)

A maximum of fifteen students will beaccepted in this course to allow for dailyteacher-student conferences on individual writ-ing problems. The course will emphasizepractice in writing a variety of literary forms,including poetry.

The following minor subjects are offeredfor students who wish to acquire skills orotherwise widen their educational experiencein elective areas:Art (11/4 credits)

Students of any secondary school tge willbe admitted to this course to work on projectsof individual interest. A wide range of artactivities will be offered, including painting,ceramics, and print-making. All students whosuccessfully complete the course will receivecredit and the opportunity to enter otherelective areas in the winter.

Industrial Arts (1% credits)While many aspects of the industrial arts

field will be examined, emphasis will be placedon individual projects in woodworking. A

A review course, generally speaking, is acourse which a student has already taken inthe winter session and is repeating for any ofseveral reasons. No new credit will be accordedthe student on completion of the summersession, although the grade received will beaccepted 'I correct a deficiency and restorethe credit originally lost through failure.

A major subject, grades 9 through 12, whichhas already been taken by the student andwhich is being repeated for remedial credit,will meet for two hours each day during thesummer session.

Home Economics (11/4 credits)Home economics is designed for those

interested in learning the fundamental prin-ciples of clothing construction and food prepa-ration. Emphasis on either area will be estab-lished at the first session by the preferenceof the group. A small fee will be charged formaterials. Students who successfully completethis course will be given transcript credit andwill be excused from taking it during the reg-ular school, year.

Brief Hand (11/4 credits)This course is resigned primarily to help

students gain speed techniques for note-taking.All work is based on the regular Englishalphabet and phonetic system.

Study Skills (1/2 credit)The study skills course is open to any stu-

dent in grades seven through ten. Since somany students have very poor study habits, itis hoped that all who possibly can will takethis course to improve their school work forthe following year. The course will cover at-titudes and study habits, the strategy of note-taking, and types of examinations.

Personal Typing (11/4 credits)Personal typing is a requirement for all ninth

grade college preparatory students at RiverDell. They may satisfy this requirement bysuccessfully completing this course.

The course is not open to students who havenot completed the eighth grade.

Driver Education (1/2 credit)Driver education will be offered in two

sections, theory and behind-the-wheel. Thirtyclass-hours of theory will be given to satisfyinsurance requirements, while the six hoursof behind-the-wheel training will be scheduledindividually. In order to qualify for behind-the-wheel training, a student must be sixteenand one-half years of age at the time thelessons begin.

"New" Courses MeetFor Longer Hours

A subject which a student is taking for thefirst time (not repeating) is listed in this bul-letin under the section "New Courses."

Because credit for any high school subjectis partially based on a state-required numberof hours spent in classroom study, "new"courses will require a longer class time insummer school than those which a studenthas already taken and is repeating.

A major subject undertaken for the firsttime, which carries five credits during thewinter session, must meet a minimum of 120hours in the summer session in order to qual-ify for the same credit. Such a course (seecurriculum and new course credit lists) willmeet for four hours each day and will alsorequire the student to spend four additionalhours daily in out-of-class preparation.

A minor subject taken for the first time insummer school which receives one-half or one-and-one-quarter credits will require corres-pondingly fewer hours of class time. Suchcourses may be taken by River Dell studentsto satisfy specific minor requirements of theRiver Dell Schools.

New Course CreditNew courses will carry the following credit

for River Dell students. Those who finish thesession with a passing grade will be excusedfrom taking the same course in the regularwinter term and will receive full course credit,

Enriched credit will not be given for U.SHistory I or U.S. History II in the summersession. Enriched credit will also be droppedfrom these courses during the regular wintersession because of the new team-teaching ap-proach which does not lend itself to closegrouping.

Students regularly attending other schoolsare urged to make advanced arrangements forcredit in these courses with the administrationof their own schools.

Reasons To EnrollStudents may enroll for one or more of the

following reasons:1. To make up credits lost during the year.2. To remedy deficiencies or up-grade

marks in courses already taken.3. To enrich their background of edu-

cational experiences by studying elec-tive material for which they might nototherwise have time.

4. To gain flexibility of elective choicein the regular school year by complet-ing one of the curricular requirements.

5. To attain depth in a subject field ofspecial interest in order to proceed tomore advanced work in the regularschool year.

6. To accelerate their studies in order tocomplete graduation requirements in ashorter time.

Course LoadStudents may enroll for one or more courses,

for from one to four hours, according to thetime allocated for the subject or subjectsselected.

AttendanceSummer school courses move through a

great deal of subject matter in a relativelyshort time. This being the case, any studentwho has attended a class fewer than 25 dayswill not be eligible to enter the final exam-ination. This requirement is necessary in orderto uphold reasonable accreditation standards.It will apply regardless of the reason forabsence, even though a student has made aneffort to make up the work missed. Underthese circumstances, a person may either re-main in the course as an auditor or withdrawif he wishes to do so. In neither case willtuition be refunded because of inability tomeet attendance requirements.

Conduct and DressAll students are asked to comply with the

same general rules of conduct as apply withinthe River Dell Schools at other times of theyear. Attire may be informal and comfortable,but should be in keeping with prevailing stand-ards for school dress. Shorts or slacks are notpermitted for girls; shorts or dungarees arenot permitted for boys.

able direction of faculty member CharlesBakunas, continue to take top honors in statecompetitions. Lawrence Ho 1pp, a senior, placedfirst in Dramatic Interpretation at the recentDistrict Tournament held at Morris HillsRegional High Sch ol, Rockaway, New Jersey,with his reading : "The Scarlet Ibis" byJames Hurst. River Dell won another victorywhen Thomas Griffin, a junior, captured firstplace in the category of Oratorical Interpre-tation at the same event with his presentationof Roger Casement's speech from the dock onhis right to be tried by a jury of his peers.

Coming in second in the Dramatic Interpre-tation event, Linda Smith presented excerptsfrom Member of the Wedding. She also placedsecond and brought home the trophy forHumorous Interpretation with her reading ofStephen Leacock's "Softening the Stories forChildren." The League permits a school tokeep a trophy if it wins any of the first threeplaces two years in a row, and Linda alsowon the second place award last year.

The three winners and Mr. Bakunas werehonored by Senator Ned Parsekian and Gov-ernor Hughes at a brief ceremony in Trentonon April 4.

The Forensic Club sponsored a poetrytournament at the River Dell Senior High,school on May 12 to which more than adozen Bergen County schools sent represent-atives, judges and student competitors. Winnersin the event will be eligible for district com-petition at a later date.

Ninth Annual LatinBanquet Is Held

"Ego vexilla Unitorum Statuum Americae"intoned the 80 students of Latin at the RiverDell Senior High School, as they prepared tosit down to dinner. The occasion was theninth annual Latin Banquet held on May 5in the senior high school cafeteria, and theflag salute, like all other events of theevening, was conducted in Latin.

All participants were garbed in togas, chitons,sandals and other appropriate Roman garb,and their menu for the evening includedfructus, ante panto, spaghetti, panis, vinumfalsum, and frigida spuma lactis, which somemay recognize as spaghetti, fruit, bread,grape juice, and ice cream.

While dining, students were entertained witha series of acrobatic exhibitions and sketches,all presented in Latin and given by studentsin the advanced classes. The title of onesketch, translated into English, was "ThePersecution and Assassination of Julius Caesar"s Enacted by the Inmates of Latin III."

