The legend of Dracula began with Bram Stoker’s novel in 1897 — as the old century gave

way to the new — and has lived on ever since. Immortalized in film and television,

spawning its own genre of storytelling by contemporary writers such as Anne Rice,

Charlaine Harris, Stephanie Meyer and Scotland’s national poet: Liz Lochhead, the vampire

myth has crossed genres from gothic thriller to campy horror and modern-day teen romance.

So, when you come to a production of Dracula… you never know what you’re going to get!

This adaptation remains true to the spirit of the original novel, but Clive and I have brought

a contemporary sensibility to highlight the mythology’s eternal relevance. Lochhead has

shifted her focus away from the monster who preys on human flesh and aimed it at the flesh

upon whom he preys. Dracula’s fearsome persona ignites passions buried within all of us,

and set within the moral restraints of Victorian society, presents us with the question …

would you invite him in? Stoker’s novel has come to be seen as an allegory — the vampire

as a metaphor for the evil of repressed human desires. When something is hidden within the

darkness of our own souls, it grows monstrous and uncontrollable, like Renfield ranting

from Bedlam asylum. When we face our fears, we shed light amid the dark, and stake the

heart of the perceived evil within us.

Amy Starkey ~ Director ~ Amy Starkey is a writer, actor and director who

previously directed Chapter Two for Deep Cove Stage and performed in Marion

Bridge, winning Best Actress at Mainstage this year! Other directing credits

include The Attic, The Pearls & Three Fine Girls in 2014, which won the Fraser

Valley Zone Festival awards for directing and outstanding production. She is

currently producing and directing her first screenplay, In Her View.

Clive Scarff ~ Assistant Director ~ Clive Scarff has been a director, writer,

editor and cameraman over the past 35 years. His theatrical directorial debut

was when he directed the first student-written play in his high school’s drama

festival. Since then he has directed several plays, live variety shows, over a

hundred commercials, several award shows including the Gemini Awards,

featurettes for CTV Olympic coverage and even a fishing show for CBC.

Alina Quarin ~ Lucy Westermann ~ Alina attended Capilano University’s

Musical Theatre program, and is currently taking Arts & Entertainment

Management. Credits include “Tricia” in A Chorus Line, “Kerrie Kowalski” in

The Awesome’80s Prom, “Iola Stover” in Parade, Ragtime: In Concert (FCP),

Cabaret (Exit 22 Productions), and The Who’s Tommy (Arbutus Studios.)

Dayna Schindell ~ Mina Westermann~ Making her DCSS debut, Dayna is

thrilled to play Mina in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. A dancer since age three,

Dayna caught the acting bug, pumping blood into several productions, recently:

The Government Inspector (United Players) and Mrs. Claus’s Kitchen (Famous

Artists/Presentation House). When not training and working in theatre and film,

Dayna loves going on adventures.

Karin Atkinson ~ Renfield ~ Karin Atkinson was bitten by the acting bug at a

young age where she performed theatre in Bragg Creek, AB. After graduating

from the University of Lethbridge in Drama and Psychology she moved to

Vancouver where she’s been a regular presence both onstage and off. Perhaps

you recognize her from PNE’s Fright Nights as “Really creepy dead girl.” Other

notable performances are The 39 Steps, Mary Mary and Comic Potential.

Zachary Fox ~ Dr. Arthur Seward ~ Zachary Fox is excited and honoured to be

a part of Deep Cove Stage Society’s production of Dracula. He is an actor, a

musician, and an artist. He moved to Vancouver recently from Kelowna to ply

his trade after getting representation from Boss Management. His stage credits

include Macduff in Macbeth, Dallas Winston in The Outsiders, and Ted in With

Bells On.

Steven Travis ~ Jonathan Harker ~ Steve is exceptionally tired and hungry

most of the time, given his tall stature. He is secretly obsessed with books of a

certain genre. The guitar has been his passion since he was six years old, and

for the past few years he has been taking acting classes at night.

BiosJamé Wonacott ~ Florrie Hathersage ~ Jamé Wonacott has been in many plays

in her home town, including Pack of Lies and Stereotype High. She has recently

been accepted to Capilano University’s Acting for Stage and Screen program

and is excited to work with the wonderful cast and crew of Dracula in her first

play living in Vancouver.

Hayden Ashford Clewes ~ Dracula ~ Hayden Ashford Clewes is a theatrical

actor, playwright and musical writer. Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,

Hayden is trained in operatic baritone specialized for musical theatre. Credits

include Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors, M. Thenardier in Les

Miserables, Jacob Marley in A Christmas Carol: The Musical.

Pamela Balint ~ Dr. Van Helsing/Dr. Goldman ~ Pamela is thrilled to perform

her debut to Vancouver’s stage in beautiful Deep Cove. Passionate about acting,

singing, dancing and life, she loves to learn and co-create with other artists. She

thanks the many talented and inspiring teachers who have guided her along the

way; and the incredibly supportive and humour-infused cast and crew of

Dracula. Her ancestry hails from Transylvania...just saying...

Sam Fraser ~ Grice ~ Sam Fraser is an actor, author, and occasional YouTuber.

His formal education is in English, so he has a lot of opinions about the book

being better. Stage credits include Hermes in Psychopomp and Circumstance,

Sam Hastings in A Cheeky Chateaubriand and a Dead Raccoon, and Daniel in

Almost, Maine.

Kevin Sloan ~ Nisbett ~ Kevin has been acting all over the lower mainland

since 2001. This is his second production for Deep Cove Stage Society, the last

being Shady Business in 2012. He is happy to be playing the “nice” nurse in

this very interesting version of the infamous Dracula! Kevin enjoys acting a

great deal and is grateful to have met and worked with such a talented cast.

Enjoy the show!

Kathleen Newton ~ Drinkwater ~ Kathleen Newton stepped on to a stage

when she was thirteen years old and never looked back. Since then she has been

involved in numerous plays and short films as an actor, writer, and director.

While her work has crossed many genres, her passion lies with the dark and

fantastical. Naturally, she is thrilled to have been given the opportunity to work

with Amy and the Deep Cove Stage Society on their production of Dracula.
