roots, sod or other perishable materials in any embankment. Do not place any stone or masonry fragment greater than 4 inches in
any dimension within the embankment.
Compact the embankment to a density of at least 95 percent of maximum density as determined according to ASTM D 1557. The
contractor shall employ a qualified independent testing agency to check density according to ASTM D 2922 or ASTM D 1556.
During compaction, maintain the moisture content of embankment or subgrade material within ±2 percent of the optimum moisture
content as determined according to ASTM D 2216. Compact each lift as required before depositing material for the next lift.
Place fill in maximum 8" lifts. Provide compaction equipment that will satisfy the density requirements at all times.
TRENCH BACKFILL
All trenches under sidewalks, pavement, buildings and other structural improvements shall be filled to the grade shown on the
plans using granular backfill (B Borrow) conforming to the requirements of Section 211 of the Standard Specifications. Place the
backfill material in 6-inch lifts and ensure the backfill is compacted to not less than 95 percent of the maximum density as
determined according to ASTM D 1557. Contractor shall employ a qualified independent testing agency to check density
according to ASTM D 2922 or ASTM D 1556.
Trenches located in lawn or landscaped areas may be backfilled using excavated materials. The excavated soil shall be placed in
6" lifts and compacted to prevent settlement.
TOPSOIL
The contractor shall place stripped topsoil approximately 4" deep over lawn and landscaped areas as shown on the plan sheets.
This material shall be topsoil that is free of stones 1 inch or greater in overall dimensions, refuse, stumps, roots, brush, weeds,
and other material that prevent the formation of a suitable seed bed.
