  • AutoPortal India find out Renault opens bookings for Kwid

Renault, one of the budget car players in the Indian market, surprisingly does not have a vehicle in

the A-segment. Though Nissan, its cross budging partner, had launched the Datsun in 2013, and has

two vehicles in the pipeline, Renault was yet to join the fray.

But not anymore as Renault has unveiled a hatchback-based crossover called the Kwid. Unveiled at

the 2014 Auto Expo, the KWID, is a five-seater crossover underpinned by the French automakers

CMFA platform and will be produced at their Chennai factory.

Built on the same lines to that of the Datsun GO, the KWID, but, stand outs with its body cladding.

Some other not so usual features are flared wheel arches and a forward leaning stance giving it a

muscular appearance. Kwid will be the first car in the Indian market to debut the French

automakers honeycomb grille and new headlight design. The aggressive front bumper design

extends outwards and in the top spec variants houses the fog lamps. All these features gives its

name micro SUV. There is a plastic cladding at the base of the doors which are the colour of the

wheel arches. The plastic cladding sits right below the boot door and houses the number plate.

Renault has given the KWID a small spoiler which we believe will be standard across all variants.

  • From the spy shots the Renault KWID appears to have the same interior as the Pulse and the Nissan

Micra. The car gets a fully digital instrumental cluster, Media-NAV infotainment system, front power

windows and AC. While the instrument cluster, power windows and AC are expected to be standard

across all variants, we believe that the Media-NAV infotainment system will only be offered in the

    top-spec variants.

The engine is expected to be an 800 cc three-cylinder unit that will produce around 50 bhp and 90

Nm of torque. Power will go to the front wheels via a five-speed manual. For the time being, there

will be no diesel model but a 1.0-litre model with higher power figures is expected to arrive later. It

is also possible that there may be a CNG model but this will only materialize based on demand. One

can expect it to produce a maximum mileage of about 26 Kmpl.

The Kwid is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh and will compete with the

Chevrolet Spark, Tata Nano, Datsun Go and the Hyundai Eon. It will be launched during the festive

season. Dealers have already started accepting bookings in some of the selected cities. The booking

amount for the Renault Kwid ranges from Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 depending on the location of the

    dealerships.
