1. RECRUITMENT as per 31 August 2012 • 5 positions vacant in the Depot/ Waste Management Facility • 2 positions vacant in the Civic Centre/ Library/Alice Solar City

2. TRAINING activities as per 31 August 2012 • Confined Space Entry training • Chainsaw training • Traffic Management • Individual courses as required • Council Orientation Day

3. OH&S • No workers compensation claims for this period • 12 staff will be trained in four training and assessment modules from Certificate 4

to assist with competency testing of staff

4. ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT • Logs of Claims have now been submitted by Council and Civic Centre/Library

employee representatives

5. PROCEDURAL STATEMENTS AND DIRECTIVES (PSD) • OHS&W PSD to CEO for approval • Social Media Usage PSD being redrafted • Telephone Usage PSD now approved by CEO

• Children's Book Week: o Children aged 5 -- 12 made paper mache viking helmets (session 1) o Storytime with gardening theme o sunflower seed planting activity at the front of the Library o Illustrator Ann James presented a workshop where they were shown

techniques in both pastel and water colour o Children aged 5 — 12 completed their paper mache viking helmets.

• School group visit of 8 children in year 3 from the School of the Air and were given a tour of the Library and an introduction to our services.

• Health Themed Storytime was attended by a group from Yipirinya pre-school. This was followed by a screening of 'Listen Up', a National Indigenous Ear Health Campaign, presented by CAAMA Productions.

• Gap Afterschool Care program: 35 children from the Gap Afterschool Care Program aged 5 -12, including staff members, visited the Library for their initial visit as part of an ongoing program of bi-monthly visits on Thursday afternoons. They took part in a treasure trail activity, and prizes were given out to the winning team.

3. EVENTS • Sing Australia demonstrations on 13th, 20th and 27th August. This was part of

Seniors Month celebrations. • Soul Food in the Library.

4. DISPLAYS/EXHIBITIONS • "Remembering Territory families" touring exhibition • Alice Springs flower show display.

5. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS • The Oral history project, Centralian Voices: Two of the interviews have been

transcribed. Transcription of the remainder of the interviews is ongoing. • Author Don McColl generously donated a copy of his new book to the Alice

Springs Collection. Don did some of his background research in the collection. The book is: Henbury Craters & Meteorites: their discovery, history and study / by Svend Buhl and Don McColl htto://www.meteorite- recon.com/en/Henbury Meteorites and Craters Book.html. The book was presented to the Mayor on Monday 27 th August. Cameron Boon from the Centralian Advocate was present to photograph the occasion.

6. OUTREACH & PROMOTION • The Children and Youth Services Officer attended 'Stories in the Park' at Alice

Springs Desert Park. • The Library did a short presentation at the Flynn Drive Community Health

Centre during August, to promote Baby Rhyme Time and Library services to new parents.

• Manager Library Services, Promotions and Events Officer and Inter-Library Loans Officer attended the St Phillips Careers Expo.

7. STAFF • The new Library Indigenous Trainee Anya Riley commenced Monday, 20 th

August, 2012.

8. LIBRARY • The new entry is being accepted well, with access to additional carparks. There

have been some complaints that it is too far from the bus stop for those that don't drive, Manager Library Services suggested that the bus "parking bay" at

the new entry be transformed into a bus stop, however feedback from the bus services was that this would not be possible as there is no want for it. Manager Library Services believes it would be worth while.

• A new path has been put in from the bottom path (Leichhardt Terrace) up through to the ramps for easier access for disabled people.

• The RFID system is working well. The Self Loan Stations are popular with most patrons.

• The new customer service desk and computer desks have been installed for the new layout.

• The Library will be closed to be recarpeted and painted from 29 th October, 2012, re-opening on 2 nd November, 2012. The Library will hold an official re-opening party on Monday 5th November, 2012.

This report provides an update of current projects, programs and events of the Community Development Unit

COMMUNITY PROJECTS OFFICER — FRAN STOOPS

1. NIGHT MARKETS • First Night Market went well. Several cancellations and a few no shows. Fifty-

eight stalls plus another six which included aboriginal artists on the lawns. A total of sixty four stalls. A good turn out until it got too cold when it quietened down. Positive feedback re crowd and musicians.

• September 13 markets: 76 stalls at present. Music from Lacuna Style, Lucy & the Diamonds, John & Tree Collective, The Ltyentye Apurte Drummers.

• Updated public liability blanket cover insurance OAMPS. • Marketing — poster distribution. • General enquiries.

2. CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL I TREE • Stallholders at present 80. Site availability is now limited to sites for

stallholders with 1 table. • Progressing well — all on track and everything that needs to be confirmed is

for both Carnival and Tree. • In discussions with performers for roving and kids area. • Marketing & Media in progress. • Met with Library to discuss 'Switching on the Lights' competition. Library will

be promoting this.

3. ALICE DESERT FESTIVAL • Ongoing consultation for various events, installations etc. • Festival opening held under the Sails on Friday, 10 August at 5.30pm went

well with the first of their Dancing in the Streets production. Up to 50 people participated.

• Anzac Oval has had several site inspections. Time confirmed to meet with ADF to pick up in kind infrastructure.

• Met with coordinator for Cinema by the River to be held September 29 & 30.

4. GENERAL COMMUNITY EVENTS • Ongoing consultation to the following:

COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER — MITCH CAMERON

1. SENIORS 50 Plus Centre Management Committee • The Committee had meetings on 7th August and 21 61 August. The Committee

had a presentation from Community Bank- Bendigo Bank on 21 st August in regards to setting up an appropriate bank account for the Committee.

Seniors Coordinating Committee • A meeting of the Seniors Coordinating Committee was held on 15th August

the Andy McNeill Room. The next scheduled meeting will be held in the Andy McNeill Room on September 19. Guest speaker at this , meeting will be Katie Cooper, General Manager of Alice Springs Airport.

Seniors Month • 'Still Got Talent' - Seniors Talent Quest was held on Friday 24th August and

was a great success. The Talent Quest had an attendance of 70 + people. 12 different acts performed at the event and included singing, acts, poems recitals. Winners were: 1 st Place went to Mandy Webb & Gloria Robbins — The Ruined Maid' Act/ Poem. 2nd Place — U3A Literature Group — 'Warning' — Act/ Poem 3rd Place — lain Campbell - Poems.

Judges for the event were Graham Kilian, Ann Wilson & Leon Tripp. • CDO received a lot of positive feedback from participants & spectators

towards the event becoming an annual event.

The Mayoral Morning Tea during Seniors Month • Was held on Friday 10th August in the Council Function Room. • Healthy Communities Coordinator Lucinda Coobs & the YMCA's Jess

Karisson provided a demonstration Heart moves class. • Catering was provided by Kungas Can Cook.-The Morning Tea was attended

by 50+ people.

2. YOUTH YSAS • CDO attended YSAS meeting held on 15 th August at Alice Springs Youth Hub.

Youth Council • CDO attended Youth Council meetings held on 7th August & 23 rd August. • The Council is currently made up of 6 students from a variety of Alice Springs

schools.

3. CDU SCHOLARSHIP • CDO and Mayor Damien Ryan had a Panel Meeting on 10 th August to decide

upon the Semester 2 round of the Alice Springs Town Council/ CDU Scholarship.

• 2 applicants were deemed appropriate to be awarded the Scholarship.

4. MAYORAL AWARDS • The launch for the 2012 Mayoral Awards will be held at Acacia Hill School on

September 6 at 9am during the School Assembly. • Katherine Reed will be the Guest Speaker at the Launch. • The Information Pack has been updated and will be uploaded to the Council

website on the launch date. • The Awards Ceremony will be held on the International Day of Persons with a

Disability on Monday December 3 rd .

5. ACCESS ADVISORY COMMITTEE • CDO attended the Access Advisory Committee Meeting held on August 28 th

and updated on the progress of the Mobility Map.

6. HEALTHY COMMUNITIES INTIATIVE • CDO has provided administrative support to the Healthy Communities

Initiative including Newsletter & PowerPoint presentation 'design.

7. OTHER • Led Heart Foundation walking sessions on 11 th August, 25th August. • NTCOSS Interagency Meeting held on 15 TH August. • CDO completed Memoriam for Russell 'Bear' Ward. • Liaising with organisers of the NT Young Achiever Awards Launch to be held

on September 20 in the Andy McNeill Room. • CDO assisted at Allied Health presentation on 31 st August.

HEALTHY COMMUNITIES COORDINATOR (HCI) — LUCINDA COOBS

1. STAFF EXERCISE CLASSES • Staff members from Alice Springs Town Council are participating in exercises

classes at the Civic Centre - and Depot on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes include a variety of fitness components including strength, balance, flexibility, endurance and cardiovascular fitness.

