Sustainable Energy Skills Training

Renewable Energy Skills Training

At Carnegie College we recognise the tremendous opportunities for Fife and Scotland as our renewable energy sector goes through a phase of unprecedented growth and development. We support the Scottish Government’s view that education, skills and training for the sector are critical and that it is important for allied and supply chain organisations to invest in the training and skills of their workforce, both at technical and managerial levels.

Skills Training

As an established and leading provider of training and business education solutions, we understand the key to an organisation’s future success is a competent and skilled workforce. The challenge facing the renewable energy sector today is in ensuring the availability of workforce skilled and qualified personnel to take the industry forward and to guarantee long-term future growth and success.

In our College one of our strategic aims is to ‘Develop a portfolio of learning opportunities to meet the needs of our learners, employers and industry sectors’.

To achieve this aim, we work closely with employers to develop and deliver a qualifications portfolio to meet their current and future needs. Our new renewable energy courses are designed to address these needs. Our newest, and most industry targeted course, is accredited by City & Guilds, and developed under a Sector Skills Council alliance of Energy and Utility Skills, RenewableUK and Scottish Renewables, and has also involved us working in partnership with leading players in the industry. By listening to our industry associates we have been able to devise bespoke training programmes tailored to meet their particular individual requirements.

Our current mechanical/electrical portfolio for energy systems includes:

Modern Apprenticeship: Wind Turbine Service Technician (National UK pilot of the new qualification)

The Wind Turbine Service Technician Apprenticeship

Carnegie College is proud to be at the forefront of delivery for the wind energy industry’s first pilot ‘wind turbine service technician apprenticeship’ programme. The qualification is planned to be 3 years in duration and will provide the industry with the skilled technicians who are critical to meet the sector’s skills requirements. Focusing on electrical engineering for wind turbine operation and maintenance, the new Level 3 City & Guilds Apprenticeship aims to set the benchmark for training service technicians for the UK wind industry.

The content of the qualification has been set out by industry. A dozen companies from across the renewable energy sector have worked with Energy & Utility Skills and City & Guilds to build the programme. The development of the apprenticeship framework has been facilitated by RenewableUK, the trade association for wind and marine energy.

We are delighted to pioneer the delivery of the programme on behalf of two leading businesses in the renewable energy sector:

Siemens Wind Power UK and

REpower UK

The pilot programme is planned to commence in September 2010 with the first cohort of 14 apprentices starting their training at Carnegie College’s Engineering and Energy campus at Rosyth, Fife.

The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre

Established with a one million Canadian dollar endowment from Scots-born Canadian mining entrepreneur, Robert M Buchan, The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre* is a new energy research and development centre located within Carnegie College’s Rosyth campus. The investment in this new centre reflects the College’s commitment to developing the future skills and knowledge that will be required in order to secure long-term employment and sustainable economic growth in this important sector.

Carnegie’s Rosyth campus has already benefited from almost £1.5 million of investment over the last few years to further enhance the College’s delivery of the vocational skills needed for the expanding engineering and renewables sector. It now provides a total of 7,000 square metres of purpose-built training facilities, believed to be the largest and best equipped of its type in Scotland. The Whitlock Centre will be at the hub of the engineering campus, providing up to 1,000 square metres of dedicated space for the renewables sector, including a demonstration lab and exhibition area.

As well as providing opportunities for interactive laboratory demonstration facilities for emerging energy technologies, the centre will promote collaboration over learning and knowledge transfer between the key providers, consumers and developers of sustainable energy resources. The objective of collaboration will be ‘synergy through energy’. The centre will partner key organisations from the public and private sector, with a view to it becoming self-financing within a two to three year period.

Prospective partners will include Scottish universities and colleges with specialist expertise, Scottish Enterprise, energy providers, manufacturers of energy equipment, key energy consumers, energy-sector skills agencies in the UK and organisations set up to promote renewables energy such as Scottish Renewables and RenewableUK.

*Named by Robert Buchan in honour of Colin and the late Rene Whitlock of Limekilns who had a major influence on his life.

The Whitlock Energy Collaboration Centre and working with Carnegie - our partners say:

This is a fantastic development that could not have come at a better time with employers

across the sector identifying a need for high quality training to support the development of the renewable energy industries. Energy and Utility Skills have worked with Carnegie College to establish high quality provision for the traditional power sector and this development demonstrates a significant strategic intent from the College toward the Renewables Sector. Although a logical development for both the College and industry this substantial support will allow these developments to be accelerated and places Carnegie College strongly to support this rapidly expanding sector both locally and nationally.”

James Brown, Head of Renewables for Energy and Skills

This is great news for the College and for Fife. The renewables industry has the potential to

create thousands of new jobs for Fife and Central Scotland and our company is focused on providing opportunities for the school leavers in apprenticeship and management training.”

We are very pleased with this announcement. The College works very

closely with local industry and this investment is ideal timing for our area. The new centre will complement industry and the local community requirements, ensuring that we strengthen our local skills base to ensure that we maximise our opportunities in the alternative energy sectors.”

Martin Adam, Operations Director at BiFab

This is excellent news for the local region, the College and for Siemens, which is already

leading the way in green skills training in the rest of the UK. Given our strong existing position in Scotland in wind power, support of the College in this area of modern apprenticeship training to support the low carbon sector is a logical step. We look forward to being part of this exciting initiative.”

Lorraine Hubbard, Training Officer with Siemens Renewables

We are delighted to learn about this exciting development. Throughout our long

association with the College, it has always been evident that the Carnegie philosophy is to enable businesses and individuals to be at the forefront of industry developments both locally and nationally. A centre such as this will enable us all to benefit from the exciting new business and workforce opportunities emerging in the engineering sector and will ensure that the future training needs of Babcock’s employees are met.”