The entire group joined in singing "CumSancti Ingrediantur," which sounds just like"When the Saints Go Marching In."

Fourth year Latin classes made the arrange-ments for the program which was under thefaculty supervision of Miss Mabel Forster.

Superintendent DelegateTo National Conference

Dr. Wm. Wendell Williams, superintendentof the River Dell Schools, recently attended anational conference sponsored by the U.S.Office of Education at the University of Ill-inois on the Role of Demonstration Centersin Educational Change. Dr. Williams repre-sented the State of New Jersey as its principaldelegate.

Called for the purpose of showing what canbe done through supplementary centers of ed-ucation, the possibilities and limitations ofsuch projects were presented and discussedby members of the U.S. Office of Education,officials from the State Department of Edu-cation, and professors from various collegesthroughout the country.

The State of Illinois has nineteen suchcenter presently in operation, and participantsat the conference had an opportunity to meetwith staff members of these centers and tolearn at first hand how they are operated tobest advantage.

German Students ScoreFive River Dell students have won gold,

silver and bronze medals in a nation-widecontest for high school students sponsored bythe American Association of Teachers ofGerman. They are Margrit Vogeler, goldmedal; Ellen Weiss and Barbara Schumann,silver medals; and William Anthony and AlanKudish, bronze medals.

The examinations were held at differentcolleges throughout the country in March. Thecontest is sponsored by the American Asso-ciation of 'reachers of German and the Ger-man Litera Society of America.

Twelve Students AttendF.D. U. Computer Course

Twelve River Dell students have been at-tending an experimental course on the analogcomputer which has been presented at theTeaneck campus of Fairleigh Dickinson Uni-versity every Friday afternoon from 3:30 to5:50 p.m. The students are John Combs,Leigh Decker, Frank Eisenberg, Alan Hartman,Mark Laichtman, Ray Lane, Bernard Maron,Lynne Pregenza, John Schafer, Edgar Rappa-port, Warren Yohe and Lela Warren.

The course, sponsored by the National Sci-ence Foundation, is designed to offer an op-portunity for capable high school students totest the depth of their early interest in thisfield by exploring the academic field of en-gineering.

Employment Offered ToBusiness Course GraduatesStudents who have gone through River Dell's

four-year commercial program of studies nor-mally go directly into jobs or find employmentvery shortly after graduation. This year, Burnsand Roe, an engineering firm which plans toopen offices in Oradell next fall, has alreadyoffered employment to approximately half ofthe seniors who will graduate from the Busi-ness Education Department this June. Thegirls were interviewed and tested by repre-sentatives from the firm who came to theschool and worked closely with Mrs. ClaireHothem, chairman of the Business EducationDepartment, during this screening period.

The young graduates will perform a num-ber of services in their new employment,including typing, stenography, and the oper-ation of business machines.

New Course ProposedFor Business Department

Pending approval of an application for statefunds, a new course in Office Occupations willbe offered next year within the Business Ed-ucation Department. The funds, if granted,will permit the rental of keypunch and steno-lab machines which are needed to implementthe course.

The new course will enable River Dell toincorporate a work-experience program intothe commercial curriculum in cooperationwith local business concerns. This programwould operate on a half-day schedule similarto River Dell's current and highly successfulDistributive Education program.

Foods Class GainsPractical Experience

Students in the foods classes at the seniorhigh school have found a novel way to testtheir culinary skills and at the same timeacquire valuable experience in menu planningand food preparation. During the entire springsemester, they have conducted weekly lunch-eons for selected faculty members who signedup for the privilege after consulting the exoticmenu posted in the faculty lounge.

Foreign foods have been the order of theday, and menus have been constructed aroundthe specialty dishes of Spain, France, Germany,Italy, India, Sweden, Greece, and Mexico,among others. The students prepared all thedishes, arranged the table settings, and servedthe luncheons themselves. Enthusiasm amongthe young culinary experts, who include bothboys and girls, has been stimulated by thegenuine admiration and praise of the facultymember; l who have enjoyed the fruits of theirlabor'

Congressman HelstoskiSpeaks At Junior High

Congresssman Henry Helstoski, member ofthe House of Representatives from New Jersey'sNinth Congressional District, will speak beforean assembly at the River Dell Junior HighSchool on Friday, May 27.

Mr. Helstoski, who toured portions of bothAfrica and the Far East last year, will givestudents his first-hand impressions of thesetroubled areas.

Since Vietnam was included among theareas he visited in the Far East, students willbe particularly interested to see the slides hehas brought back showing the cities, country-side and natives of this beleaguered land.

Summer Music School ToBegin On June 27

The River Dell Summer Music School, auindependent, tuition-charging school, will holdits classes in the River Dell Senior High Schoolmusic rooms and auditorium again this summer.Any student in grade four through twelve whois interested in taking instrumental lessons andwants the opportunity to play with a group,is eligible for the Summer Music School.

Classes will begin on Monday, June 27, andwill meet five days a week until Friday, July29. No Saturday classes will be held. Registra-tion will be accepted at the senior high school'smusic room on Saturday, May 21, from 9:00a.m. until noon; and on Thursday and Friday,May 26 and 27, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

A tuition fee of $20.00 will be charged forlessons on one instrument. If the student wishesto study a second instrument, an additionaltuition fee of $12.50 will be charged. For stu-dents who do not have their own instruments,a rental program will be available.

The summer session will give beginners andexperienced students daily class lessons onband and orchestra instruments, including thepiano. In addition, there will be daily bandand orchestra rehearsals. Several activities havebeen planned, which include a field trip toNew York City to hear the Goldman Band,a field day, and a concert to be presented bythe students for the public. Mr. RaymondWesterdale will be the director of the SummerMusic School.

Driver EducationProgram Intensified

Concern for the increasing accident rateamong automobile drivers in the teen-agecatagory has led the River Dell Senior HighSchool to intensify its driver education pro-gram. In addition to the regular classroominstruction and behind-the-wheel training, stu-dents have attended three assembly programsplanned to give them a clear understanding ofthe dangers of the road and a realization oftheir legal responsibilities as drivers.

A film, "The Road Back," was shown inMarch through the courtesy of Police ChiefCrandall of River Edge. Sergeant Horstmannintroduced the film, which tells the true storyof a young boy terribly injured in an auto-mobile accident, narrated by the victim himself.

"Signal 30," the famous film on traffic ac-cident causes circulated by the New JerseyState Police, was shown in April. A trooperfrom the force presented the film and con-ducted a question-and-answer period at itsconclusion.

On April 16, Magistrate Julius Malkin ad-dressed members of the junior class on theirapproaching entry into adulthood. He out-lined the legal and moral responsibilities whichanyone assumes the minute he gets behindthe wheel of a car. He also briefly reviewedtraffic laws in this state.

All juniors who have completed the class-room phase of driver education will take theNew Jersey Driver Education examinationwhich will be administered by state officialsat River Dell on June 3.

Guidance Counselors Tol/LF.S. Selects Junior ToHave New Assignments Spend Summer In Austria

A realignment of the students assigned toeach counselor in the senior high school willbe necessary next year when Mr. RaymondTitus, currently in the junior high school, isadded to the senior high school guidance staff.The presence of an additional counselor inthe senior high school will reduce eachcounselor's pupil load and should contributeto the amount of time each counselor has tospend with individual students.

