report from the commodore - coronado yacht club june 2017 color.pdfnothing makes a commodore happier...
TRANSCRIPT
Nothing makes a Commodore happier than a Happy Club and at the halfway point in the yacht club’s year I will submit politely that we are
indeed happy! The well attended Semi-Annual meeting in mid-May was well
attended and cordial. Opening Day preparation continues and is sure to be a
success despite your Commodores’ reluctance to make decisions until absolutely
necessary, on esoteric items like scripts and menus.
To be sure, your board continues to focus on issues related to the Port and our Replacement clubhouse. In
addition, we remain keenly focused upon our audit results, creating proper payment templates and
securing every capital improvement credit allowed in our lease. We have a June 10th workshop on
defining “special action” and the process for bringing member motions forward regardless of committee or
board support. Moreover, we will press in the fall for a determination from the Port on qualifying our
savings as eligible to be spent in such a way as to qualify for the port approved project capital expense
gross-rent deduction.
The Coronado Maritime Foundation is
coming to a waypoint and we as a club are
positioned to benefit. Once dedicated to all
the South Bay Clubs, a change in the
governing structure of the CMF will allow
CYC additional opportunities related to tax-
exempt donations as well as focusing both
the benefits and the donor base on
Coronado-specific maritime efforts.
We are in the process of a review of the
Kempff High Point Deed of Gift and will soon
bring forward a renewing of the document
that will reflect both a reverence for the traditions of our club’s highest racing honor as will as recognize
the relevant racing changes that have take place sine the last revision.
We have adopted a social media policy and we remind members and staff to be courteous and respectful to
those about whom you post, gram or tweet, be they members, guests or part of our treasured staff. As I
pointed out in my comments at the Semi-Annual meeting, member discipline has sadly taken up way too
much of your board’s time. Please be mindful of the club’s policies related to personal behavior while on
CYC property.
Our philanthropic homeruns continue with the return of Make a Wish to CYC. The committees and
volunteers aided by significant staff efforts, helped raise over $130,000. Additionally, Jamie MacArthur
added to his string of successful K-MAC regattas with a well attended and very successful event in April.
Also, the Wampler Foundation placed a bet on CYC as the host again for their epic poker event. And while
we are taking gaming, the Junior Program raised over $30,000 on their Casino Night that had been turned
into new windsurfers and “Bic” sailboats.
Next up in the hopper is the Sharp Hospice event which when all is said and done will have added another
Half-Million Dollars to our community impact. As my mother was a Sharp Hospice client, I can simply say
that this charity deserves your support. By the way, I and the rest of Jon Sanchioli’s crew aboard
Conquest will be hunting for a Walker Cup three-pete so stay tuned!

Today’s Paraprosdokian is: I can picture in my mind
a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they’d never expect it.
At the May Finance meeting, Club Financing ad hoc member Bill
Huck reviewed their improved draft presentation on possible
new clubhouse construction financing options to be used as a
decision model subject to Club member input. This presentation
will be available for Club input at either workshop or future
membership meetings. A Draft copy is attached including changes
by the Ad Hoc committee following suggestions made during the
March, April and May Finance Committee meetings.
The Finance Committee has finalized a dashboard cover sheet for
financials to be used with the Consolidated Rolling Income
Statement previously deemed ready for use.
Finance also reviewed progress of the Port audit on CYC capital
expenditures. The Port Real Estate department and CYC Board,
Finance members and staff reviewed and discussed those areas in
which we found disagreement. Recognizing the good work of staff
in countering the draft audit, Port has postponed the due bill
pending research into those areas we suggested. Both ongoing
and upcoming approved capital expenditures could potentially
offset payments of audited rent figures and ameliorate financial
impact on the Club when any owed amounts are paid.
March financials show the Club performing well and the first
trimester results are positive for the 2017 year.

The May cruiser navigation contest was held on Saturday, May
20, under crystal clear sunny skies.
After the tidal current events of the four previous contests, this
contest presented a welcome relief with a gentle ebb current
forecast during the contest, and a simple, easily navigated
course to follow.
