2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT June 2012

Welcome to winter! Our recent weather has not been conducive to motoring events and consequently this has been a relatively quiet time in NARC’s annual calendar. Several members, however, took advantage of the beautiful day to join the Laura Folk Fair parade and to display their vehicles afterwards. Thank you to those members. The Port Pirie day was greatly enjoyed by all present, with the Nyrstar smelter tour, lunch at the Burgess’ restaurant and the RSL museum all ranking as highlights. As usual, the time to talk with fellow members over lunch was well used! Jim Puust’s talk on his employer Wurth at our May meeting was an eye-opener to all. Little did we realize we have such a vast resource available to us and such an ingenious range of unique tools to carry out those seemingly impossible tasks. Wurth.com.au has a full on-line catalogue- that’s your homework assignment this month. NARC has (finally) received the official final draft of the revised Conditional Registration rules which will apply from 1st July 2012. While still not perfectly clear as to the frequency of required vehicle inspections by designated club inspectors and/or statutory declarations, there is only one key change which may affect some members. If you have cars built within the time frame of 1st January 1979 up to 31st December 1982, and you want to place those cars on the historic register, you must register them before June 30th 2012. They will then be able to remain as historic vehicles. This is a one-off concession for these vehicles, and NARC will accept them on our club register. From 1st July 2012, only vehicles manufactured prior to 1st January 1979 will qualify for conditional registration. This year’s Bay to Birdwood run is definitely going to take place on Sunday 30th September, despite rumours to the contrary. The major change from previous B2B’s is that SAPOL, while still supporting the event, will not be closing the road for one-way traffic between Teatree Gully and Birdwood, as has been done on all previous runs. While there are many arguments against this decision, the Federation (as one of the organizing partners) has chosen not to support lobbying action to the Minister as proposed by some clubs. The official Federation line is that if entry costs had to increase to cover the costs of road closure, the event’s future would be in doubt. Member clubs are asked to only provide “realistic, positive and financial viable solutions”. NARC welcomes any suggestions towards this end. Next month’s meeting is our Annual General Meeting. NARC has been fortunate in historically having a smooth-running executive committee and we want this to continue! Please think about what you can bring to the ongoing success of NARC and consider joining the management team. New ideas are always welcome and you will be well supported by the wealth of experience of current members. Safe Motoring John Birrell New Members NARC welcomes Alex Ryan of Clare who has a XB Falcon Fairmont. and Steve & Robyn Hyde of Crystal Brook who have FX & FJ Holdens

CHAPTER CHATTER

Good News is Ray Edwards’ Prefect is back on the road with considerable help from Brian O’Loughlin.

Lots of fun with un-marked timing gears. Brian Haines entered a chance to win a model car from Australian Classic Car Magazine, AND WON!

The high quality model of a 1976 2 door Ford Falcon hardtop is now on display at home. Possibly a $150 value.

Kapunda Swap Meet filled two rows around the trotting track. More sellers would have fitted in if parking marshals had been on duty. Buyers were consistent all morning. Rain held off and the sun finally shone through.

September 1st Old Car Day is coming up. No set plans yet for that. Personally I have been busy with Work Shop upgrade and thanks to Terry Rule helping I cemented toilet

floors etc. on a cold miserable day, despite my atrocious head cold. Marvellous what a difference a bit of help makes.

The Chapter has some FM Radios for communicating on runs thanks to a donation from Geoff Fahlbusch and Grant Campbell preparing user guides for simple operation. All modern electronic devices seem to have too many options. This should prevent the need to travel close and annoy other road users. Many thanks chaps.

An interesting outing to Chaos Manor (Duncan's) recently. Saw old tractors having a field day. This was to be an Armstrong Siddeley outing but perhaps old tractors were more reliable! Brian Woodcock paddock tested a couple of machines. Duncan did an incredible job cleaning up for the day.

A COUNTRYMAN’S RUN IN THE COUNTRY 5 VIRGINIA NURSERY 15/5/12

I am a 1954 Austin A30 Countryman, (that is a station wagon). I’ve not been out much of late so I was very excited as we set off from Eudunda down the hills to Kapunda. A30’s actually go quite well down hill!

