EXECUTIVE MESSAGE

Peter X. EngelPresident & CEO, Easterseals Southeast Wisconsin

Roger Schaus, Jr.Board Chair, Easterseals Southeast Wisconsin

Your support has impacted the lives of over 3,000 individuals in 2018 alone. With your help we were able to provide local families and individuals with programs and services essential for them to thrive in their communities. On behalf of our board, staff, and the individuals and families we serve, thank you.

THANK YOU

Dear Friend of Easterseals Southeast Wisconsin,

Within my first week of joining Easterseals Southeast Wisconsin in June of 2018, I attended several Project SEARCH completion ceremonies and our annual Walk With Me event at the Milwaukee County Zoo. I immediately knew that I joined a truly special organization.

This past year, we’ve started on a path towards sustainability, strength and relevance for those we serve. As CEO, I would like to give thanks to Roger Schaus, Jr., our Board Chair from 2017-2018, for his leadership and support. I also want to welcome Brett Engelking as our new 2019-2020 Board Chair and look forward to his leadership in helping us continue our mission to help those facing challenges in our community.

We are so proud of the Easterseals team and thankful for the volunteers, partners, supporters and donors. We are excited to share the impact of our work in 2018. A few highlights from the year include:

Our My Choice Family Care - Care Management Unit was ranked 4 out of 16 area CMUs on the annual MetaStar review.

Our Individual Placement and Support expanded to include youth in addition to adults. With the support of our Milwaukee and Washington County partners we are now able to support younger individuals experiencing mental health concerns and prepare them for employment or further education.

117 campers enjoyed the “All Things Wisconsin” themed Summer Respite Camp and our Recreation participants enjoyed a Candy Land themed prom in the spring.

Every week I write a note to our employees sharing success stories from our programs. While the above successes highlight the year, there are so many stories each week of how Easterseals impacts the lives of the people we serve every day. I am excited to share just a few of those stories and outcomes with you in this report.

We are incredibly grateful for your support and know that together, we truly can achieve our purpose: to change the way the world defines and views disabilities by making positive, profound differences in people’s lives every day.

86 cents of every dollar we receive goes to direct services, which is a significant impact on those we serve.

FOR CHILDRENSAFE BABIES HEALTHY FAMILIES SUMMER RESPITE CAMPS 585 PEOPLE SERVED IN CHILDRENS PROGRAMS IN 2018SAFE BABIES HEALTHY FAMILIES: JAMAL’S STORY

Safe Babies Healthy Families started working with Jamal and his family just a few days after he was born and met with them for the first time at the NICU at Waukesha Memorial after receiving the referral from a hospital social worker. Little Jamal was born 10 weeks early,

weighing just over 2 pounds. His lungs were not developed and he was having trouble feeding.

On top of fearing for their baby’s survival, Jenna had next to nothing prepared for the birth of the baby. Not only was Jamal born prematurely, Jenna had only known she was pregnant for a few weeks before he arrived. She had previously thought it was not physically possible for her to be pregnant based on her own health issues going on.

Through Safe Babies Healthy Families, Jenna received help with baby supplies, both through the Earn as You Learn store as well as resources in the community. A few emotional months later, Jamal was healthy enough to discharge from the NICU, and Jenna was setup to welcome her baby home.

By Jamal’s 2nd Birthday, he was a healthy, happy, active toddler who is considered BIG for his age! When it was time to review Jamal’s service plan, it was determined that he was exactly where he should be in all developmental domains! For his 2nd birthday, Jenna took Jamal to visit the NICU nurses who cared for Jamal during his first few months of life, they couldn’t believe how much he had grown from the little 2 pound baby they had remembered.

300+ families were served throughSafe Babies Healthy Families.

FOR ADULTS

ADULT DAY SERVICES: EARL’S STORY

Earl enrolled in our day program in May of 2017. When Earl started here he was anxious and would “visser,” meaning he was nervous and felt uncomfortable. He would talk about his past behaviors and incidents that happened to him frequently. He began working with a number of different staff and learned how to deal with his anxious feelings and how to appropriately let staff and peers know he is feeling anxious.

Earl learned how to give his peers, staff and community member’s personal space. He also learned appropriate conversation and the different levels of his community and who is appropriate to tell different stories to. With these skills that Earl learned at day program, he is now able to volunteer in the community once a week and go on a larger variety of community outings. He was even able to participate in the Tap the Potential Fashion Show! He has become more social and open to staff and his peers. Earl has also been willing to try new activities in the center and learn new skills. We are thrilled to see how far Earl has come!

FOR EMPLOYMENT

PROJECT SEARCH: GRAYSON’S STORY

Prior to starting Project SEARCH, Grayson had limited paid work experience and had struggled with maintaining attendance on the job. Grayson learned about Project SEARCH and decided to join because he was “very hopeful that this program would expand my career and job opportunities.” Additionally, he thought it would be a “great opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, and give me work experience that I never would have had otherwise.”

Project SEARCH staff have seen Grayson make great personal strides. He has demonstrated initiative and a great work ethic as a Project SEARCH intern. He is always the first individual to jump in and assist co-workers or peers with any tasks at hand, exudes self-confidence, and maintained a near perfect attendance record.

“Grayson is a friendly, outgoing individual who goes above and beyond what is expected of him. He is a fast learner, and is dedicated to his tasks. His

personality radiates through everything he does, and he leaves a lasting impression on everyone who has

the pleasure of working with him.” - Marcia Rupp, Manager of Volunteer Services

Those who have had the opportunity to work with Grayson throughout his time at Project SEARCH do not have to worry about saying goodbye. He is going to be a permanent member of the team, as he has been hired as a part-time employee by the Environmental Services department at Waukesha Memorial!
