RESEARCH AsBuilt

Co-researcher with Christine Killory (ongoing)

The purpose of this research is to increase the vocabulary of contemporary architectural expression in schools of

architecture and professional offices by demonstrating how complicated design problems have been handled by

other architects to achieve beautiful, functional, innovative, sustainable and, where necessary, economical results.

This research has lead to a new biannual ongoing hardback series of 208, 9”X12” pages from Princeton

Architectural Press that seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the relationships between architectural form

and technology. The first issue was published in Spring 2006, the second in 2008 and the next two issues are

scheduled for the Spring 2012 and Fall 2013.

Shaping Terrain: City Building in the Americas. (- ongoing)

The purpose of this project is to study the relationship between urban form, architecture, technological invention.

and nature. Essays focuses on urban development in New World cities including the cities of Rio de Janeiro,

Valparaíso, Santiago, Caracas, Mendoza, Bogota, Panama, Sao Paulo and Mexico City. Original drawings, maps,

photographs and illustrations will accompany the work. The project was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim

Memorial Foundation Fellowship for the research of one of its sections. “The Hillside Elevator as a Generator of

Social and Urban Form in Valparaíso” in 1999. Other essays related to the book such as “Le Corbusier, Rio de

Janeiro and Housing: A Cross-Cultural Exchange”, “Nature: Rich and Poor Hills in the Americas”, “Demolishing

Hills, Establishing New Identities”, “Urban Slopes: The Inclined Elevators of Pittsburgh and Valparaíso” have

been accepted by peer review journals and or presented at International conferences. Grants from COR(Committee

on Research at U.C. Berkeley)have helped to defray the costs of producing drawings. The book will be published

by University Press, Florida.