At Hill Street, Kapunda, our usual meeting point, I found myself being the only old car there. Fortunately there was a Ford Probe for company and I must admit they sure have very clean body lines. (Must have been styled by one person, not a committee of salesmen). I soon got used to the idea of not having other historic cars about me. A local farmer then rocked up dressed far too well to be just buying parts; he too was in a modern car. Next car to arrive was a tidy Mercedes driven by a chap I am sure I normally see driving a white Falcon ute.

By now it was time to depart and I the Countryman was appropriately setting the pace, or lack of, despite the down hill run toward Gawler. I felt proud up front and enjoyed the beautiful warm day. Few other cars bothered to pass me. I was thrilled to see another Austin an A95 Westminster) patiently waiting at Willaston to join us. This was driven by a quite senior member of the Chapter, an amiable chap with quite a sense of humour, but more importantly still has all his marbles and I will maintain that view until he talks about selling that fine machine he currently drives.

From there we made our way along “Rann’s Pride” the Northern Expressway to check whether that part of the road had developed corrugations like various other sections have. Nearing Angle Vale we left the Expressway. Although I was busy making sure I stayed safely on the left side of the road for my master, I noted trenches being dug for more buildings, exposing the lovely fertile Gawler River loan, once more valued for market gardens than housing. Further on plants were being irrigated with arches of sprays of water, highlighted by the sunlight as they crossed each other. The sprays rotated and fanned out, cascading to gently nurture the plants below. A small bump in the road and I was jolted back to where I was supposed to be going and was I leaving a trail of oil as British cars do. I know I should have a disposable sump napkin fitted before I leave home, but my master is usually a last minute sort of operator and if they were available it would not happen.

Perhaps because it was between plantings some fields were bare, making mounds of dirt and rubbish stand out. Large heaps are surely destined to be archaeological digs in years to come. Market gardeners must think them to be giant compost mounds. Being flat terrain they cannot make use of creek beds like some cereal farmers. I was washed and chamoised off before I ventured out and was concerned I may be collecting dirt on my shiny blue Acrylic paint and chrome.

Before I knew it I needed to lose some pace for a left turn to the nursery. At the car part I felt my oil pressure rise, sighting a Simca station wagon, another club member, another historic friend. In no time all our passengers alighted, leaving us car beings to sit, rest, and test car aromas and temperatures. It proved to be a moment, no more, because we had all travelled quietly and legally, quite leisurely really. Being left in the car park I cannot report on the goings on by Chapter Members inside the nursery. It was quite a long wait into the afternoon before people and many plants emerged back at the cars. They must have had lunch but I didn’t even get a check of my radiator before my motor was being fired up and I was pointed back to Gawler before delivering the plants etc. back to Eudunda. Visit to Kapunda

Arriving at Kapunda on Tuesday afternoon I had been invited for dinner by Deanna and

Brian Haines where we were joined by Dale and Dianne Palamountain. It was a great get-together, a most enjoyable meal and caught up on interesting history.

Anzac morning the sun was shining when members enjoyed morning tea in the beautifully set out Dutton Park Memorial Garden. Special Anzac biscuits were made by Jean Burns, plenty for everyone.

Our route for the drive was well planned, each received a map. Travelled through Greenock, Nuriootpa, Tanunda, and Lyndoch to Williamstown. The scenery was spectacular with many trees in autumn colours. Bakehouse Tavern did a great job serving up tasty lunches and there was plenty of catching up and chatter.

I then followed Deanna and Brian back to Kapunda on an alternative scenic route. I enjoyed my visit and thanks all the Kapunda members for their friendship and hospitality. Moranne Coombs.

Thank you Ray and Jean for organising it and look forward to next year. The photos show Jean and her biscuits and 2 cars having an inaugural run with the club:- Tony's Rover and Brian's Citroen. 7 FUN IN THE SUN

On Sunday April 15th we had a Shed Day in Port Pirie. The first activity was a tour of Nyrstar - beginning with an introductory film at the Tourist Centre

then after boarding a bus and proceeding to the Smelter there was a guided tour of the plant - all this took about one and a half hours.