In order to give continuity over a period oftime to the counselors' acquaintance with stu-dent problems, each counselor will be assigneda portion of the students in each grade, re-gardless of curricular pattern. He will retainthese students until they graduate.

Beginning next year, students in grades ten,eleven and twelve whose names fall withinthe following alphabe..eal groups will be as-signed to the counselor indicated.

Teacher Association on May 10 presented anovel program on factors governing collegeadmissions. Parents received new insight intothis growing problem when they were askedto consider the difficulties confronting collegeadmissions committees in their nearly im-possible task.

Mr. Robert P. Biunno, Director of Admis-sions at Rutgers-Newark, conducted the work-shop. He presented to the audience the com-plete details of several actual student appli-cations received by his office, withholding onlythe students' names and the decision reachedby the admissions office on each application.Groups of parents, acting in the capacity ofan admissions committee. considered all thefactors involved and made a recommendationon each application. Mr. Biunno then revealedthe actual decisions made and explained theprocess by which each was reached.

The program was arranged by Mr. FrankBrunetto, director of Educational Services atRiver Dell.

to a fitting close on June 3 with the cele-bration of that great American folk event,the senior prom, to be held at the Bow andArrow in East Orange.

The following week is devoted to quiet andsober review in preparation for the seniorexaminations which begin on June 10, a weekearlier than those for the rest of the students.After exams, nothing but graduation rehearsals,the senior picnic and the final ceremoniesthemselves separate these young men andwomen from the sobering experiences of adult-hood.

Cathleen Muehleck, daughter of Mr. CasparMuehleck of 640 Lotus Avenue, Oradell, hasbeen notified by the American Field ServiceHeadquarters in New York that she will spendthe summer abroad near the town of Deutsch-feistritz in Austria. Cathleen will be the guestof Mr. and Mrs. Johann Hormann and theirfamily who live on a farm two miles fromthe village and approximately 20 miles fromGraz, capital of the province of Styria. TheHormann family has two sons and a daughterin their early twenties, and a second daughterdescribed as a "jolly school-girl," who is elevenyears old. The farm has three stables, andCathleen, who enjoys horseback riding, islooking forward to a summer devoted to farm-ing, riding and hiking.

In addition to their daily chores on thefarm, the young people in the family listfolk-singing, table tennis, hunting, swimming,and "jazz music" as among their daily activitiesand interests.

The town of Deutschfeistritz, which has3,500 inhabitants, is located on the Mur Riverin semi-mountainous country. Neighboringzinc and lead mines contribute employmentto townsfolk, while the beauty of the country-side has made the area a favorite summerresort.

Cathleen will spend the months of Julyand August abroad and wal return in Septem-ber for her senior year in high school atRiver Dell. She is the seventh River Dell stu-dent to be sent abroad under American FieldService auspices.

Two Teachers GrantedSabbatical Leave

Two of River Dell's best-known teacherswill take a well-earned sabbatical leave nextyear, but in each case rest or relaxation willnot be the goal.

Mr. Jordan Richin, science teacher in thejunior high school, will attend the Universityof Houston in Texas working toward a doc-toral degree in the field of earth science.Mr. Richin has received a National ScienceFoundation grant for this work. He has beeninvolved with the pilot program in the teach-ing of earth sciences at the secondary leveldeveloped by the National Earth Science Cur-riculum Project and introduced experimentallyinto selected schools throughout the nation.River Dell, one of the selected schools, hasused these new materials very successfully andhas extended their use to a majority of theninth grade classes.

Mr. Charles Aquino, a member of the Busi-ness Education Department in the junior highschool, will attend Syracuse University nextyear to study educational media. Mr. Aquinois the audio-visual director in the junior highschool, and his studies will give him furthercompetence in this field.

Both teachers on sabbatical leave next yearwill return to River Dell the following year.

Acquisition of materials such as books,slides, records, tapes and projectors neededto back the program is provided for in thegrant. These materials will be made availablefor consultation by parochial school studentsand staff members and by interested membersof the community at such time in the futureas they are ready for use.

Preliminary negotiations between Dr. Wil-liams, Mr. Petroccione and officials in Wash-ington will be held within the next two weeksto establish procedures and administrativedetails under which the grant will operate. Workon the project is authorized to begin by June1, 1966.

to help defray costs attendant to senior ac-tivities. Each year members of the senior classwork hard to raise enough money to bringdown the cost of such standard senior itemsof expense as prom tickets, yearbooks, thesenior picnic and the class gift. The othermajor fund drive conducted by the class is the,magazine drive held in October. The Class of1966 had the most successful magazine drive inthe history of the school netting $5,100 fromtheir concentrated efforts.

Christmas Concert ToFeature Choral Works

Two major works of considerable difficultywill be featured this year at the River DellMusic Department's Christmas Concert to bepresented on Wednesday, December 21, at8:15 p,m. in the senior high school auditorium.River Dell's hundred-member chorus, underthe direction of Dr. Richard A. Barrows, chair-man of the Music Department, will performthe Christmas cantata, A Ceremony of Carols,written by contemporary composer BenjaminBritten. The group will also present a forty-fiveminute master work of the early GermanBaroque school of music, The Christmas Story,which was written by Heinrich Schutz in 1664.

The Britten work, a contemporary classicwhich will take approximately twenty-fiveminutes to perform, is a suite of modern-ettings of traditional Latin and British texts.

eferendum On School ExpansionProposal Set For December 20

A referendum for expansion of the facilitiesat the River Dell Junior and Senior HighSchools will be submitted to the voters forapproval on December 20. The proposal rep-resents the culmination of nine months ofstudy by the Board of Education concerningthe educational needs of students in the RiverDell community. After considering all possiblealternatives, members of the Board are unani-mous in their belief that the kind of educa-tional opportunity which the River Dell com-munity wants and expects for its young peo-ple cannot be satisfactorily maintained withinthe limitations of the present plant.

Chief among the factors which have ledthe Board to this conclusion is the continuinghigh enrollment at the junior high school. Asecond determining factor is the inadequacyof the plant to cope with nation-wide changesin curriculum and teaching methodology. Al-though every effort has been made for thepast two years to meet these problems withmeasures short of expansion, the Board nowacknowledges that the many problems canonly be solved by the construction of additionalfacilities.

The referendum to be presented to the publicon December 20 contains the following pro-posals:

The cost of constructing these facilities willbe $656,000, according to estimates preparedby Mr. Peter Terrafranca, architect for theexpansion program.

The amount to be raised by a bond issue,however, is $590,000. Costs have been reducedby the transfer of $21110 in state funds(which are given to Rivei ?1,1 out of salestax revenues) from the Cur. -.` Expense ac-count to the Capital Outlay account; by theapplication of $22,000 awarded to River Dellunder the Title III ESEA Humanities grant forneeded alterations; and by use of $23,000surplus in the Capital Outlay account.

Enrollment at the junior high school has notdeclined as was expected from projections madethree years ago. The overcrowded conditionswhich existed at the time of the State De-partment of Education's evaluation in March,1964, were then thought to be temporary.

Not only has the enrollment not fallen tothe expected low, however, but current pro-jections indicate that it actually will rise bya significant number within the next few years,and will not taper off below present numberswithin the forseeable future. The overcrowdingat the junior high school has created a num-ber of conditions which, while they mightbe endured for a year or two, are intolerableas a long-range situation.

