The width of the canal at the above location is about 4 m (at the bottom) and the canal bank is over 6 m; avoiding the immediate vicinity of the canal bank and keeping in mind the safety of canal, it was possible to install the structure with a span of 12 m.
But ultimately the structure was designed for 16 m wide so that the same design could be utilised for larger canal width in future.
Before After
WHAT IS UNIQUE AND NOTEWORTHY OF THIS PROJECT?
Putting available resources to optimum use i.e. use of Canal top to mount Solar PV panels which also eliminates the need of land to install solar PV panels;
Minimization of the transmission and distribution loss of electricity;
Water security; Retard the growth of algae in the water; Improve the efficiency of the solar plant and
yield a higher electricity output due to canal water;
Saving of CO2 emission by 1, 280, 000 Kg per year.
FUTURE OF SOLAR ENERGY The Charanka Solar Park is the Asia’s first Solar
Park. The Solar Park will be established on 2,000 ha of arid land to generate to 590 MW solar power.
Gujarat Govt. is planning to implement Canal top solar power project this on 10% of the existing canal network of 19,000 kilometres and they estimated that 2,200 megawatts of solar power generating capacity can be installed. So there is immense potential for future expansion.
Gujarat government is coming up with new roof-top solar power policy.
New Solar PV Power Plants have been commissioned under its most discussed and successful Gujarat Solar Policy they are aiming 1000 Mwatt increment in capacity in next 5 yrs.
WIND ENERGY
INTRODUCTION TO WIND ENERGY
Gujarat government’s focus on tapping renewable energy has led to sharp rise in the capacity to generate power using wind energy in the last few years.
According to official data, wind power generations capacity in the state has increased a staggering ten times in just six years.
The Gujarat government has set out the following for the state:Water pumping windmill-design, development,
research and popularization. Setting up to stand-alone wind turbine
generators. Setting up of wind farms for power generation. Encouraging privatization of wind power
generation in the state.
WIND POWER POLICY Wind Power Policy - 2007 Amendment to Wind Power Policy GERC Regulation on Wind Power dated August
11, 2006 Wind Power Policy extension dated 19.03.2013 Wind Power Policy 2009 GEDA Wind Power Policy 2013
Dated 25th July 2013.Objective: This policy will come into force with effect
from the date of issue of this resolution and shall remain in operation up to 31st March 2016.
Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) installed and commissioned during the operative period shall become eligible for the incentives declared under this policy, for a period of twenty five years (25) from the date of commissioning or for the life span of the WTGs, whichever is earlier.
APPLICATION FORM FOR WTG PROJECT
The application form for obtaining permission for setting up of Wind farm project in the state of Gujarat shall be obtained from GEDA, Gandhinagar, on payment of Rs. 5000/- in cash or demand draft, during office hours. The application form is non-transferable.

CURRENT STATUS
Total capacity of 3114.250 MW Wind Power Projects have been installed as of 30th April,2013
Wind power generations capacity in the state has increased a staggering ten times in just six years.
GETCO (Gujarat Energy Transmission Company) will provide grid connectivity to Wind farms or permit private producers to lay transmission lines.
Today, Gujarat has already installed Wind Power Projects which is already catering to 7.6 % of the annual energy consumption of the State at an investment of Rs. 9500 crore. These Projects annually generate 3800 million units of electricity, saving 2.60 MT coal and reducing the carbon emissions levels by 3.80 million tonnes.
Tamil Nadu, which has been enjoying leadership position in wind energy sector in India, may lose out on its top position to Gujarat.
FUTURE OF WIND ENERGY IN INDIA- OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY
Offshore wind energy sector needs special attention to ensure sustainable growth. Due to this MNRE is set to launch the National Offshore Wind Energy Authority (NOWA) to proliferate deployment of offshore wind energy projects in the county.
Provisions made by Gujarat Finance Minister Nitin Patel for the country’s first offshore wind energy project in Gujarat in the State’s budget for 2013-14.
Tata Power have expressed interest in setting up offshore wind energy projects in Gujarat.
Security is one critical aspect.The government has been talking to the Indian Coast Guard about this issue. There have been reports that the large wind farms pose security issues due to complications with radar imaging.
Transmission of energy is another challenge.
BIO-ENERGY & TIDAL ENERGY
BIO-ENERGY ACTIVITIES OF GEDA - PRESENT STATUS System: Biogas PlantProcess: Anaerobic DigestionA system which helps in converting the organic waste into gaseous form of Energy is known as ‘Biogas Plant’.
System: Biomass GasificationProcess: Partial combustion of BiomassPartial combustion is carried out in absence of air or less air than the stoichiometric requirement of air for complete combustion Partial combustion produces hydrogen.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE PAST :