Five people didn’t take part in the tour - Graham and Marie had been before, John was delayed because of a callout by SES to attend a car accident and we were late because Brian had an early commitment at the Laura Folk Fair.

When the main group arrived at the Burgess home the BBQ cooking began while people wandered into the outside room where Graham has his motorbikes displayed. We sat outside under shelter, an ideal spot for us all to gather and talk, then eat the very tasty meal prepared for us by Marie and Graham. The day proved to be quite warm by midday but the chatter didn’t suffer - an enjoyable time was spent until it was time to move on to the next place.

This was the RSL Military Museum which was an excellent display, well set out, interesting and informative - well worth the time we spent there. Local RSL members spend voluntary time looking after the Museum and the whole area is a Lunch time credit to them.

At the end of this visit we all made our way home. There were 21 members today with 1 adult and 1 child joining in with us as visitors, they were

John’s son and grandson from Adelaide. Thank you to Marie, Graham and NARC for this great day.

Eleanore Beyer.

8 Murray Bridge Auto Restorers 40th Birthday

A few months ago Jim received an invitation from the

Auto Restorers Club of Murray Bridge to attend their 40th birthday celebration. As a past member of this club Jim thought that we should attend and join in the celebrations. We also decided that this would give us a chance to stay and check out the Avoca Dell Caravan Park before the 2013 National Rally.

After a trip to Adelaide to pick up the Prefect where we had it stored we travelled up to Murray Bridge in the rain arriving mid afternoon. After booking in to Avoca Dell and catching up with the owner Gavin Doecke whom Jim has known for over 30 years we had a walk around the park and spoke to Gavin about a few logistical issues that needed clearing up before the National rally. We were very pleased with what we saw, the parking that would be available for trailers and are convinced that it will be an ideal spot for those that are booked in there for the 2013 rally.

It was a 70’s theme for the Birthday celebration dinner, however when Jim was dressed I was convinced that it was a bad taste theme!! We had received welcome news during the week when Barb & Brian Bartholomew had rung us to let us know that they had been able to get tickets for the dinner as well and would be joining us. Arriving at the Murray Bridge Golf Club it was like we stepped back in time as there was a plethora of mullets, afro’s, flared pants and miniskirts.

Barb & Brian were already at the Golf Club when we arrived so had saved a spot for us which we were very grateful of as we found the venue packed. We found out that there were over 180 people attending the night so once again it would be a good chance to see whether the Golf Club would be suitable for our Rally Dinner. They passed with flying colours with all 180 people being served a lovely roast meal within 30 minutes. We had a fantastic night catching up with people we hadn’t seen in over 15 years. I made a comment at one stage that there were a lot of people that had got a lot older than what I remembered. Jim just looked at me and laughed and said of course I hadn’t aged at all haha. During the evening they had a slide show going of old photos and I nearly died when I saw a picture of a very young and clean shaven Jim and myself – I couldn’t believe we ever looked that young and I had almost forgot what Jim looked like without a beard.

On Sunday morning we picked up Barb & Brian as they were joining us for the day. Meeting at the Murray Bridge Clubrooms we headed to Mannum for morning tea. After morning tea we crossed the river on the ferries and headed back to the Murray Bridge Auto Restorers Clubrooms on the other side of the river. The vehicles were parked on the oval for a photo shoot while a BBQ lunch was served to entrants. Once again the local club fed over 180 people in a very short time, very impressive.

Late afternoon saw us head back to Barb & Brian’s for a cuppa and no sooner had we sat down when Phil & Sylvia dropped in on their way back from Phil’s houseboat at Mannum.

From Murray Bridge it was back to Adelaide to drop off “Blackie” until we needed her again for the next club run on the 13th May then back to Wallaroo.

All in all we had a very enjoyable weekend catching up with members of the Murray Bridge Restorers Club and helping them celebrate their 40th birthday. A special thanks to Barb & Brian for their friendship and company on the weekend as well.

Morris Register National Rally Easter long weekend, Port Pirie 9 By Malcolm Johncock

The Kapunda museum entered their 1927 Morris hearse and I entered the Morris Minor 1000. With a friend we transported the hearse to Port Pirie on a truck towing the Morris Minor on a trailer behind. A caravan behind the commodore completed the convoy. We travelled up on Good Friday missing the first day of the rally and the run to Gladstone gaol.