The course began at the Coronado Bridge Pier “18,” led north to
green channel buoy “21,” and over to the Navy mooring buoy
“19” near Harbor Island for the first timed “Mark.” Then, the
course led south again to the bridge where the second “Mark”
was called abeam of bridge pier “20.” Continuing south in the
channel, the third “Mark” was encountered abeam of red
channel buoy “32” and the fourth “Mark” was checked near the
entrance to Coronado Cays at the “Private C” concrete shoal
marker. The final legs were north once again in the south bay
“flats,” with the Finish called at bridge pier “19.”
Benign currents, a simple buoy to buoy contest, and agreeable
weather. What could possibly go wrong to prevent our team
from all scoring in the single digits! Nothing, except unplanned
mechanical failure!
During the contest, Jeff Calabrese had to drop out because of a
fractured steering arm on his rudder yoke. Boat things happen
at the most inopportune times.
Except for Jeff’s misfortune, the day was perfect for cruiser
navigation with sunny skies, gentle winds, and unlimited
visibility. The currents were roughly as predicted, with some
anomalies present in the Coronado channel. While some of us
tried to compensate for what appeared to be greater current
speeds than predicted, post race analyses revealed that we
would have been better off if we just did not touch our
throttles.
When the results of the contest were announced following
lunch at Coronado Cays YC, Magnus Karlsson finished third
overall with an error percentage just over one percent, and I
was fortunate to capture first place with a cool 0.49 percent
error. Overall, a good day for our team; If Jeff had not
encountered his boat’s steering issue, we’re confident he would
have placed near the top as well.
Our next contest is sponsored by the San Diego Sail & Power
Squadron. Hosted by Southwestern YC, the race is scheduled
for Saturday, June 17. This will be the first of four near shore
contests, leaving the bay traffic and the pleasure boaters
behind. Only challenges will be the ocean currents, the sea
state, and perhaps a lone fishing boat. We’ll report on our
successes next month.
We hope to have more CYC members becoming interested in
participation in cruiser navigation and joining with us on the
water. Please contact me at [email protected] if you
would like more information about our sport and see how you
can become a part of our winning team.

Port Captain’s Report By Port Captain Dave Flint
F or those lucky CYC members
who have wet slips at our
marina please be aware our
slip rules require you to file a Float
Plan with our Office if you leave your
slip for more then 24 hours. This enables us to assign your
slip to CYC members who have boats in other marinas to your
slip on a temporary basis so they can enjoy the same things
you do as a permanent slip holder. Be considerate of
members without slips and file a Float Plan. Thank you.
The temporary shallow slips on the golf course side of C Dock
assignments change to 7 day rentals starting in April and
continue through September of each year. Demand for these
slips increases during the Summer Season. If another member
does not request this slip the original member may stay an
additional 7 days. This may be repeated. These slips are
about 20 to 25 feet long.
Just a safety reminder. It is always a good idea to have two
people present and working together while operating our
hoists when moving boats in and out of the water. Safety
First.
If you are in the market, ITM, to buy a boat for a slip at CYC, or
if you are offered a wet slip from the Ready Slip Wait List, or
are thinking about being on the Ready Slip List, please be
aware of the following. Coronado Yacht Club uses the Length
Overall, LOA, as the official measurement of your boat to be
conforming to a certain size slip. Your boat must be a certain
LOA to qualify as conforming to your assigned slip. The
technical definition of Length Overall is as stated in the 2017
and 2016 CYC Yearbooks in the section “Slip Rules” in the Slip
Assignment Guidelines. Please do not rely on what is on the
side of your boat, the manufacturer or the broker who is
trying to sell you a boat. For example, in a recent case at CYC a
member brought in a boat that had graphics on the side of the
boat that said “320” and the boat’s actual length overall was
close to 37’ which of course means it was nonconforming for
its assigned slip. Best thing to do if you are not sure is to ask
Fabian or me to measure to see how long it really is, from the
very front to the very back including everything that is
normally on the boat. Or you can just talk to us. We would
like to help you out by not having you in a situation of not
being conforming for the slip you would like to be assigned.