The State Department of Education informedthe River Dell Board of Education in 1964that something must be done to relieve theovercrowded conditions. Since enrollment ap-parently is not going to drop and thereby

solve most of the problems extant, no otheracceptable alternative presents itself than toprovide more room for the number of stu-dents who must be cared for.

The addition of classroom space and therelocation of the library in the junior highschool will restore the teaching of academicsubjects to classrooms designed for this purpose.At the present time students are quartered inthe cafeterias, mechanical drawing room, bandroom and library for the study of such academicsubjects as English and foreign language. Thereare no rooms at all available for the teachingof remedial reading and speech. These subjectsare being taught in storage areas. Music classeshave been forced out of their own rooms andnow meet in groups of 120 students in theauditorium; the stage is simultaneously beingused as a classroom for instrumental instruc-tion. The library, planned for a much smallerstudent body, is too small to accommodateboth classes and independent students. Further,in an effort to adapt its facilities to currentmethods, the library has had to devote floorspace in the reading room to audio-visualequipment which cannot be placed anywhereelse for lack of room.

The proposed additions will make it possibleto consolidate all guidance personnel in onearea. At the present time members of thepsychological team are quartered in widelyscattered areas without access to centrally heldstudent records.

The addition of classroom space will alsopermit River Dell to assume its proper re-sponsibility to the County for providing aroom in which our share of Region V's ed-ucable and trainable students may be caredfor. River Dell is the only member schoolin Region V which does not provide thesefacilities while taking advantage of the facilitiesprovided by other member schools.

The major portion of the $590,000 to beraised through the bond issue will be usedfor the junior high school expansion.

At the senior high school, the major ex-pansion proposed is the expansion of the li-brary. Other areas to be expanded at relative-ly minor cost are the little theater and businessoffice, and a relocation of the nurse's officeis planned so as to provide additional space

for guidance.The senior high school library was construct-

ed ten years ago for a student body of 847.It was too small for the actual enrollmentalmost from the beginning. The seating ca-pacity of 64 seats, which is totally inadequatefor a school of 1,154 students, has beendiminished to 54 seats by the necessary ad-dition of book stacks to house the growingcollection.

Changes in the curriculum at the seniorhigh 5chool, reflecting changing needs in theeducational preparation of students for thiscompetitive world, have placed an excessivestrain on the room's already cramped quarters.The needs of team teaching tend to pre-emptthe room for classes, since the library is toosmall to accommodate both a class and in-dependent workers at the same time. Thereare no conference rooms. There is no listeningor viewing area where students can make useof the large record, tape, filmstrip and slidecollections. There is no convenient area forthe storage of audio-visual equipment andmachines which are part of an up-to-date li-brary's holdings.

The Board of Education plans to enlargethe present library by pushing out the existingeast wall and building an additional arealarge enough to divide into the required sec-tions. The total library complex proposedwould have enough space to house the bookcollections, an audio-visual listening and view-ing area, a conference room, enough seatingcapacity to care for a class as well as studentsengaged in independent study, and adequatestorage areas for machines and magazines.

The expansion of the little theater is pro-posed because there is need for another areain the building in addition to the auditoriumwhere a large group of students can be ac-commodated. Team teaching at River Dell al-ready has more large-group classes scheduledinto the auditorium than there are periods inthe day. Large group instruction is being usedin the history 1 1 th and 12th grade classesand in the 12th grade humanities course. Nextyear the method will be extended to includethe new history course in world cultures re-quired for all sophomores. Thus all studentsin the entire senior high school will be sched-

Veit Appointed SeniorHigh Vice-Principal

Richard A. Veit has been appointed vice-principal of the River Dell Senior High School.He fills the vacancy created when formervice-principal George Iannacone resigned lastmonth to accept a position as principal of thnew senior high school being constructed forPalisades Park.

Mr. Veit came to River Dell as a guidancecounselor in 1962. He worked for two yearswith junior high school students and thenwas transferred to the senior high school wherehe has counselled both terminal and collegepreparatory students. Prior to entering theguidance field, Mr. Veit taught history andsocial studies at the Freemont Senior HighSchool in Freemont, Ohio. Last summer, Mr.Veit served as principal of the River DellSummer School, which had a staff of 36teachers and more than 800 students.

Mr. Veit, a native of Ohio, received bothhis B.A. and M.A. degrees from BowlingGreen State College where he studied politicalscience and administration. Since coming tothe East, he has taken an additional 32 creditsat Seton Hail, Montclair State College andthe City College of New York in the fields ofguidance and education.

Mr. Veit lives in Washington Township withhis wife and four children.

Library Expansion WillSolve Space ProblemsChanges in teaching methods and new cur-

ricular ideas are having a tremendous impacton the libraries at the River Dell Junior andSenior High Schools. New emphasis on f n-

dependent study and the needs of team teachinghave placed a strain on the seating capacity inea,.. library. In addition, the English Depart-ment's efforts to bring every English class intothe library at least once every two weeksnecessitates the closing of this facility to studyhall students whenever a class is in the library,since neither school has a reading room largeenough to accommodate both a class andindependent users at the same time.

Further demands on the limited spaceavailable in each library are created by thenew use of audio-visual aids in both schools.Students now make extensive use of tapedmaterials, records, filmstrips and slides, allof which are kept in the library. Space andspecial facilities for the use of these materialsare either missing or inadequate in bothschools. There is no viewing or listening roomin either school, and students at the seniorhigh school are currently listening to recordsand tapes in the magazine storage room wherethey are constantly interrupted.

At the senior high nhool there is no con-ference room in which students may work to-gether without disturbit.g others. Seating space,(54 seats) is totally inadequate for a school

room of standing book shelves needed to ac-commodate the growing collection. Additionalpressure will be felt when space must be foundfor the $15,000 worth of materials which willbe purchased this year with Title III fundsto form the nucleus of the new humanitieslibrary.

The River Dell Board of Education believesthat expansion of the library services in bothschools is essential to the curriculum andtherefore essential to the education of RiverDell's students. These services cannot be im-proved without an expansion of the physicalarea in which each library is located. This willinvolve a relocation of the junior high schoollibrary since it is impossible to expand itspresent situation without absorbing classroomspace and creating an area which would bedifficult to supervise. At the senior high school,expansion is easily accomplished by adding anarea to the east of the present library.

Team Teaching Strains Existing FacilitiesOne of the major changes in teaching

methodology and curricular philosophy whichhas taken place in the United States withinthe past five years is the institution of teamteaching in the nation's schools. This newmethodology places a great strain on schoolbuildings which are not specifically designed toaccommodate its needs, and the River Dellplant, particularly at the senior high school,is no exception.

Team teaching is designed to make the mostadvantageous use of the particular excellencesof several teachers, and at the same timerequires from the student a greater amount ofindependent study than he has formerly beenexpected to perform.

In team teaching, students studying aparticular subject are given the advantage ofhearing the viewpoints of the various instructorswho teach this subject, not just one. At reg-ular intervals, often several times a week, classesare brought together in large groups of 90to 120 students to hear a lecture presented byone of the team of teachers. An advantageto this system is that all kinds of visual aidscan be used to enrich and illuminate a topic,and the cooperative planning on the part ofthe teachers lends depth to the lesson whichcould rarely be attained otherwise.

