The Renaissance started in Italy

Characteristics of Renaissance

• Rise of merchant class.

• Patrons paid for art.

• Development of painting techniques such as perspective and more realistic art.

What is Renaissance?It’s rebirth! Scholars and learned people wanted to study the manuscripts from Greece and Rome, thinking those

civilizations were great and worthy of study again.

They wanted to imitate the buildings, science discoveries

language and writing styles of the Romans and Greeks.

Florence, Italy

• Famous center for the Medici family.

• Lorenzo the Magnificent lived there.

• Patron of artists, sculptors, writers.

• The Duomo – a domed church.• Bruncelleschi created this and

it was the greatest work of engineering up to that time!

Brunelleschi’s Duomo in Florence

• One of Brunelleschi’s most important works.

• Brunelleschi built the dome without interior supports to hold up the heavy stone and bricks.

St. Peter’s Basilica

Built over a period of 120 yrs. Many artists, were involved including Michelangelo.

• Michelangelo was a master of many artistic abilities, but he often protested that he was a sculptor.

• Sculpted out of marble.

• It took Michelangelo almost 4 ½ years to complete the ceiling alone.

• The wall behind the alter is features a painting entitled The Last Judgment, which was Michelangelo’s last major work.
