Right-hander Billy Buckner gets the nod for Reno, opposite Tacoma righty Joe Wieland. Yesterday’s Game: Mitch Haniger belted a grand slam to give Reno a five-run lead, but the Rainiers scored six runs over the final three innings – including four in the ninth – to beat the Aces, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium. Seeking his 31st save of the season, Aces closer Jimmie Sherfy walked two of the first three batters he faced to set up Tacoma’s final rally. Nori Aoki and Mike Freeman clubbed back-to-back singles to make it 7-5. Stefen Romero then brought the Rainiers within one run on a sacrifice fly to center, before Rob Brantly capped Tacoma’s ninth walk-off victory with a two-run double to the gap in right-center. Tacoma grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out, two-run shot by Freeman. Reno responded in the fifth with a pair of runs on three hits and an error, leveling the score at 2-2. Two frames later, the Aces erupted for five runs against Sam Gaviglio and Kraig Sitton. Carlos Rivero opened the seventh with his career-high 18th home run. Later in the inning, Haniger’s grand slam sailed inside the left-field foul pole, giving Reno a 7-2 advantage. The grand slam was the second of Haniger’s career with the first coming on August 20, 2014, in the Arizona League. The Rainiers plated two runs after the stretch against Steve Hathaway, highlighted by a run-scoring double off the bat of Daniel Robertson. Former Aces reliever Kevin Munson (2-1) got the win for Tacoma with two perfect innings in relief, while Freeman led the Rainiers’ offense with four hits and three RBI. Sherfy (1-4) was tagged with his third blown save of the year in the loss. Joe Wieland: 26-year-old Joe Wieland starts for the Rainiers today in game four of the series. The right-hander is 13-6 with a 5.54 ERA (73 ER/118.2 IP) in 25 games (22 starts) with Tacoma this season. Wieland also made his Mari- ners debut this year, taking the loss on August 12 at Oakland after allowing six earned runs on nine hits over 5.0 frames. He has made three lifetime starts against the Aces, going 1-2 with an 8.56 ERA (13 ER/13.2 IP) and 13 strikeouts. In 142 games (130 starts) through his minor league career, Wieland owns a 58-33 record and a 3.86 ERA with 645 strikeouts over 709.0 innings. In 12 career MLB games (10 starts), he is 1-6 with a 6.32 ERA in 52.2 innings. The Texas Rangers originally selected Wieland in the fourth round of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Bishop Manogue High School in Reno. While at Manogue, Wieland was named Nevada State Player of the Year by the Reno Gazette Journal and the Las Vegas Review Journal. Walked Off: Tacoma dealt the Aces their fourth walk-off loss of the season yesterday, dropping Reno to 5-4 in walk-off situations in 2016. Entering the final day of the season, the nine total walk-offs this year are tied with the 2013 squad (5-4) for the second-fewest such games in a season in team history. During the Aces’ inaugural 2009 campaign, they were a part of just seven walk-offs, going 4-3 in those games. Conversely, the 2011 team saw 19 walk-offs, posting a 9-10 mark that ties the 2015 squad (5-10) for the most walk-off losses. Breakout Continues: The Aces offense scored seven runs for the second consecutive game yesterday, and nearly matched its output from last Sun- day thru Friday in just two days. In going 2-4 over six contests before Saturday, Reno had totaled just 15 runs (2.5 rpg). The Incomparable Ildemaro: Ildemaro Vargas collected three of Reno’s eight hits on Sunday, giving him eight knocks through the first three games of the series. In 48 Triple-A games since July 17, the Venezuela native has racked up 69 hits to lead all of professional baseball. Vargas’ .356 average (69-for-194) is 80 points higher than the .276 mark (89-for- 323) he posted in 83 games with Mobile. Rohlfing Rolls On: Returning to the lineup after two games off, Dan Rohlfing went 1-for-4 on Sunday to extend his career-best hitting streak to 12 games dating back to August 14. The Missouri native is batting .444 (20-for-45) over that span to raise his season average by 78 points from .211 to .289. It’s Grand Salami Time: Mitch Haniger’s seventh-inning grand slam yesterday was the Aces’ sixth bases-loaded home run this season, tying the 2009 club for the second most slams in a season in team history (2012 - 8). Winning in Washington: The Aces won three of four games during their first trip to Tacoma back in June before taking two of the