Thanks.

Waves and Words
L et the good times roll, the
season has officially opened
and summer is on the way. All
of the Festivities of Opening Day are
behind us again and the cannon has
sounded to announce that the bay is clear of ice and it’s safe to
get underway! Shorts, T-shirts, and flip flops are now the
uniform of the day. I’m sure you have great plans for summer
and I hope they all work out for the very best! Summer is, and
always has been, my favorite season of the year, what’s not to
like about it in our wonderful corner of the world? We have so
much to be thankful for!
As I was thinking about all the projects I’d like to get done
while the days are long and the weather is warm I realized
that my list was rather ambitious on the work side of things so
I think I’ll focus a little more on the pleasure and relaxation
part! Now you all know, having followed this article over the
years, that I always work things around to sharing some part
of Scripture with you, hey it’s what I do, so here it is: As I was
considering all those summer plans and projects it came to my
mind that God Almighty sees them all and His presence is
inescapable. In Psalm 139, King David wrote about that very
thing. I won’t quote the whole Psalm, you can check that out
for yourselves if you like, there are some wonderful truths to
be found there. David begins by saying: “Oh Lord You have
searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and
my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You
comprehend my path and my lying down, and are aquainted
with all my ways….” Good, bad or indifferent, God knows me.
The amazing thing is He loves me in spite of me!
David goes on to say in V.7, “Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into
heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell behold You are
there.” Wow! There’s a concept for you! “If I take the wings of
the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even
there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold
me.” Those are most of the first ten verses and they truly
speak to all of us. Like it or not, believe it or not, He’s there!
Till next time, enjoy the coming of summer, count your
blessings and remember: Be kind to one another, care for one
another, and love one another. May you have fair winds and
following seas as you make way into summer...... Chaplain out!

Sail Fleet Report
By Sail Fleet Captain Fred Hawes
T he KITTY MUHL Ladies Day Race is July 14th. The June Sail Fleet meeting is our best opportunity to define what that race does, what
classes there will be, what prizes to offer, and in general stir up interest. Please DO come to the meeting.
After much staff work, the regenerated Deed of Gift for the Kempff Perpetual Trophy was presented at the May 9 meeting. It was not quite ready for publication, but
subsequently has been completed by Fleet Captain Curtis Milioti, earning a thumbs up from Staff Commodore Skip Kempff, and will be presented again at the June 13 meeting.
Other topic(s) to be covered at the June and future meetings will be revealed by BLAST. Hope to see you there, and please do stop me and let me know what interests you in the way of a lecture topic.
Monthly Sail Fleet Meetings
SAIL FLEET MEETING at the CYC Clubhouse Tuesday, June 13th at 6:30 PM
Rod & Reel By Rod & Reel Chair Paul Dodson
A t our May meeting, we discussed various aspects of our Rod and Reel events. On
April 27th, 2017, some of us attended a special meeting with San Diego Board of Port Commissioners, regarding the Draft Port Master Plan Update. This meeting was designated as Board Workshop No. 2.
The meeting was the focus of the Port Master Plan and possible changes to it. From a fishing perspective, our concern was for the mooring of the Everingham Bros. Bait Service vessels in the area of tuna.
Although the cruise ship move elicited the most heated debate during the hearing, commissioners spent more time talking about preserving commercial fishing operations in Tuna Harbor and G Street Mole.
Several fishermen said they were “scared” by the “mixed use” designation appearing on master plan maps, but staff said they would propose clarifying language and policies that would preserve commercial fishing operations.
We trust that Tuna Harbor and the surrounding area will be left intact, as Tuna Harbor has long been historical in it’s own way for the commercial fishermen of San Diego.
The 8th Annual Bay Fishing Challenge will be held on Saturday, June 17th, 2017, and will be co-hosted by Coronado Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club.
The tournament will conclude at 4pm with weigh-in’s, food (no-host bar), and awards ceremony immediately following weigh-in. The San Diego Yacht Club Pavilion will be the location for this event.