Because large-group sessions are attendedby students of all ability levels, individualdifferences must be met through the secondand equally vital phase of team-teachingmethodology, that is, through independentstudy. Since independent study requires theextensive use of reference materials, studentsmust have ready access to a larger librarythan presently exists at the River Dell SeniorHigh School.

Last yt..-, team teaching was introduced intoall the history classes in the junior year. The354 juniors met in the auditorium in groupsof approximately 120, and on individual classdays Dften met in the library which then hadto be closed to other students. The little theater,which was originally planned to accommodate

approximately 100 persons, is inadequate forthe new program.

This year, team teaching has been extendedto include all classes in American History II,which is a state requirement for the entiresenior class. In addition, the new Humanitiescourse is using a team teaching approach, andmust use the auditorium for its 140 studentsin competition with the history program.

At the present time, the auditorium has moreclasses scheduled into it than there are periodsin the day, a paradox which is being metthrough the careful coordination of lecturesamong the various teams of teachers.

A crisis will arise next year when teamteaching will be extended to encompass theentire senior high school population throughthe history curriculum. A new course inWorld Cultures is now being developed andwill be required for all sophomores next year.Unless the facilities of the little theater areexpanded to seat these new large groups, theprogram cannot be offered as planned.

Team teaching is undoubtedly here to stay.This year across the country three out of tenteachers are engaged in one form or anotherof team teaching. The River Dell staff believesthat student experiences with large-group pres-entations and note-taking will certainly assistthem in moving from their high school pro-gram to the college lecture hall. In addition,the use of materials other than the text bookand the acquisition of independent study habitswill aid them greatly in the development ofcritical thinking.

At River Dell, the use of the auditorium hasbeen a necessary though imperfect measure,because a properly equipped large group roomhas not been available. The addition of seatingcapacity to the little theater and the refurnish-ing of this room with tablet-arm chairs tofacilitate writing is a necessary measure ifthe curriculum is to progress in desirabledirections. The cost of these minor alterationsis estimated at less than one twelfth of thetotal referendum cost.

Paul Collins JoinsGuidance DepartmentPaul A. Collins, who has been a member of

the River Dell History Department for thepast year, has been appointed to a newposition as guidance counselor at the seniorhigh school. His appointment fills the positionformerly occupied by River Dell's new vice-principal, Richard Veit.

Mr. Collins is a graduate of Seton HallUniversity and has a Master's degree in thefield of guidance from the same institution.He began his teaching career at Holy FamilyHigh School in Union City where he taughtAmerican history and coached the baseballteam.

Mr. Collins, who is married and father ofone child, has also acted for three summersas head of a day camp for children betweenthe ages of nine and sixteen. River Dell isfortunate to have had ready on its staff aperson so highly qualified to fill a positionas vital to the welfare of students as is thepost of guidance counselor.

Program Of StudiesBooklet Revised

The Program of Studies booklet preparedby the Guidance Department two years agohas been completely revised and up-dated toreflect changes recently made in the curriculum.The booklet will contain a complete descriptionof each curricular pattern in the school aswell as course descriptions for all electives ingrades nine through twelve.

The pamphlet will be issued in Februaryall students in grades eight, nine, ten andeleven, and should be brought by each stu-dent to his annual interview with his guidancecounselor.

Parents are encouraged to study the bookletwith their child when determining the studiesto be selected for the coming year.

These girls will once againcarol throughout the River Edge and Oradellcommunities for the benefit of the AmericanCancer Society. They hope they will be ablethis year to exceed the $25 which they col-lected for the Society as a result of theircaroling activities last year.

Four Named Semi-Finalists

In Merit CompetitionFour River Dell seniors have been named

semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarshipcompetition as a result of their scores on theNational Merit Scholarship Qualifying Testadministered to nearly a million students in theUnited States last March. These four students,Linda Barzelay, Eric Glanbard, Joel Haycockand Diane Kilgore, are among the 14,000 semi-finalists in the nation.

In addition, twenty one seniors have re-ceived Letters of Commendation from theNational Merit Corporation. They are: EliotAlazraki, Victoria Bessinger, Alan Braverman,David Brown, John Clark, Steven Cross, LoisDinsmore, Marga Dusedau, Peter Greene, AlanGreenglass, Alan Hartman, Janet Hayes,Brian Kendregan, Kenneth Kroohs, RobertLa Rue, Anne Scully, Janet Shenk, JanetStirling, Richard Vierling, Lela Warren, andEllen Weiss.

The semi-finalists, together with the com-mended students, rank scholastically amongthe upper two percent of those who will grad-uate from high school in 1967.

The semi-finalists now face a further qualify-ing test in December when they must take thethree-hour Scholastic Aptitude Test of theCollege Entrance Examination Board.

Students who repeat or improve their scoreson this second test will become eligible forscholarship awards ranging from $100 up t$1,500 per year. The actual award of a scholarship is based on scholastic ability and citizen-ship. The amount of the scholarship is basedon need.

Students who receive Letters of Commenda-tion rank just below the semi-inalists. Theirnames are reported to other scholarship-grant-ing agencies and to the colleges to which theyare applying for admission.

By relocating the nurse's officeacross the hall in the old library office, theguidance facilities can be expanded into thepresent nurse's quarters and adequate spacefound for its function.

The addition fo the business office can beaccomplished at a minimum cost when thelittle theater is expanded. Additional space isneeded for this area because the volume ofwork in this office has nearly doubled in thelast five years. Financial records for stateand federal funds, for the cafeteria, the athleticdepartment, and the school's regular operationare accumulating and require additional storagespace. The business manager shares office spacewith two other persons and lacks the necessarprivacy to perform his work. The Board ofEducation therefore proposes to add fifteenfeet of space to the present business quartersthus creating a separate office for the businessmanager and adequate storage facilities for theaccumulating records.

Care Of Special StudentsIs Local ResponsibilityWhile the majority of students in a com-

munity report to the public schools for reg-ular classroom instruction, there are alwaysa number of youngsters in any communitywho, for a variety of reasons, require spec-ialized classes or individual handling to meettheir particular needs. It is the responsibilityof a Board of Education to provide edu-cational opportunity for every child in thecommunity who is able to benefit from form-alized instruction of any kind.

In order to make sensible local arrange-ments for the unique care of these youngsters,communities in the county have been groupedinto regions. Each region contains severalschools which band together to establish spe-cialized classes for the trainable and educablestudents within their districts. Such specialclasses are housed within the public schoolbuildings and are taught by specially trainedinstructors.

Rier Dell is a member of Region V, whichalso includes the Teaneck, New Milford,Hackensack, Bergenfield, Dumont, River Edgeand Oradell school systems. Of all theseschools, River Dell is the only secondaryschool which does not provide facilities for atrainable or educable class.

Over the years, the River Dell Board ofEducation has sent from twelve to twenty train-able, educable or other special students peryear to classes provided in other communities.Unless: some provision is made within thenext year or two to establish a similar facilityat River Dell, Region V superintendents havestated that they will no longer assume re-sponsibility for the placement of our students.

In order to carry River Dell's fair shareof the Region V responsibility and thus avoidexpulsion of our students from Region Vclasses. it is imperative that River Dell pro-vide space for a trainable or educable classwithin its plant. Such a room is included inthe proposed junior high school expansionprogram.

