Executive Summary

Now-a-days the telecommunication industry is booming industry and playing a vital role in

development of our economy. Edotco Bangladesh Co Ltd. is being just the latest example.

Financial muscle has been displaced by quality and depth of management and speed of execution

as the final arbiter in the network Infrastructure sector by edotco. And I had the opportunity to

work with the corporate finance team as an intern for three months. The report is the reflection of

that three months learning and hard work. The report has been started for the infrastructure

industry in Bangladesh and the current status of factoring operation of edotco Bangladesh Co.

Ltd. Presently, they are working as a sister concern of Robi Axiata Ltd. Through this project they

can do their operation separately and generate more profit. Edotco introduced the site sharing

technology and they are the leader of the market. Lastly, the report concludes with few of the

recommendation that I thought can make the process more efficient and ends with references of

some of the sources that have supported me in finishing these report.

The number of mobile subscribers is increasing day by day. Over the last few years, the number

of mobile subscribers in Bangladesh has been more than or close to more than doubling on an

annual basis. The subscriber base had reached 124.70 million by Janyary-2015 and ranked in the

9th highest number of mobile subscribers country around the world. And the mobile phone

changed the Bangladesh’s economy and culture. The competitive environment has further

intensified due to the entry of new operators into the market. Individually, Bangladesh’s leading

mobile operator, Grameen Phone Ltd. (GP), has more than 50 million subscribers (as of October

2014), Banglalink Digital Communications Limited has more than 29.45 million (as of April

2014), Robi Axiata Limited (Robi) has 25.3 million (as of December 2014) and Airtel

Bangladesh Limited (Airtel) has 8.263 subscribers with 7.3% of market share (as of January

2014). Teletalk Bangladesh Ltd. (Teletalk) has 2.980 million subscribers (as of January 2014).

On the other side, Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited (Citycell), Bangladesh oldest mobile

operator, has added 1.6 Million subscribers (as of January 2014). Last year all mobile companies

introduced 3G for the first time in our country. And behind the successful story of the more

subscribed companies is best network facilities. Behind the best network there is only one name

is edotco. They introduced tower sharing concepts for the first time Bangladesh. Edotco

Bangladesh Co Ltd. began as a subsidiary of Robi Axiata Ltd. but now they want to be

independent and do business separately.

Rationale

This report is an internship report prepared as a requirement for the completion of the BBA

program. The primary goal of the internship was to provide an ‘on the job’ exposure to the

student and an opportunity for translation of theoretical conceptions in real life situation. The

students are placed in enterprises, organizations, research institutions as well as development

projects. In this connection, after the completions of the BBA program, I was assigned to the

Finance Department of edotco for practical orientation. I chose the topic “Fixed assets merger

of Edotco Bangladesh Ltd.” for my internship report under the supervision of Mr. Abdul Kader

Nazmul and also guided by Mr. Delwar Hossain. Manager, Financial Accounting, Finance.

Objectives of the Study

The objective of the study is to gather practical understanding of Finance in telecom

infrastructure service industry. This internship gives us a chance to co-ordinate with the

theoretical knowledge and the practical experience in reconciliation process. The following

are of objective for internship in an infrastructure service industry: The main objective of this

report is as follows-

Edotco follows a big hierarchy. In the hierarchy, there are 5 different departments which are

headed by the Managing Director. Under each department there are several divisions. These

department and divisions plays a very crucial role for the success of the company.

Sales and Marketing

The overall Sales and marketing department has five sub divisions which include: Business

Development, External Sales, Anchor Tenant, Tech Sales Support, and Sales Support & Product

Marketing.

Finance

Technology department consists of five divisions which include Financial Controller, Financial

Report & Fixed Assets Management, Business Planning & Revenue Management, Corporate

Finance and Financial Compliance.

III. Activities Undertaken

Edotco Bangladesh Co Ltd. began as a subsidiary of Robi Axiata Ltd. but now they want to be

independent and do business separately. For that reason edotco Bangladesh Co Ltd is buying the

passive networking infrastructure of Robi at a price tag of $145 million and they will invest an

additional $50 million in the next one year to upgrade and expand its network to operate these

assets. It will provide tower services to all telecom, Wi-Fi, WiMax and other similar

organizations with communication needs. Currently, the company has more than 6,000 towers in

operation, according to the company's website.

