Report on International Day of Immunology celebration by Indian Immunology Society

Goal: To increase awareness amongst the young students and researchers around different regions of
India about Immunology and its importance of Immunology education and research in fighting the
existing and emerging challenges of human health and save lives.
What we did ,the Action Plan
IIS took a massive campaign in schools , colleges , medical institutions and research fraternity to
popularize the concept of International day of Immunology and celebrate it. This activity geared up
during last two years, the year 2015 and year 2016 under the leadership of Dr. DN Rao ,the president,
Indian Immunology Society and Dr. Nibhriti Das ,Secretary, Indian Immunology society with unanimous
support by all the executives of the society. The proposal of country wide celebration of World
Immunology Day was put forth at the General body meeting of the Indian Immunology Society on
October 2015 at Patna, India. Many of the IIS life members and members of the board of executives
volunteered to celebrate the day in their institutions. IIS executives from different states of India
enthused regional institutes to celebrate the day . Personal deliberations were carried out by the
President, Secretary and treasurer of IIS to motivate young faculty and authorities at different
institutions to observe the day.
How many people we reached
Under the aegis of Indian Immunology Society
The International day of Immunology was celebrated with great enthusiasm by twenty two institutions
in the year 2015 and by 28 institutions in the year 2016. On 2015, the general theme was “ Immunology
and challenges of human health.” This year the theme had been “Immuno-prophylaxis and
Immunotherapy”. A total of about 4000-5000 people participated in these total of 50 events organized
in these two years
The celebration : Events at different places featured research seminars, lectures, CMEs, interactive discussions, poster
and oral presentations, quiz competitions, games, debates ,World Day of Immunology walks, wearing
World Immunology Day imprinted caps ,tea shirts, using Immunology day imprinted pens and note-
books , thematic art competitions on the day and Popular talks as a part of public awareness
programs. At each event 2-4 talks were delivered by eminent scientists followed by presentations and
other activities by young researchers and college students.
Outcome These events were attended by the young students, researchers and senior scientists alike with great zeal. The organizers as well as participants found the celebration of the International Day of Immunology as a great opportunity in creating awareness about “What is Immunology , how is it a science of the survival of human race, how can the young generation take the challenges of human health in the region and also in the global perspectives” by adopting immunology research as their career goal. The participants got highly motivated to work as national ambassadors to promote Immunology education and research and its applications in preventive and therapeutic health care. The priority health challenges in the regions were projected and the message that future of Immunology lies on the strong young shoulders were received very well. Almost all the organizers pledged to celebrate the event every year and some of the participants asked” Why only a single day to have such a wonderful educative campaign ?

Indian Immunology Society has celebrated the World Immunology Day in twenty two institutions in all the
region of India. This event at every place was attended by ~ 150 including delegates, postgraduate students,
residents, PhD scholars, and faculty members and other institutions of the union territory. It was highly
appreciated by the student community and faculty alike and it was proposed to make this an annual event., It
was also suggested that the Health ministry should take initiative to incorporate the WDI theme at the
school and college curriculum
Theme: Immunology and challenges of Human Health
Goal:To spread awareness of Immunology, its intricacies and importance of Immunology Research in our
fight against diseases and ensuring good health, around every nook and corner , the north, south, east and
western regions of India.