River Bell StudentsScare On "lts Academic"River Dell was the victor in its second

appearance on "It's Academic," the competitivequiz program on which students from out-standing high schools in the metropolitan areamatch wits and information.

Competing against the Locust Valley HighSchool from Long Island and the MountVernon High School from Westchester, theRiver Dell team held its own in a fast-movingsession which remained tense to the last fewminutes. River Dell's team members EricGlanbard, Joel Haycock and Peter Greenecarried the day, however, and the video tapeof their accomplishment was telecast overChannel 4 at 7:00 p.m. on November 19.

River Dell's winning team was asked toreturn to the program for a play-off matchagainst two other winning schools on Saturday,November 12. The tape made of this encounterwill be seen on the broadcast tentatively setfor December 10.

The River Dell Humanities Center, which issupported by a Title III ESEA federal grant,is offering a series of twelve lectures on "Artin the Modern World" to teachers in BergenCounty public and parochial schools andinterested members of the River Dell com-munity. The lectures, presented Monday after-noons at 4:00 p.m. in the senior high schoolauditorium, have been organized in cooper-ation with Mr. Thomas Folds, Dean of Ed-ucation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art,and several members of the MetropolitanMuseum's staff. More than 400 persons arecurrently registered for the course, and anumber of citizens and students who are notregistered are regularly attending.

The lectures, which cover the history ofwestern art from the early Renaissance to thepresent day, are being presented by the follow-ing outstanding authorities in the art world:

The primary purpose of this program is toprovide opportunity for teachers in humanitiesfields-history, foreign language, English, musicand art-to refresh their knowledge of thecreative arts so that they may bring addedinsight to their teaching. Because of thecourse's tremendous value, however, RiverDell extends a cordial invitation to ad inter-ested citizens in the community who are ableto attend at this hour to take advantage ofthis opportunity.

Additional Office SpaceNeeded For GuidanceMinor remodeling of existing facilities is

proposed at both the junior and senior highschools to correct some of the inadequaciesof the guidance facilities in each building.

At the junior high school, guidance quartersare so small that there is no place providedfor individual testing, students wait for inter-views in a passage-way shared by the vice-principal's secretary, and there is no adequatespace for the storage of vital school records.At the present time the school psychologist islocated in another part of the school altogether,without ready access to student records, andthe social worker is working in a closet.

The same problems which exist at the jun-ior high school are also visible at the seniorhigh school. The lack of office space has forcedthe school psychologist to meet students in thephotography room and the magazine storageroom.

Our social worker is quartered in the photog-raphy room which must h. entered from therear of a classroom. The new guidance counseloremployed this year is forced to use a formerstorage closet for his office, and stored recordshave taken space from the nurse's quarters.

The Board proposes to relieve these con-ditions by expanding into adjacent rooms inboth schools. At the junior high school,neighboring Room 116 will simply be dividedinto the necessary areas and absorbed intothe guidance suite. At the senior high school,the guidance suite will absorb the adjacentnurse's quarters, and the nurse will be re-located across the hall in a corner of thepresent library's storage area. Costs of theseminor alterations are minimal in the totalexpansion program.

River Dell Has Two A.F.S.Students This Year

For the first time in its history, River Dellhas two foreign American Field Service stu-dents enrolled as seniors at the school.

Miss Joelle Bussiere, an eighteen year oldnative of France, arrived in August to spendthe year as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. RoySamuels of 24 Stuart Place, Oradell. As aresult of last year's successful fund drives,however, the River Dell American Field ServiceChapter was able also to bring Mario Bar-rientos, a native of Argentina, to River Dellfor this school year. Mario is spending thewinter with the family of Mr. and Mrs. JamesBroderick of 189 Woodland Avenue, RiverEdge.

Rae comes from the city of Martigues inthe southern part of France near the port ofMarsailles. She attended the Lycee there andreceived her diploma in June 1966. Joe lle,whose family consists of her parents and anolder brother, lists swimming, riding, skiingand table tennis as her favorite sports, andstates that she wishes to become an Englishteacher when she finishes her education. Jolenewill enter the University on her return toFrance from River Dell next June.

Mario Barrientos comes from the city ofSan Miguel de Tucuman, which has a popu-lation of 300,000 and is situated in the southcentral portion of Argentina. His father is amember of the state legislature, and he him-self is headed for a career in law and diplo-macy. Mario, who is eighteen years of age,completed high school last year and was en-rolled at the university when notificationfinally arrived of his acceptance as an A.F.S.student. He says he had no hesitancy aboutbreaking into his studies to take advantageof this unique opportunity.

At River Dell, Mario, who played soccerat his own school in Argentina, immediatelybecame a valued member of the soccer team.He claims swimming as his favorite sport,however.

The length of the school day comes as ashock to Lhis 5'9" young athlete. He is ac-customed to attending classes from 7:30 a.m.until 1:00 p.m., and having the rest of theday to study, work or play at his own dis-

Title 1 Funds RenewedBy Federal GovernmentA reapplication for federal funds under Title.

I of the Elementary and Secondary EducationAct has resulted in the renewal of River Dell'sTitle I grant for the support of additionalprograms in remedial reading, language de-velopment and guidance services. The sum of$15,153 has been awarded for the 1966-1967fiscal year to continue programs establishedlast year in these areas. Last year's grantamounted to $17,843, and provided for thepurchase of machines and the hiring of ad-ditional teachers whose services were alsomade available to students in local parochialschools.

Under Title II of ESEA, financial aid in theamount of $3,278 was awarded to the RiverDell Schools for the purchase of library ma-terials. A second application for a similaramount will be made this spring to coverfiscal year 1967-68.

The federal grant awarded to River Dellthis June under Title III of the Elementaryand Secondary Education _ tct is for the supportof a program for the promotion of the Hu-manities in the River Dell school and com-munity. The grant, in the amount of $110,000,provides for the hiring of personnel and theacquisition of teaching materials, audio-visualequipment and other supplies needed to pre-sent the new Humanities course instituted thisyear. It also provides for the acquisition of$15,000 worth of library materials to be as-sembled as a special Humanities library andmade available to non-public school personneland interested members of the community.

The Humanities course is open to privateschool students, and six students from BergenCatholic High School are in regular attendance.A portion of the grant, $22,000, is specificallyallocated to costs for the remodeling of anyfacilities which might need alteration in thebest interests of the program.

The Humanities project is planned for de-velopment over a three-year period, but con-tinuation of the grant is based on an annualapplication for support from the government.Reapplication for River Dell's Title III grantwill be made in April 1967. Dr. Charles R.Keller, director of the Ford Foundation's Join.'Hay Fellows Program, will visit the RiverDell Schools on March 16 to evaluate theprogram.

The decision to bring two A.F.S. studentsto River Dell instead of one this year totallydepleted the treasury, according to Mrs. Wil-liam Light, chapter president. Fund-raisingdrives will be undertaken throughout the year,and the current fruit cake sale conducted bythe River Dell A.F.S. Club has already re-stored nearly $1,000 to the treasury towardnext year's program.

P.T.A. GuidanceMeetings Listed

The River Dell Parent-Teacher Association,in cooperation with the Guidance Department,has scheduled a series of grade-level meetingsand parent workshops to keep interestedparents advised of various aspects of theirchildren's school experience. Each meetingconcentrates on the specific problems commonto a particular grade level. An effort is thusmade to help parents understand the difficultiesencountered by their children as they progressfrom grade to grade.