The telecom regulator had enacted an infrastructure sharing guideline to let telecom operators share

their towers, but the initiative was not successful. So, it’s a very important project for them. They are

buying 44 types of equipment form more than 7000 sites of Robi Axiata Bangladesh. Edotco divided the

Robi tagged their assets in different names. Edotco makes the asset class to denote the type of

assets and make it easier to understand. Robi tagged their assets in different names. Edotco

makes the asset class to denote the type of assets and make it easier in this working process.

The vital roles are playing by the vendors. They go to the different sites inspect and verify the

equipment and put the edotco tags on the assets to make it identifiable to the edotco. They also

note down the Robi tags with those equipment, if they found them. For avoiding the problematic

situations, they capture the picture of the assets. There are seven vendor companies presently

working in this project. Their name given below:

Work related

I was the intern in the finance department. My roles and responsibilities were the following:

1. Identify the problems in fixed asset register(FAR)2. Reconcile edotco vendor’s data with Robi’s fixed asset register.

Though it was a team work. It was a very important project for the company. I had too much responsibility to do it efficiently and properly. If I do any mistakes company can got more losses. So, I had divided my works in two steps. Those steps are inputs and outputs.

I mostly done my desk work in excel. Previously, I got some vendors data by those I input those in the reconciliation file. The process of input and output given in the diagram below:

Other relevant activities

This is a very big and important project for the company and they want to separate from Robi

before next year. So, for this project they need huge work force. They finance department

decided to take more employees and train other departments’ employees on this project. As I

worked from very beginning in this project. So, I got more responsibilities to done the project

properly. Some relevant activities are describing below:

1. Collect data from the vendors

Previously I said vendors are playing the vital role in this project. They visits the sites and

identify the assets and Robi tags. And note down all the information. So, after visiting the

site, they send us those data. And I collected them form the server.

2. Arrange vendors data

There are more than 7000 sites. And every sites has more than 90 assets. Presently, nine

vendor companies 500 peoples are working in this project. So, it’s too hard to arrangement

the data properly. And the arrangement makes my work easier.

3. Checking the data

The edotco can’t visit all the sits psychically. So, some data can be miss by the vendors. For

assurance they capture some picture with code. I matched them. If there is any problematic

situation or any reputed data. I complained to the vendor’s company.

4. Inform manager on daily progress:

From the very beginning I was telling it’s a very important and huge project for this

company. So there are more than 30 peoples are working in this project. Every day average

60 sites are reconciled. Every day, I need to inform about daily updates about the project.

5. Train other department’s employee :

Though, I started it as a finance department work. It was too hard to finish the project within

September. And there was a lots of sites. On an average if I want to finish the project within

that time I need to complete more than 90 sites per day. And I waste lots of time on other

tasks. So, I start train other departments’ employee to help to complete the target. For that

reason I need to train the other department employees i.e. HR, Corporate finance, Sales and

marketing etc.

6. Identify and recheck problems :

For the other departments’ employee they don’t get much time to do this work. They have

other own works. That’s why they can’t give much concentrate in this project. After their

submission of data. I need to recheck those and give feedback to manager and directors.

IV. Constraints/Challenges

Every research work has to face some limitations while conducting various research activities in

various extents. There was no exception in the case of me while I was pursuing my internship

program. I had to come across many challenges to acquire the exact outcome from my activities.

Observed in the organization

Organizational environment

Work environment is very important for an internee. As a new entrance in organization it’s a

matter how adapt with work place. It is always blessed for an internee getting very helpful

supervisor. I faced challenging task inside the office that I have experienced first ever.

Limitation of time

A study on like this topic may take significant amount of time where this internship had to be

accomplished within limited three months of time as required by the university. The university

requires ample amount of work within such a short time and this was a great challenge for me

and providing with all required information was impossible in some extents.

Miscommunication

This a project work and operations team is identifying and verifying the equipment through the

vendors. Especially, they are playing the vital role of this project. Sometimes miscommunication

happened and some different information come out. e.g. Assets can’t identified or assets tags

and class didn’t match etc.

Lack of Inspection

Presently, there are more than 7000 sites around Bangladesh. So it’s too hard to inspect

physically by visiting every sites. Some data can be false. That’s why edotco should inspect the

data with evidence very carefully.

