OPENING REMARKS OF NATIONAL CAMPAIGN ON MEDICINAL PLANTS BY DR. L. PROMILA DEVI, MEMBER SECRETARY, MANIPUR STATE MEDICINAL PLANTS
BOARD, DIRECTORATE OF AYUSH,LAMPHEL The Indian Systems of medicines, popularly known as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and
Homoeopathy are of great demand in the Country and abroad. More than 90% of Indian System of medicines are plant based and more than 85% are collected from wild. Although, in recent years cultivation of Medicinal Plants has started gaining momentum, still a significant part of our requirement continuous to be met from wild sources.
Medicinal Plants Sector has got immense potential along with sustainable agriculture by way of providing alternative sources of income to farmers. At present, the supply chain of medicinal plants is highly fragmented and makes it less remunerative to both cultivators and collectors. Quality of raw materials in the precursor of quality products, therefore GAPs, GFCPs and proper storage practices etc. are of essential parameters for the enhancement of export potential. All the relevant issues are to be made public for the sincere attention of all categories of stakeholders to join hands of co-ordination & co-operation and this is the main reason why National Campaign on Medicinal plants has been launched.
The Plan & Activities under this Campaign are: -
1. Publicity through regular participation and organization of Workshops/Seminars/
Conferences etc. 2. Developing Pamphlets, Booklets/ Brochures/ T-Shirt, Posters for display and
distribution, organizing quiz show for children and students. 3. Publication of books on different aspects of medicinal plants. 4. Demonstration of technologies developed by Institutions at farmer’s field. 5. Conduct training programme for the farmers. 6. To develop Herbal Gardens in Schools and Homes. 7. To organize State Level Competition (Poem/ elocution/ speech/tracking and nature
walk on Medicinal plants at school/ zonal level) in School, Colleges and other Educational Institutions.
8. Establishment of Nurseries. 9. To develop Market linkages and organize weekly haats for medicinal plants. 10. To develop Audio Visual programme on Medicinal Plants in vernacular languages
and relay through local Radio Stations. 11. To publish the achievements of National Campaign in local Newspaper on Weekly
basis 12. To encourage the Species Specific Campaign.
Special comments of the Dignitaries:-
Chief Guest : Dr. Najma Heptulla, Hon’ble Governor of Manipur.
Collaboration with the renowned herbal Companies is a must in
order to promote Medicinal Plants in Manipur.
Medicinal plants can play huge role in improving the economic life
of the unemployed youth of the state.
Although more than 500 Medicinal & Aromatic Plants are
available in Manipur, collectors and cultivators are not able to get
the benefit as the supply chain is not organised.
Manipur State Medicinal Plants Board has been successful in
transforming Manipur into a leading state in Medicinal Plants.
Scientific way of standardization and conservation of Medicinal
plants is the need of the hour.