• Due to the success of the Depot classes, an additional equipment purchase was made by HCC to support the classes.

2. CASA LEISURE — AQUATIC PROGRAMS • HCC met with CASA Leisure Aquatics Manager Nyen Andrews to discuss

future Aquatics program opportunities. • HCI has agreed to fund two CASA Leisure staff members to complete their

Aquatic Instruction Accreditation.

3. WOMEN'S CRICKET FITNESS • HCC met with Phil Lovell from Cricket NT to discuss a program similar to the

AFL Women's Footy Fitness, but utilising cricket skills. Cricket NT may partner with HCI in November 2012 to deliver this program to women of all ages and fitness levels.

4. SENIORS MORNING TEA • HCC and Jess Karlsson (YMCA Health & Wellness Director) delivered a

Heartmoves exercise demonstration at Seniors Morning Tea on 10 th August 2012.

5. HEART FOUNDATION WALKING & HEALTHY BREAKFASTS • The HCI Heart Foundation Walking group is maintaining average participation

of 28 per week. On Saturday 11 th August we held a Healthy Breakfast after the walk.

6. LIFT FOR LIFE • There are now thirteen Lift for Life programs currently delivered in Alice

Springs. • Health Outcomes for the first six months has seen signification improvements

in participants. These health outcomes include; decreased waist circumference, decreased blood pressure, increased strength, increased stamina, decreased blood glucose levels, increased cardiovascular fitness and improved balance and flexibility.

• HCC had a teleconference with Fitness Australia Manager and Program Coordinator on 22nd August to discuss sustainability of the Lift for Life program after the funding period.

7. HEARTMOVES • Heartmoves class numbers are constantly increasing with people of all ages

and abilities engaging in regular exercise. • The Indigenous Heartmoves program was trialled for a three month period at

the Gap Youth Centre. Participants from this program now have the opportunity to integrate into mainstream Heartmoves programs.

8. PROGRAM REVIEWS • The HCC has been attending a sample of the HCI classes to review

instructors and gather feedback from participants about the likelihood of ongoing participation in regular exercise after the completion of the Lift for Life program.

9. PUBLIC HEALTH FORUM • HCC and Mitch Cameron conducted a presentation on the Healthy

Communities Initiative to Allied Health Professionals at the Public Health forum on Friday 31s t August 2012.

10. PARTICIPATION

COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER — LEON TRIPP

1. PUBLIC ART • Elliat Rich is in the process or resolving the surface texture/pattern for the 1.5

metre entry path to the new Library entrance. The design is being modified to enable construction within a tight installation timeframe. The original design included custom built tiles that will now be removed and the concrete path will be continuous from starts to finish.

2. HARTLEY STREET SCHOOL • All leases have been signed and tenants have been given Council contact

details for all maintenance needs. Brad Fullerton will conduct Condition Reports for Clarity NT and Tangentyere Design.

3. SCOPING STUDY INTO THE EARLY CHILDHOOD SUPPLY AND DEMAND NEEDS FOR ALICE SPRINGS • A letter of appreciation for the funding of the scoping study has been sent

through the Mayors office to the Minister for Early Childhood and Childcare Kate Ellis acknowledging the valuable contribution the scoping study has made towards alleviating the critical shortage of long day care places for the under twos. The letter requested that funding be made available for the expansion of two childcare centres, the YMCA's Sadadeen Rd complex and the Braitling Childcare Centre to create 30 new places for this cohort.

4. YOUTH COUNCIL • Two meetings have now been held with 6 students in the formation of a Youth

Council for ASTC. The Mayor attended the second meeting and a number of ideas have been tabled on how the group will function and what youth specific

issues will be actioned. The group will meet fortnightly and it is intended to build the membership to twelve participants. ,

5. FOUNDATION FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS • One Indigenous representative from the Foundation for Young Australians

IMPACT program which runs out of Centralian Senior College has joined the Youth Council.

6. NBN CO DISCOVERY TRUCK The visit planned for 10 September has been cancelled until further notice.

7. CENTRAL AUSTRALIAN ALCOHOL PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN • This campaign will continue to operate through the 2012/13 under the

auspices of the Drug and Alcohol Services Association (DASA). An acquittal of surplus fund from NT Police, Department of Justice and Alcohol and Drug Service Central Australia for the financial year ending 30 June 2012 is currently in progress. The surplus funds will be transferred to DASA and the CCDM will continue to sit on the steering committee through the current campaign.