Saturday was a run to the Booleroo Centre Steam and Traction Society. We chose to travel in the Minor, going up via Laura and returning via Telowie Gorge. The Society at Booleroo society staged an impressive display for the rally participants. Lunch was served in the Football Club rooms and very nice. The starting techniques used over the years for various tractors were demonstrated. Some of the large engines were also started. An impressive collection.

Sunday was the display day on the Port Pirie Memorial oval. The hearse created a bit of interest but we had no firm enquiries. The cars on display were very well restored and presented. They ranged from vintage to the last models made by Leyland.

Sunday evening the rally dinner was held in the Northern Festival Centre for around 300 people. A large catering exercise but well done. The members of PADARC watched over the cars during dinner.

Monday was the rally wrap up and we motored home. Initially I had some reservations about Port Pirie as a venue but it worked out very well indeed with plenty of facilities and attractions and a nice setting with the backdrop of the Flinders Ranges. One of the criteria for a rally venue was the ability to seat 300 people in one sitting for the rally dinner.

Talking to a farmer entrant from around the Darling Downs he commented that he knew we grew a lot of wheat but he couldn't understand how as the country was so dry. We gave him a quick lesson in the seasonal cycles down here. I think he felt sorry for us not having 2 crops a year.

All in all a very enjoyable rally. The next Morris Registers National Rally will be held at Forbes NSW during Easter 2014. By Leon Darley

On Good Friday I picked up Michael Barry from Lealholme Nursing Home and took him to the Port Pirie oval, which was the rally headquarters. I had no camera so I asked Michael to take some photos for me of some of the cars. There were about 120 cars on display and nearly 150 people from all over Australia. Apart from a PADARC rally this would have to be the biggest number of vintage and classic cars ever to have visited Port Pirie. There were all kinds of Morris - Oxfords, Minors, Cowleys, Majors and even a Morris commercial hearse, 1927 model. There were several Wolseleys and Rileys and some MGs but no minis. Morris Cowley 1926

On Good Friday I caught up with Bill Watson who is a member of the Morris registrar but owns a 1948 MG sedan. Bill had some books on the history of the Bay to Birdwood runs from the first one to the last vintage one in 2010 and I bought a book from him.

On Sunday night members of the PADARC club acted as security guards keeping an eye on the cars while the owners attended the presentation dinner. There were 7 other members on the first shift with me and we were relieved at 8.30 by another 6 members who stayed at the Northern Festival Centre until about 10.30 that night.

It was a good rally and I saw some interesting cars. Morris Major 1933

10 Edithburgh Truck Rally 27th - 29th April 2012

As most people who know Jim well know he loves anything with more than 2 wheels and

an engine. They also know that apart from his love of little English Fords his other passion is his love of old trucks which makes interesting viewing in our sheds. He has been a member of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club of Australia for a number of years and with the formation of the South Australian Branch we have attended a number of their events.

The last weekend in April saw us heading to Edithburgh on the Yorke Peninsula for the annual HMVC Rally. Arriving at the beautiful seaside Edithburgh Caravan Park on Friday night to see the caravan park full of all types of commercial vehicles (mainly full size trucks) I commented to Jim that anyone that had planned a quiet weekend away at Edithburgh Caravan Park would be sadly disappointed. It was a quick unpack before we headed off to register and have a bbq tea at the local Football clubrooms. The organisers welcomed entrants and advised that they had been overwhelmed with the response and there were 68 entries and there would be over 70 trucks on the Saturday run.

Due to number of commercial vehicles that they had to get on the road it was an early morning on Saturday as the organisers wanted to be on the way by 8:15am. The convoy of trucks left Edithburgh on a beautiful sunny morning and headed through Coobowie to Yorketown where we stopped for a photo shoot at Yorketown Oval. It was here that the logistics of parking over 70 trucks became evident. The vehicles ranged from a 1925 Chrysler 70 truck to our 1985 Mitsubishi FK415 with all types in between. For example we had a 1934 WS 30cwt Bedford which had been driven over from Melbourne and lots of Macks, Commers, Internationals, Dodges, Fords and Kenworths.