The workshops deal with such matters asphysical and emotional developmental patterns,reading abilities and levels, tests and the test-ing program at River Dell, curricular patternsoffered to meet individual differences, work-study programs, and college admissions. Inthe senior high school, the focus will be oncareer and college planning; in the junior highschool, on curriculum planning and coursecontent.

The grade level meetings have been sched-uled for 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings soas to give both parents an opportunity to at-tend. Refreshments will be served between7:30 and 8:00 p.m.

Work Experience ProgramTo Begin In February

A co-operative Work-Experience programwill be offered for the first time at River Dellbeginning February 1. The program, which isdesigned to give business education studentsactual on- the -job experience, is partially sup-ported by state funds under the. Vocationaland Educational Act of 1963. The programoperates in a manner somewhat similar to theDistributive Education program in that studentsale able to gain actual working experience asa part of their training.

During the morning students selected forthis program will attend classes at River Dell.As part of the program they will take thework-related course in office occupations whichmeets for a double period each day underthe direction of Mrs. Claire Hothem, chair-man of the Business Department. In the after-noon, these students will report for half aday's work in local business offices.

The advisory committee for this programincludes business men as well as educators.Serving with Mrs. Hothem on the committeeare Mr. Walter Pipp, principal at the highschool; Mr. Frank Brunetto, director of Ed-ucational Services; Mr. Stanley Greaves, RiverEdge insurance executive; and Mr. ThomasDineen. a member of the Hackensack TrustCompany.

Rental of such equipment as keypunch andsteno-lab machines is made possible throughstate funds. Such machines are needed toimplement the course in office occupations.

Two Students SelectedAs A.F.S. Candidites

Two students in the junior class, Annettede Stefano and Harvey Sacks, have beenselected as semi-finalists in the American FieldService Summer and School Programs for1967. These students were selected from agroup of 22 applicants on the basis of theirscholarship, school records, general character,and ability to represent the United States ina foreign country.

Their records have been sent to the NewYork American Field Service Headquarters,which will make the final decision as to whichcandidate they will actually try to place in ahome abroad for either next summer or forthe entire 1967-68 school year.

The New York Headquarters' decision inthese matters will not be announced until nextspring. Actual placement of an applicant willdepend on whether or not a suitable homeabroad can be found. Cathleen Muehleck, asenior, was the River Dell A.F.S. delegatelast year who spent the months of July andAugust in Austria under A.F.S. auspices.

To date, the River Dell American FieldService Chapter has brought students fromGermany, Costa Rica, Pakistan, Brazil, India,Peru, the Philippines, France and Argentinato River Dell for a year's study, and has sentRiver Dell students to Denmark, Sweden,Germany, Switzerland, the Philippines andAustria for summer visits, and to France fora semester in school there.

Football Banquet HeldMore than 275 parents and friends of the

players honored the 72 man football squadat the annual River Dell Boosters banquet onNovember 30. The 24 seniors who have com-pleted their football careers at River Dellreceived gifts in commemoration of the oc-casion.

Although the team finished in second placein the North Bergen Interscholastic Leaguewith a record of eight wins and only onedefeat, it is considered one of the strongestRiver Dell aggregations ever fielded. Headcoach Matthew Certosimo described the teamas an explosive club which also was thefinest defensive unit he has coached. RiverDell was the second lowest scored-on team inBergen County while itself scoring an averageof 38 points per game. Certosimo praised theleadership by co-captains Richard Looramand William Taylor throughout the season.The only defeai, a one touchdown loss toPascack Valley, was totally obliterated by thestunning 59-0 victory over Englewood, one ofthe stronger teams in Bergen County's seniorcircuit which had permitted the seven pre-vious opponents to score a total of only 49points against it. Certosimo characterizedRiver Dell's performance against Englewoodas the strongest offensive and defensive displayby any team in River Dell's history, includingformer undefeated River Dell teams. Whileseveral outstanding backs and linemen will begraduating in June, coach Certosimo predictsthat we will have another powerful aggregationnext season.

Soccer Team WinsN.B.I.L. ChampionshipThe River Dell varsity soccer team has won

the North Bergen Interscholastic LeagueChampionship this year in the first seasonthat soccer has been sponsored by this groupas a League sport. Eight teams, all of whichplay each other twice during the season, arein the League. They are Glen Rock, RamapoRegional, Ramsey, Old Tappan, Demarest,Northern Highlands, Waldwick, and River Dell.According to "Cass" Muehleck, River Dell'sveteran soccer coach, Waldwick did not finishits season and was not involved in the scoring.River Dell also played two independent games,with Tenafly and Bloomfield.

The team's record for the season was elevenwins, two losses, and two ties. Coach Mueh-leck points to the game with Glen Rock asthe "squeaker" of the season, with River Dellcarrying the day by one point.

In state tournament play, River Dell alsowon its first game against Weehawken, playedat Rutherford, by a score of 4 to 3.

River Dell soccer teams over the years haveachieved a fantastic record which can be at-tributed to the inspired work of Coach Mueh-leck and the determined spirit of our boys.In his ten-year career with our students onthe playing field, Coach Muehleck's soccerteams have won a spectacular total of 112games and tied 16 others. They have lost only22 games in ten years, a record unmatched inthe county.

Perhaps because it has not come underN.B.I.L. auspices until this year, soccer as asport at River Dell has never received asmuch public notice as is given to our verysuccessful football squads. Soccer fans forma devoted coterie, however, and it is hopedthat their ranks will be substantially augmentedas interest in this sport grows.

State Department ToReview Junior High

Evaluation In FebruaryOn March 10, 1964, the State Department

of Education evaluated the junior high schooland found unsatisfactory conditions therewhich were, for the most part, the result ofovercrowding. The State Department granteda limited approval of three years in whichtime the conditions were to be corrected. Theletter conveying this information from Dr.William H. Warner, Director of SecondaryEducation, stated in part, "Although the self-study indicated that the faculty is doing acreditable job under difficult conditions, Itrust that plans are under serious consider-ation to eliminate the overcrowded conditionsdescribed by Mr. Hay in his report."

A representative from the New Jersey StateDepartment of Education will visit the juniorhigh school on February 9 and determinewhether or not to recommend that the stateextend approval of the school.

In the two and a half years which havepassed since the State Department evaluatedthe junior high school, the Board of Educa-tion, administration and staff have made everyeffort to meet the specific criticisms set forthby the state.

In 1964 when the evaluation was made, thejunior high school enrollment was thought tobe at its peak, an impression strengthened bythe fact that the enrollment fell from 1,085in 1964 to 1,062 and 1,057 in the next twoyears.

The Board of Education and administrationhoped that a steadily decreasing enrollmentwould permit the correction of the conditionsnoted by the State Department, and set abouttaking all possible steps, short of expansion,to meet state requirements.

Room 101, a large former kindergartenroom was divided to provide temporarily ap-proved space for academic classwork. Large-group instruction was introduced into the musicprogram which was held in the auditorium inorder to make the music rooms available forother classes. Class size, which remains high,was reduced to some extent, and most recom-mendations with regard to curricular offerings,supervision and teacher evaluation were met.