Repetition of edotco tags

Edotco tags every equipment with different tags. As an example, in a battery rack there are 24

cells. Robi tags their battery rack and cell by one tag. Edotco tags the battery rack and cells in 25

different tag numbers.

Frequently changes in asset list

There are 44 different types (Appendix) of assets edotco are planning to buy from Robi Axiata

Ltd. But, there are few different types of assets identified after sites verification. So, several

times different types of assets come up and added in the assets list. And some assets classes are

changed in the list after the verification.

Wrong Inputs in FARs

On the activities undertaken. I said, edotco is a sister concern of Robi Axiata Ltd. Presently, they

want to separate for doing business separately. That’s why they taken this steps. There are a huge

amounts of assets, they are buying from Robi. Most of assets are old and robi tags not found and

not visible in the assets. So, it was too hard to identify the assets form the Robi far and some data

can be wrong in the inputs.

Robi tags not found in assets

There are two fixed asset register in this project. Robi provided their FAR to edotco. Edotco

buying all passive assets form Robi. But there are a lots of active assets in their far. And most of

assets are new and they didn’t input in their FAR yet.

Vendor management

There are nine vendors are working in this project. So, another constraints to manage them in a

time frame. Previously I said, some data can be wrong. Because of the lack of inspection. For the

identification of wrong data vendor management is important in this project. Otherwise sites can

be repeated by another vendors.

Train up other departments employees

It is a very big project. There are more than seven thousands sites for reconsolidated. So, I need

more human power. For the benefits company decided to divided the works into different

departments. That’s why they decided to train them. And I and my team members did the vital

role on the training session. Though, it was finance related work. So, I faced too much problem

while training other departments’ employees. i.e. sales and marketing, HR etc.

Academic Preparation

3 months is not enough for learning organization culture and also learn about “Advantages &

Disadvantages” of an organization Accounts & Finance policy. So I think it should be 18 weeks

that help lot for better understanding.

Academic Similarities

During my Internship period in edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd, I have to work for the fixed asset

management department which is fully Finance and Operation oriented. I am a student of

Accounting and Finance department and I found lots of my study materials which are fully

related with my work. During fixed asset marge I have found many similarities in accounting

terms like accusation, merger, and present price evaluation etc. Working with all these terms in

real life basis made me understand the importance of it.

Academic dissimilarities

In many cases, I have experienced mismatch with my academic courses. This is because the

university does not always provide the practical knowledge. Also, the university always

emphasis on the theoretical knowledge and I had not much scopes for gaining much practical

knowledge. Even though my University always taught me by the books but in the real world

every organization follows different rules and structure. Even though I work in a infrastructure

development, everything is related to Operation and communication, my primary responsibilities

are receive data from vendors, data verification, identify wrong inputs, FAR reconsolidation and

check wrong inputs in the edotco FAR.

Missing knowledge

Doing internship at edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd, I find some missing knowledge which university

should provide me during BBA program.

Have to add a course on Microsoft Office, especially excel.

University should add practical field visit session at major course.

Arrange conference which can give us work related experience.

Corporate jobs are much more challenging and up to date so the university also needs to

make adjustments accordingly to its curriculum.

University should introduce some more programs or courses which are directly related with

organizational work.

V. Lessons learned from the Internship

Program

The lesson about the organization I have learned from the entire internship program was really

important. I had the opportunity during the program to get a closer look at the various

Operational activities along with all other accounting activities of edotco Bangladesh Ltd. All I

have learnt is about various departments of the Organization, their Management, General

activities, Operation and so on. Overall, the whole program helped me both understanding the

Financing and Operational activities and making the report smoothly required by the department.

Efficiency on Microsoft office

During the internship, my work fully depend on MS Office. My supervisor teach me the proper

utilization of this application. And how to work in excel efficiently within a limited time. The

formula, functions and short cut key makes my work easier and efficient.

Multi-dimensional Task Accomplishment

It is required that an intern will deal with various sectors and departments of an organization. As

an intern of edotco, I felt that I have achieved some more dimensions while I was studying on the

various sectors of the organization. These multi-dimensional pieces of work could be valuable

for my career ahead of me.

