Patriot’s Malcolm Mitchell and his Book Club

Malcolm Mitchell, drafted by the Patriots in 2016, has an

interesting story about how he joined book club. Not only does play great football, but Malcolm Mitchell loves books. He recognized in college that he needed to become a better reader and actively sought out a way to make that happen. Watch this story—it’ll make you feel good about life. And it might also inspire you to read, or possibly, join a book club.

Huskie Celebrity Reader

Mr. Meinert Honors Chemistry & AP

Chemistry 1. What was your favorite book when you were a teenager and why? As a kid I was a huge Hardy Boys fan. I read a lot of Agatha Christie

too. I loved the mystery novel genre. Mostly I read the World Book Encyclopedia and National Geographic. I continued doing that through high school. I’d grab a volume of the encyclopedia each night (A-Z… didn’t matter) and just read the entries. The encyclopedia taught me things that I never imagined, and National Geographic took me places that I could only dream about.

2. What is one book by a science-based author that you think everyone should read? It would have to be “The Discoverers” by Daniel Boorstin – a marvelous description of man’s journey to know his world. Bill Bryson’s “A Short History of Nearly Everything,” and Marc Reisner’s “Cadillac Desert,” run a close second and third.

3. If you could have dinner with one author, who would it be and why? What would you want to ask that person? Or what would you want to talk about? I’d have dinner with Mark Twain. He’s the entertaining, well-traveled, humorous writer that I would like to be. We would discuss his travels and observations about the world. I’d especially love to get more details about his trip across the country by stagecoach in “Roughing It” – just a few years before there was a transcontinental railroad. I have an original copy.

4. What's on your bedside table waiting to get read right now? “The Gates of Rome” – the first in the Emperor series by Conn Iggulden. I love ancient history. Also “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Victor Hugo is my favorite author that I love and tolerate in equal measure.

5. What is one book you think every person should read before they die? The World Book Encyclopedia. Learn as much about everything until the day you kick.

6. One funny thing we don't know about Mr. Meinert…? I’m not that funny. Ask my students. But something you may not know is that I’ve been writing in a journal since 1984.
