SAFETY BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THIS EQUIPMENT, READ AND STUDY THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INFORMATION. IN ADDITION, MAKE SURE THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO OPERATES OR WORKS WITH THIS EQUIPMENT IS FAMILIAR WITH THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.

Our Company always takes the operator and their safety into consideration when designing machinery and guards exposed moving parts for their protection; however, some areas cannot be guarded or shielded in order to assure proper operation. In addition, the operator's manual and decals on the machine warn you of further danger and should be read and observed closely.

Please read the rules listed below for safe operation BEFORE you operate this equipment.

MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE

Work of any type on machinery is always more dangerous when the machine is operating. Unless otherwise expressly instructed to the contrary, BEFORE cleaning, adjusting, lubricating or servicing this unit, the following MANDATORY SAFETY SHUT-DOWN PROCEDURE should ALWAYS befollowed:

1. Disengage the tractor PTO.

2. Shut off tractor engine, remove key and take it with you.

3. Wait for all movement to stop.

4. Remove the Telescoping Drive and ALL Power con nections from the tractor.

ONLY when you have taken these precautions can you be sure it is safe to proceed. Failure to follow the above procedure could lead to death or serious bodily injury!

BE SURE that the Telescoping PTO Drive is securely attached to the tractor and Tedder shaft and that the Drive rotates freely inside the Telescoping Drive Shield Tubes!

DO NOT engage PTO Drive to Tedder when outer wings are folded or when removable tines are in transport position.

Flexible or Plastic-shielded Drive Tubes MUST be anchored to the draw-bar frame with the Tiedown Chain provided!

CHAPTER 5 OPERATION

TRANSPORT

The following procedure should be practiced when transporting the Tedder.

NOTE: The adjustable wheels should be placed in the rear position for transporting on highways.

MODEL 241

NOTE: Steps 1 and 2 will provide the minImum transport width for the Tedder. If your situation will tolerate the 10ft. machine width, the tine blades maybe left in place. In all cases follow step 3.

1. Activate PTO until the removable tine blades are to the outside.

2. Remove the three blades and store in brackets provided in back of draw-bar frame. See Figure 5-1.

3. Lift the Tedder front tines using Regulating Lever (A), Figure 5-3, until you have them even or slightly above the rear tines. The front tines must not contact the ground when transporting.

MODEL 242 AND 243

1. Lift the Tedder front tines using Regulating Lever (A), Figure 5-3, until you have them even with or slightly above the rear tines. The front tines must not contact the ground when transporting.

2. Disengage outer wheels on wings by unlatching handle (T), Figure 5-6.

3. Loosen handle (B), Figure 5-2 and rotate wings to the rear.

4. Lock in position with pin (C), Figure 5-2.

A CAUTION: Never engage PTO Drive to Tedder when outer wings are folded or when removable tines are in transport position.

OPERATING POSITION

MODEL 241

1. Adjust regulating handle (A), Figure 5-3, until the front tines slightly touch the working surface.

2. If the three blades were removed, replace them on their discs.

10

IMPLEMENT WHEEL REPOSITIONING

1. Locate handle (D), Figure 5-4.

2. Move handle down and pull away from spindle to unlock wheel shaft.

3. Place wheel to desired position and lock in place by repositioning handle (D).

FLUFFING (or TURNING)

Place the implement wheels to the rear and operate at a slow speed. The optional speed reduction gear box will be required. Windrows may be turned (Fluffed) without destroying the windrows.

TEDDING

Place the implement wheels forward and operate at the normal speed.

NOTE: For the best Tedding result, the wheels should be in the forward position, see Figure 5-4. Tedding may also be done with the wheels in the rearward position.

DIRECTIONAL SPREADING.

Lock the implement wheels either to the right or left, see last two illustrations on page 12, depending on the direction desired and operate at a normal speed.

TRACTOR HITCH ALIGNMENT (Figure 5-5)

NOTE: By design, this GEHL machine can only be properly hooked-up to a tractor which has PTO and hitch dimensions conforming to ASAE standard S203.

Position the tractor drawbar hitch hole centerline directly in line with the tractor PTO shaft.

The front and rear position of the tractor drawbar hitch hole centerline MUST be correct to insure the correct Universal Joint relationship. The tractor drawbar hitch hole should be 14" (355 mm) from the rear of the 540 RPM tractor PTO shaft.

NOTE: Be sure the PTO shaft is locked on tractor PTO, the PTO shield is anchored to the Tedder Frame and the PTO shaft turns freely inside of shield. See Figure Page 21.

OPERATING SPEED

The speed of the tines may be reduced by using an optional speed reduction box. This will allow you to reduce the speed of the tines from 170 RPM @ 540 PTO RPM to 68 RPM.

The spreading effect of the crops can be regulated by varying the PTO speed of the tractor.

Speeds vary based on crop conditions: Moisture content, density of crop and length of crop.

The following chart gives approximate speeds for a crop of average length and density.

First Time Over ....... 7 - 8 km/h (4-1/2 - 5 mph) (High moisture content)

Second Time Over.10 - 12 km/h (6-1/2 - 7-1/2 mph)

Dry Crop .... ,. " ............. Reduce PTO speed

Long, Heavy and Wet Crop ..... , Reduce forward speed, increase PTO speed

If the Universal Drive Shaft has to be angled excessively, stop the tractor PTO shaft.

OPERATING PATTERNS

Refer to illustrations at right for operating patterns.

TINE POSITION ADJUSTMENT

The tines may be placed in two positions. The forward (aggressive) or retarded (less aggressive) position is determined by the assembly position of clip (U), Figure 7-12, Page 17. When Tedding, place tines in the forward position. When Raking, Fluffing or Turning place tines in the retard position. See Figure 7-13, Page 17.

Shields may be removed by removing the screw (ref. #8 page 32) and rotating the Tube Shield (#11 or 13) while holding the Cone Shield (#7) still and aligning notches in Cone Shield and Tube Shield. Then pull off the Tube Shield Assembly.

3. Attach the Clutch End of the PTO Shaft to the Tedder PTO Input Shaft. Locate the Guard Chain and install "S" hook into PTO Shield and secure PTO Shield to Tedder Frame.

4. Attach the Push Button Lock End of the PTO Shaft to the Tractor PTO Shaft.
