Maryland/Delaware Forage Council Southern MD Hay & Pasture

Conference January 18, 2012

Make plans to attend the Southern Maryland Hay & Forage Conference, January 18, 2012, at the Isaac Walton League Conference Facility in Waldorf, MD. Topics will be presented covering all aspects of hay and pasture production. The programs will address key issues and concerns facing hay and pasture producers.

The conferences also features displays and exhibits by numerous agribusinesses. Attendees will be able to obtain information on seed, fertilizer, equipment, fencing, etc. needed for hay and pasture production and management.

Central Maryland Vegetable Growers Meeting

January 27, 2012 This well sponsored, large grower meeting always offers a great deal of

vegetable industry information. The Central Maryland Vegetable Growers Meeting will be held on January 27, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Friendly Farm Inn, located on Foreston Rd. in Upperco, MD. See attached flyer. Pesticide recertification credits are awarded for attending this meeting.

Cost: $15.00 per person (includes lunch) when you reserve your tickets by Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Any tickets purchased after that date or at the door will cost $20.00.

February 4, 2012 The University of Maryland Extension will host the Mid-Atlantic Small Flock Poultry Expo on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at the University of Maryland Extension-Carroll County Office & Carroll County Agriculture Center, 700 Agriculture Center Drive, Westminster, Maryland, 21157. The expo will feature educational seminars on poultry nutrition, disease prevention and control, chicken breeds, egg and meat production basics, housing, pasturing, feeding and watering systems, regulations and ordinances, organic production, litter and mortality composting, breeding and egg incubation, turkey production, brooding chicks, poultry in diversified livestock operations, exotics, egg grading and handling, marketing and economics, urban poultry, and protecting your flock. Vendors will be available with live poultry and poultry related items. A poultry processing demonstration will be conducted. Producers and Extension specialists will be available for technical questions about production practices. 4-H will conduct activities and competitions. Door prizes will be awarded. Lunch and snacks will be available for purchase. See attached brochure and registration form.

Bay Area Fruit School February 15, 2012

Attention all fruit growers! Plan to attend the Bay Area Fruit School on February 15, 2012 at the WYE Research and Education Center in Queenstown, MD from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This all day meeting will provide Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credit.

January 31 to April 4 The Baltimore County office of the University of MD Extension is partnering with Future Harvest Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, and the MD Agricultural Resource Council to offer a workshop series to learn about starting and operating a successful, intensive small farm.

This program is part of a larger initiative to train new farmers in a variety of farm production areas. The focus of this program series is on small-scale, fruit and vegetable production. Each of the sessions covers topics that are applicable to a variety of agricultural operations including small fruits, tree fruits and vegetables using conventional, sustainable and organic methods. The program is open to all and intended for people interested in starting or improving their small farm skills by learning from knowledgeable University faculty and owners of other farm operations in the area. Participants will learn marketing, production and business skills necessary to become successful market farmers. See attached flyer for complete dates and topics.

This series of classes is scheduled in the evenings; as indicated on the schedule (Please note the first session is on a Tuesday and all other sessions are on Wednesdays). Registration is required and the cost for the program series is $40 per person, the fee is for educator expenses and program materials. For registration or further information,

 From the North: (directions given from Hanover, PA to the Ag Center) Take Rt. 94 South (becomes MD Rt. 30 at the state line). Follow 30 to Manchester and turn right on Rt. 27. Follow Rt. 27 to Rt. 140 East (in Westminster). Turn left onto the ramp to 140 East and travel to the first traffic light. Turn right onto Center Street. Take Center Street through two traffic lights to Gist Road. Turn right on Gist Road and follow signs to new entrance. Turn right onto new Ag Center drive.

From the South: Take Interstate 270 North to Rt. 27. Follow Rt. 27 to Kate Wagner Road. (Kate Wagner Road intersects Rt. 27 before you reach the city of Westminster) Make a right onto Kate Wagner Road (which intersects Rt. 27 at a traffic light) and follow approximately 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Gist Road. Con-tinue on Gist Road until you reach Smith Ave at stop sign. Continue on Gist Road about 1/2 block and make left at new Ag Center entrance.

From the East: From Baltimore Beltway 695, take Interstate 795 north toward Westminster. Follow the signs onto MD 140 and take 140 into Westminster. Turn left onto Center Street. Take Center Street through two traffic lights to Gist Road. Turn right on Gist Road and follow signs to new entrance. turn right onto new Ag Center drive.

From the West: Take I-70 East to the Mt. Airy/Route 27 Exit. Head North on Rt. 27 toward Westminster for approximately 15 miles. Make a right onto Kate Wagner Road (which intersects Rt. 27 at a traffic light) and follow approximately 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Gist Road. Continue on Gist Road until you reach Smith Ave at stop sign. Continue on Gist Road about 1/2 block and make left at new Ag Center entrance.

This session focuses on the basics of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), raw food product safety and handling techniques to maintain product quality. The requirement for organic certification will also be discussed.

March 14 6:30 pm - 8:45 pm The Business Plan and Management for Your Small Farm Topics will include: Tools for determining profitability, using production/cost data to make good business decisions, and understanding your farm operation within the context of your family finances. Actual small farm income and expenses are used in the discussion.

March 21 6:30 pm - 8:45 pm Small Farm Business and Marketing Experiences A panel of local small farm operators present critical decisions and experiences with establishing and marketing their operation.

March 28 6:30 pm - 8:45 pm Integrating Livestock into a Small FarmSmall scale animal production fits well with crop production on a small farm. The discussion will include sheep, goats, chickens and beef. In addition, speakers will share experiences with bees and horses.