From Yorketown after viewing an art gallery we headed to Point Turton for lunch. Once again it was a sight to see all of these trucks parked at the Point Turton Community Hall. From Point Turton the convoy headed off to Minlaton to view the Red Devil monoplane at the Harry Butler Memorial then off to a local farmer who has a collection of stationery engines and old tractors. His purpose built shed was jam packed full of engines and tractors but it was his junk pile of old trucks, cars and engines amongst the scrub that grabbed all the men’s attention. The convoy then headed back to Edithburgh for another bbq tea.

Sunday morning saw us congregate at a respectable 10:00am for a group photo before the convoy headed off to the Bublacowie Military Museum. This museum in the middle of nowhere is one man’s memorial to Australia’s involvement in all the major conflicts over the past 100 years. If you are ever visiting the Southern Yorke Peninsula it is well worth the visit.

After a roast lunch we continued looking through the museum and after saying our goodbyes headed towards home at about 3.30pm. Arriving home at about 5 o’clock both Jim and I declared that we had had a very enjoyable weekend.

Bev Puust

11 SOUTHERN YORKE PENISULAR COMMERICAL VEHICLES RALLY by Pam Stringer On April 27th -29th the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club of Australia –SA Branch had an event on the Southern Yorke Peninsula, the tour organizers were John and Pat Giles plus John and Nola Buttfield. The organizers had only catered and planned for a small group of vehicles but they ended up with 63 entries and double that figure with their partners or drivers. They had planned for the group to cook evening meals in the caravan park kitchen facilities but this was too small. So the football club rooms held our gatherings and local carrier, the Hart Brothers, paid the hire fee. This meant the two John’s families conveyed the people in their cars to the football club rooms for which we were most grateful.

Kelvin and I waited at Port Broughton to travel down the Yorke Peninsula to Edithburgh with David and Chris Kent at 2-00pm on Friday afternoon. We travelled down through Kadina, Moonta to Maitland but the road was so rough that poor Chris and I were shaken about in the trucks. We arrived at Edithburgh Caravan Park at 5-00pm – the caravan park is community run with paid managers so all the funds are put back into the community.

At the footy club rooms the atmosphere was terrific as everyone made the effort to communicate. While cooking our own meat on the barbecue, everyone was placed next to different company so had to make conversation. A chap from Mt Gambier gave us his rendition of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo by playing the bagpipes while cooking tea.

Next morning at 8-30am we left Edithburgh via Coobowie for Yorketown oval where we parked our vehicles for a display and to have our morning tea break. We next checked out Jacqui’s Gallery where a paddock gate was opened to fit more vehicles in. Dinner was at Port Turton where we all just fitted into the parking area. Then off to do some sight seeing at Hardwicke Bay, Brentwood and Minlaton where we gathered to see the Harry Butler Memorial building and the Red Devil aircraft. From Minlaton we went to Wallis and Dianne Jolley’s collection of vintage engines, tractors and signs etc. Returned to Edithburgh and to same venue for evening meal.

The longest entry was Tony Ryan’s 1979 Kenworth K124 -bogie prime mover tri axle tipping trailer, towing a tri axle tipping pig trailer. John Birrell’s 1974 Steyr-Puch Haflinger APT was the shortest and lightest vehicle entered. Eight NARC vehicles entered the Truck Rally. The vehicles ranged in age from early twenties to eighties.

Sunday a group photograph was taken at the caravan park, then in procession again, drove to Bublacowie Military Museum privately owned by Chris Soar. This display is open to the public on Sunday, Monday and Tuesdays or by appointment and is an excellent collection of all World Wars. He even had a German gun that was water operated that was used to fire at our Australian troopers at Gallipoli which caused the dreadful human loss. There was full list of the Australian Prisoners of War in Japan and also a full list of all the Australian National Service men whom attended Vietnam. Chris’s daughter and her husband from Brisbane cooked a 3 course meal for us all in military style. Kelvin and I headed off for home but the group went on to see an Alpaca Stud at Port Giles. Then they returned back to Edithburgh for an arranged tea by ‘The Garage Diner’ at the footy clubrooms.