Team work and group tasking activities

A team can make something happen quicker than an individual. Team work is the best way to

achieve some greater goals. I came to know how important is team work and how to coordinate

works with various teams. In edotco the operations and fixed asset management are inter

dependent in this project so it was a great opportunity for me to learn these things.

Adjustment with the work place and Socialization

Organizational socialization means the adjustment of the skill, academic knowledge and

behavior with the working environment in the working place. I got sufficient assistance from the

working people in terms of acquiring enough idea about their working strategy. This enhanced

my knowledge, skill and the power of implementing of my academic knowledge in a workplace.

I believe this is much quite important and also the whole program made me ready for my future

career.

Enhancement of Communication Skill

Edotco Bangladesh Ltd. provides a very friendly corporate environment whereas there is always

a chance to discuss relevant matters with the seniors. This helped me to learn some inter personal

communication factors. Within my team I had to attend in various meeting where I have to

engage in the team conversation. Through these I achieved significant amount of knowledge

about the basic communication terms.

Familiarization with Corporate Culture

It is essential that a workplace could have people from different cultural back ground within it. It

was not the exception while I was working in edotco. Mixing with the culture of the organization

and coping up with the people from different background really furnished me with knowledge of

workplace diversity. I have also observed the customers from different cultures are being served

by the organization and gained the skill of maintaining a unique culture regardless possessing

different cultural backgrounds by the people. Undoubtedly, the corporate culture of edotco was

truly amazing.

Facilities I got as an Intern which motivated me

Edotco provide Internship allowances, invitation of dinner party invited by various vendors,

which gave me some extra motivation for work because there are very few organization who

provides these kind of facilities to the interns.

Lessons I have learnt from University’s Internship Program

The internship is a part of my BBA program. AIUB has given us this opportunity to have a

practical job experience before getting into a permanent job as a full time employee. Definitely

this internship program will help me a lot in job sectors. Internship helps me to learn lots of

things which will be very effective for the near future.

5.1 Summery

Edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd (An Axiata Company) is one of the reputed multinational companies

in Bangladesh. They have continued their business with good reputation. As a leading company

in Mobile Telephone and Network Infrastructure operations they always try to maintain the

highest quality of their products and services. Their Finance Department is strong & treats their

employees as an asset. Edotco Bangladesh Co. Ltd has already earned reputation as a very

potential Infrastructure Company of the country. This has been possible due to skilled

manpower, which has been developed by taking proper recruitment and selection strategies and

giving sufficient training and development opportunities in the Finance Department. Edotco

Bangladesh Co. Ltd had achieved lots of recognitions and achievements in their Finance

Department and also the Operations and Engineering is known as the core source of the Finance

Department because that is the place where the equipment’s are being introduced and it’s fixed

to the machines. Operations and Engineering is the department which provides good quality

services and they are responsible for these services if the services quality is bad then the whole

operations unit suffers. But positively Operations and Engineering has been working very swiftly

throughout the year and still edotco is the market leader in the country. Now after separation of

Robi Axiata Ltd. It will get more benefits for doing business independently. Edotco Bangladesh

Co. Ltd is functioning very well and we hope that it will continue its operations and have better

operations in future. The company wants to establish itself as a benchmark company in

infrastructures service activity. To gain this the company needs to focus more on the

communication of the brilliant operation process initiatives that the company is undertaking. The

company should be more vocal about its achievements and in turn gain effectiveness, visibility

and hence appreciation.

5.2 Suggestions

Tower sharing has been newly introduced in Bangladesh and international infrastructures is yet

to be introduced. Recommendations relevant fixed assets management of edotco are given

below:

Edotco should monitor the performance of its vendors. It should be ensured that the vendors

are tagged every passive equipment properly.

Edotco should increase this project time duration. Within this short time the worker can’t

work without pressure.

They should motivate the employee more. For decrease the stress.

They should look up on the repetition of their own tags on the asset. Otherwise It’ll be too

hard to valuation the assets properly.

Frequently changes in the asset list is another problem. So, they should ensure the Robi what

kind of asset they will buy. That can make a conflict.

They should discuss with Robi about their Robi’s Fixed Asset Register. Why more assets are

not found there.

It is positive that edotco finally want to get apart from Robi Axiata Bangladesh. They want to do

business independently under Axiata Group. This will be more successful and accurate, if they

can more concentration on this project with this suggestion.