Remember, this is a Bay Tournament and there is no entry fee. However, you must register for this tournament. You can sign up at the CYC front desk as of May 17th.
Should you have any further questions, please call Paul Dodson at 619-993-3943.
It should be noted that this tournament was won by CYC last year with the efforst of flag member Al Thomas and his good friend Rick Evans, and—yes—they will again enter this year. Thanks Al and Rick!
The 20th Annual Southbay Combined Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 and will be hosted by Coronado Yacht Club.
In order to enter this tournament, you must be a member of CYC, CVYC, CCYC, or NYCSD (hence, Southbay combined).
All weigh-ins will be at CYC no later than 6pm.
Yes, call Paul should you have any questions about this tournament.
The Annual CYC Fish Fry and Awards Dinner will be held Sunday, August 6th, 2017 at CYC.
This event is always a sell-out and a great time for all. Remember to sign up as of July 6th, at the front desk.
Remember—5:30 pm no-host bar and 6pm dinner. Cost to you is $16.50. Hope to see everyone there, for an evening of laughs.

Next on my list is Staff Commodore C.S. “Bee” Kempff. Sailing
was his passion. I met him when I was 17 and he was my
principal mentor all my life. Bee also mentored several of
CYC’s “rock stars,” Olympic Gold Medalist with Robbie Haines
and Rod Davis. Rod also coached several America’s Cup teams.
When I met him he sailed “Surprise,” a heavily built 26’ double-
ender with limited sail area and no power or winches. No
problem, we carried a long pole and set a flying jib. We
trimmed sails with a block and tackle and learned the art of
preplanning to get to a morning start away from the club. We
also learned to sail in and out of the slip in all conditions. He
trained his crew to handle every task including not only
helmsmen, but decision making.
In the 1950’s, new cruiser-racer designs flourished, popular So
-Cal picks were the Kettenberg 38 and the Lapworth 36. Bee
sold “Surprise” and purchased “Sunrise,” L 36-18 from the
builders. Interestingly, the L36 was built “skin first” with edge
nailed wood, built over a plug, with later-installed bent oak
frames, a technique for light but strong construction. The
famous “birch bark” canoe and other ancient sail vessels were
built skin first and being sewn together, before nails. Planked
hulls came later.
Pre-purchase discussions centered on whether to install an
engine or not. Since Bee wanted to expand his sailing venues to
race Newport to Ensenada, and cruise Catalina and the
Channel Islands, it was decided to opt for power. Subsequently,
“Sunrise” raced almost every year to Ensenada (they had an
L36 class in the ‘50’s, ‘60’s, ‘70’s), and was awarded the
Perpetual when the trophy was retired. Also, attending the
annual YRU Catalina Cruise & Race, and visits to Catalina’s
Cherry Cove were yearly highlights. Popular local cruising
spots were Mariners Cove in Mission Bay, The South Coronado
Island saddleback, the lee of Point Loma, the anchorage
between SWYC and SDYC, and Brickyard Cove in South Bay.
Bee and his wife Peggy raced regularly with the CYC handicap
fleet and invitational races such as the popular “Hot Rum Race”
sailed off the bay entrance. One year he represented the Club
in the Lipton Cup Competition, a boat for boat event. The boat
was a bit under-rigged so we stripped the boat of all excess
weight (cruising gear, removable cockpit seats, etc.), and
prayed for wind. Alas, we were first to the weather mark,
expecting the wind to increase as it usually does, but the wind
died and the “hot” boats cleaned our clock down wind, a bitter
pill. On the up-side, crew and friends held a 25 year party for
Sunrise in 1983.
In 1985 Bee suffered a fatal heart attack while racing in the
bay, having enjoyed life to the fullest, a true master mariner.
ATTENTION MEMORY LANE FANS: I knew both Joe McKane
and Whit Davis for many years but I need help with their
stories. There must be a ton of great stories about Joe and/or
Whit that I can’t remember or didn’t hear. If you have any, Just
drop them off at the front office c/o “Memory Lane.”
Thanks, Charlie
