REPORT OF WORKSHOP ON

HANDMADE PAPER CRAFTS

A ten-day workshop on handmade paper crafts was organized from 11th

to 20th of December 2006 at Rural Craft & Engineering Section, Mahatma

Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialization, (MGIRI) Wardha, Maharashtra.

This workshop involved working together of designers, design and art

students, and craftsmen.

History of Handmade Paper

India is the leading country today in the world as regards the production of

handmade paper and paper products are concerned. Major concentration

of the handmade paper units is in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan,

Haryana, Tamilnadu, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The investment in a

handmade paper unit ranges from Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 25 lakhs depending

on the size and capacity. The basic raw material used in this industry is

cotton rags, recycles fibers including waste paper. Cotton and waste

paper does not require any chemical treatment since these contains high

content of cellulose. In handmade paper sector innumerable varieties of

papers and paperboards are produced with the same existing

infrastructure with slight change of raw materials and processes where as

in mill sector it is not possible. But a handmade paper unit can change the

products immediately as per the market requirements. The handmade

paper industry is a potential village industry based on decentralized

production providing employment to the poorer sections of society

particularly in rural areas. Nearly 90% of the world’s production of paper

and paperboard is wood based. Thus the paper industry has become a

source of serious threats to the entire eco system. Cutting of wood from

the forest for paper making adversely effected the environment. The

handmade paper industry when compared to the automatic mill sector it is

less capital intensive, less energy intensive and free from pollution

hazards. The industry has strength of creating gainful employment to

artisans in the villages. Considering all the inherent characters of the

industry including social cost benefits the Rural Craft & Engineering

Section, MGIRI Wardha had decided for value addition on Handmade

Paper and develops a Handmade Paper Craft cluster at nearby area of

Wardha Dist.

Objective of workshop

1. To improve the quality of existing products.

2. To create new design and improve upon existing design so that the

artifacts and products in hand-made paper can have a wider market

appeal can fetch better price for the craftsmen and provide better value

for the consumer and the craft collector.

knowledge skill, creativity, innovation, quality, value and productivity in the

area of paper crafts. This will be achieved through studio interaction.