Many unsatisfactory conditions remained,however, including the serious inadequacy of thelibrary's physical facilities; the lack of any satis-factory area in which to conduct remedial read-ing and speech classes; the inadequacy of thequarters provided for the guidance functions;and the continuing need to schedule academicclasses in such areas as the cafeteria, mechanicaldrawing and other special purpose areas.

Had the enrollment continued to decline, theBoard and administration felt that the com-munity could "live with" the overcrowded con-ditions for another year when a substantial de-cline had been forecast.

This year, however, the enrollment at thejunior high school, far from continuine, to de-cline, has risen to 1,060. New projections, basedon actual pupil counts, indicate that a furtherincrease to an enrollment in excess of 1,150 isexpected within the next few years. At thepresent moment, there is no prospect of an en-

rollment decline at the junior high school withinthe near future which would permit even areasonable relief from the conditions here out-lined. The Board of Education, after serious andextended study of all possible alternatives, be-lieves that construction of new facilities is theonly feasible answer to the junior high schoolenrollment problem. The Board proposes toconstruct an addition which will contain fivestandard-sized classrooms, two smaller areasfor teaching of remedial speech and reading,and a new and adequate library.

Relocation of the library will permit it to

be planned as a materials center which willaccommodate the needs of the curriculum ina way which the present library could never do.

At a minimum cost, the area occupied bythe present library will be partitioned to makethree classrooms, two of which may be com-bined to form a large-group instruction room.

A second minor alteration is proposed so asto incorporate all the guidance personnel inone area. The improvement of guidance facil-ities can be accomplished by taking over theadjacent classroom 116 and dividing it intothe necessary office areas.

CREDIT - Since credit for this course could be granted by schools whosepolicy permits such a practice, attendance will be taken and a finalreport will be provided to the administration of such schools. The RiverDell Regional Board of Education is granting two credits for satisfactoryattendance and compliance with the requirements of the course. Allarrangements for credit must be made by the individual applicants throughtheir school superintendents, and registration for the course should beconfirmed by the school's administration.

LECTURERS

MR. PAUL H. BRACH, a well-known painter and printmaker, has been representedin a number of important exhibitions throughout the country during the pastten years. In New York and Los Angeles his paintings have been exhibited insix one-man shows at prominent avant garde galleries. He is represented alsoin a number of leading public and private collections, including the permanentcollections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art.Mr. Brach has taught studio courses and art history at a number of colleges anduniversities. This year he will divide his teaching between the Parsons Schoolof Design and the New York Program for Art Majors of Cornell University.

MR. THOMAS M. FOLDS, Dean of Education at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, wasformerly Chairman of the Department of Art at Northwestern University. Agraduate of Yale Collrge and the Yale School of Fine Arts, he worked during the1930's as a mural painter ar.s designer, serving also as Art Director of thePhillips Exeter Academy from 1935 to 1946. He is the author of articles invarious magazines.

MR. CHARLES McCURDY, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education of theMetropolitan Museum of Art, taught in the graduate and undergraduate schoolsof Pratt Institute, the Cooper Union, and the Mew School for Social Research.An art historian, he has edited several books on modern and oriental art andhas contributed articles to encyclopedias and other publications. Mr. McCurdy'sModern Art, a Pictorial Antholopv(Macmillan, N. Y., 1958), is a usefulreference book, for it contains over 1,000 illustrations and a bibliography of700 entries.

MISS MARGARETTA SALINGER, Associa 'research Curator in the European PaintingsDepartment of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has collaborated on severalcatalogues of paintings in the Museum's collections. She is the author of abook on flower pieces in European painting and of monographs on Michelangelo,Velazquez, Rubens, Watteau, and Monet. Miss Salinger lectures frequently at theMetropolitan and other museums and has been a guest lecturer in fine arts atBarnard College, Columbia University.

MR. ALLEN ROSENBAUM has been with the Metropolitan Museum of Art for twoyears as a Staff Lecturer in the Department of Education. He received his B.A.from Queens College and M.A. from the Institute of Fine Arts at New YorkUniversity. He studied in Rome as a Fulbripht Scholar in Art History. Hehas also taught in the School of General Studies at Queens College.

River Dell's first in-service course in the Humanities, which begins on October1'7, promises to be a most rewarding experience. I believe that it would beimpossible for anyone to find a course of this quality anywhere which did not alsocarry a substantial tuition fee. We are offering this course to staff members freeof charge. Lecturers are being reimbursed from Title III ESEA funds as part ofour over-all Humanities project.

Since the purpose of this in-service program is to help our own staff members adddepth and variety to their classroom work, teachers in the Humanities areas- -history, English, foreign language, music and art--are expected to attend.

The course, however, will be open to all other interested members of our staff,and to Humanities teachers in secondary public and parochial schools in BergenCounty. Attached are the memorandum which has already been sent to neighboringschools and the list of lectures.

Re: An Invitation to attend Art in the Modern World: an In-Service Coursein the Humanities.

The River Dell Center for the Promotion of the Humanities, established thisyear under a Title III E.S., E.A. federal grant, is offering an in-service progl-am inthe Humanities to teachers of Bergen County public and parochial schools. Thepurposeof the program is to provide opportunities for teachers in the humanities fields- -history, foreign languages, English, music and. art- -to refresh their knowledge ofthe creative arts so that they may bring added insight to their teaching.

Because the course promises to be so interesting and rewarding, we areopening it to students in the Humanities program and to their parents. There is no feewhatsoever, all expenses being borne by the Center with Title III funds. It would beimpossible for anyone to find a course of this quality anywhere which did not alsocarry a substantial tuition fee. As you can see from the attached prospectus, thelecturers who will present this course are among the foremost art authorities inthe nation.

Classes will be conducted on Monday afternoons from 4:00 p. m. to 5:15 p.m.in the River Dell Senior High School auditorium. The series will begin on October 17and conclude on January 16.

Forgive my delay in replying to your letters. Things lave bun predictably hectic,but most exciting. The course Is for the most part, going very well. What difficultieswe have center around differences in ability level (u you anticipated), and we arecautiously feeling our way here. Certainly next year we will amend some of ourgeneral requirements so as to accommodate these Individual differences more thoroughly.

I am enclosing two typical presentations, and would be glad to send you tapes ofthose which we don't have in script, if you would be interested.

As you can see, our in-service lecture series held in cooperation with Mr. boldshas generated a great deal of interest. We took your advice and opened the course tostudents and their parents with very gratifying results. The first lecture, held yesterday.was accorded a great atiCcess.

I hope the attached material will be of some help to you both this weekend and later atthe Houston conference. Mr. Reisman will also attend the Houston conference as a delegatefrom our Humanities Center and an English teacher. I hops he will be able so see youthere, however briefly.

Have you any idea yet whether you could visit River Dell at some time in the spring toevaluate our program? We must re-apply In April for our Title III grant and we would bemost grateful to have your assistance in reporting on our progress to the government.

Tomorrow and Tuesday I will wave your ma-terial at them. - And then I will take you with me to Houston whereI hope to see Mr. Keisman.

Now then - a return to River Dell in the spring? When? Before Aprilwhen you do your re- applying? What would I need - one day or two? Atthe moment I seem to have some free time during the week of March 13or during the week of March 20. What say you and your associates? Ihope to hear from you very, very soon, for I am fast running out offree days. And I would like to see how things are going.