first three games of this series. In going 38-25 all-time in road games against the Rainiers, Reno has posted a losing record at Cheney Stadium in just one season in franchise history, dropping five of eight games in 2012. Jensen Gets the Call: Kyle Jensen was selected by Arizona before Saturday’s game, marking his first career promotion to the Major Leagues. In 133 games with Reno this season, the All-PCL performer batted .289 (144-for-498) with 30 home runs, 2 triples, 34 doubles, 120 RBI, 77 runs scored and 1 stolen base. The California native has set the Diamond- backs Triple-A single-season record for RBI, and is tied with Ernie Young of the 1999 Tucson Sidewinders for the most home runs in a year by a member of Arizona’s top affiliate. In 966 career Minor League games dating back to 2009, Jensen has a .266 average (910-for-3,427) with 178 home runs, 15 triples, 200 doubles, 631 RBI, 502 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. PCL Manager of the Year: Nashville skipper Steve Scarsone was announced as the PCL Manager of the Year on Friday. He is in his fourth season with Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate, and his eighth year in the A’s system. The Sounds will record the franchise’s second-most wins in their 19-year PCL history, surpassed only by the 89 victories amassed in 2007, when Frank Kremblas was named PCL Manager of the Year. Nashville has seen 178 transactions on the year, with 60 different players appearing on the team’s roster. PCL Most Valuable Player: El Paso outfielder Hunter Renfroe was named the PCL MVP on Thursday, the fourth San Diego Padres’ farmhand to take home the award and first since Sandy Alomar Jr. did so in 1989 with the Las Vegas Stars. The slugger is currently batting .306 with 29 homers and 104 RBI, to go along with 34 doubles, 5 triples, 94 runs scored, 22 walks, a .337 OBP and .896 OPS. Reno’s Kyle Jensen finished as the runner-up, despite being the fourth player in the PCL since 1993 to post 120-plus RBI in a single season. PCL Pitcher of the Year: Fresno’s Brady Rodgers was voted as the PCL’s Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday. Through 22 starts, he went 12-4 with a 2.86 ERA over 132.0 innings, including 116 strikeouts against 23 walks. From May 21-August 10 spanning 12 starts, he won 11 consecutive decisions. PCL Rookie of the Year: El Paso’s Carlos Asuaje was named the PCL Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. The second base- man is batting .325 (169-for-520) with 31 doubles, 11 triples, seven homers, 66 RBI and 95 runs scored in 130 games. All-PCL Team Announced: Kyle Jensen was selected as the first baseman to the All-PCL Team, announced by the league on Monday. He owns the home run, RBI and total bases single-season records for Reno while becoming the 12th player in franchise history to be named to the All-PCL Team. Today’s Starter: Right-hander Billy Buckner gets the nod at at Tacoma in the season finale. He signed with the D-backs as a minor league free agent on May 3, 2016, after spending the entire 2015 season with the Independent League Long Island Ducks where he went 8-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 18 games (11 starts). This year in 16 games (11 starts) for Mobile, the journeyman went 4-6 with a 3.22 ERA and 70 strikeouts over 72.2 innings. He pitched for the Aces in both 2009 and 2010, combining to go 12-4 with a 3.38 ERA (55 ER/146.1 IP). His 13 victories are tied for seventh all-time in Aces history. Through 44 games (24 starts) in the Majors -- which includes stints with the Royals, D-backs, Angels and Padres -- Buckner owns a 7-12 record and 6.02 ERA.

Last Outing: Buckner’s last start came on Wednesday at Sac-ramento, and he allowed four earned runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. A victory to-day would mark the 14th of his Aces career, and would move him past Jason Urquidez and Cesar Valdez on the all-time wins list and into a tie for sixth with Tony Barnette.

Against the Rainiers: Buckner has faced Tacoma 11 times in his career, including three starts in his time with Reno. He’s 5-3 with a 4.09 ERA (28 ER/61.2 IP) against the Rainiers, having al-lowed 72 hits (three home runs) and 19 walks with 59 strike-outs. His best start against the Rainiers came with the Aces on July 31, 2009, at Greater Nevada Field. He spun the first complete-game shutout of his career, scattering four hits and three walks with a career-high 12 strikeouts over 9.0 innings on 111 pitches, 76 for strikes.
