JACKSON HOLE OVERVIEW

Jackson vs. Jackson Hole Jackson or Jackson Hole? This is the question that your family and friends who do not live in the area will be asking. The answer is both. Jackson Hole is a valley that comprises the following communities: Jackson, Wilson, Teton Village, Kelly, Moose and Moran. If you are moving to any one of these communities then, yes, you will be living in Jackson Hole. The main difference is in the postal system. Each community has its own post office. Our Backyard Jackson Hole encompasses Grand Teton National Park (est.1929) and is just south of Yellowstone National Park (est. 1872). The establishment of these parks has brought many adventurous visitors to the region who spread the word. As a resident, you quickly learn that you share your home with over 3,000,000 visitors from all over the world in the summers. Winter visitation is also high. We average around 500,000 visitors. The Grand Scheme of Things Jackson Hole is surrounded by stunning mountain ranges including the Teton, Gros Ventre, Absaroka and Snake River Ranges. The Grand Teton is the region’s highest peak at 13,766 feet above sea level. When Teddy Roosevelt first laid eyes on the Teton Range, he said they "are what mountains are supposed to look like."

Your New Neighbors

Native Americans, fur trappers, cattle ranchers, cowboys, movie stars and tycoons have each played their parts in Jackson Holes’ past. Many unique characters call Jackson Hole home and everyone has a special connection to the outdoors. The Census Bureau released an estimate of 21,548 people living in Teton County in 2011. Jackson Hole has a friendly, small town feel and laidback western attitude.

Artful Living

Enjoying outdoor activities is only part of the story

when living in Teton County. With the Center for

the Arts, Grand Teton Music Festival, the National

Museum of Wildlife Art, the Art Association,

Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum and

over thirty art galleries, Jackson is also a premier

cultural center. Visit www.jacksonholegalleries.com

for more information.

History and Development Before 1800, Jackson Hole was home to Native Americans who spent summer months hunting the abundant wildlife. In

the early 1800s the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery began exploring the mountain west. John Colter, one of the members of the expedition, set out on his own to scout for a fur trading company. The tales he told about northwestern Wyoming seemed unbelievable, but many famous trappers followed Colter’s lead. Jim Bridger, Jedediah Smith, William Sublette and David Jackson were some of Colter’s contemporaries and their names were given to many local landmarks. It was David Jackson who gave his name to the valley. For the mountain men a "hole" indicated a high valley that was surrounded by mountains and so the valley south of Yellowstone became known as “Jackson’s Hole”. Later it was shortened to “Jackson Hole.” French Canadian trappers named the three prominent peaks of the area in a less traditional fashion, “Les Trois Tetons.” “The Three Breasts” became known as the Grand Teton, Middle Teton and South Teton. JACKSON HOLE TRADITIONS

The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce holds a number of special events throughout the year that bring community members and visitors together to enjoy the unique culture of Jackson Hole. Jackson Hole WinterFest WinterFest is an eleven-day festival that brings these opportunities together from the Shriner's All American Cutter Races to special winter performances from Grand Teton Music Festival. Many community organizations join together to present a series of events that delights winter enthusiasts who love to be out in the snow as well as those who prefer to spend their time beside a crackling hearth. ElkFest ElkFest, a weekend of activities built around the world famous Jackson Hole Boy Scout Elk Antler Auction, is an exciting time for celebrating nature, outdoor skills, hunting, and ecological education and awareness. Every spring thousands of elk wintering on the National Elk Refuge lose their antlers before they migrate to their summer range. The Boy Scouts assist the Refuge staff with harvesting the shed antlers and auction them to bidders from around the world who use them to make furniture, wall decorations and jewelry. This annual event, which includes the Howdy Pardners High Noon Chili Cook-Off, the Mountain Man Rendezvous and Antler Rendezvous supports the National Elk Refuge with 80% of the proceeds going back to habitat enhancement projects. Weekend before Memorial Day

Jackson Hole Traditions continued Old West Days Celebrating the Heritage of the West! Jackson Hole

has long been referred to as "The Last of the Old

West," and with the community’s rich history, it’s no

wonder Old West Days is a favorite among visitors

and locals alike. Visitors from all over the country

come to delight in the live music, theatrical

entertainment, arts and crafts, delicious food, rodeo

events and much, much more.

Memorial Day Weekend

Fourth of July The day is historically filled with family-friendly

activities including a pancake breakfast, Howdy

Pardners Fourth of July parade, Grand Teton Music

Festival’s “Music in the Hole” and world-class

fireworks displays at the base of Snow King

Mountain and in Teton Village!

Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival The Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival is widely recognized as one of the premier cultural events in the Rocky Mountain West. Thousands of art enthusiasts are drawn here each year to experience the beautiful art and breathtaking natural surroundings that make Jackson Hole a leading cultural center. Visitors will appreciate the works of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists along with an exceptional array of events featuring music, cuisine and wine. More than fifty events round out our eleven-day festival. Second and third week in September Jackson Hole Marathon The Jackson Hole Marathon is a must do for runners looking for a destination experience with stunning mountain vistas. The marathon course will start near the Town Square in the historic town of Jackson Hole, wind through neighborhoods within the town and then utilize the community pathway system to bring participants to the finish line in Teton Village, home of the iconic Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Runners and their support teams enjoy the variety of health and wellness experiences offered by many businesses and nonprofit organizations including yoga studios, healthful cuisine, tranquil spas and more. Trick or Treat on Town Square The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce is pleased to host “Trick or Treat” on the Town Square each year on Halloween. The event is traditionally held from 3:00-5:30pm with the

costume contest at 4:30pm in the center of the Town Square. The costume contest has prizes for different age categories -- grown-ups are included! Participating Town Square merchants and other businesses and organizations are vital to this

community tradition. Town Square Lighting Jackson Hole shops prepare for the holidays with sparkling lights, festive garlands and beautiful window displays. The finishing touch is the lighting of the Town Square! The annual Town Square Lighting Ceremony takes place the day after Thanksgiving from 5:00-7:00pm. This favorite holiday event features the arrival of Santa Claus along with cookies, carols and hot cocoa! Santa on the Square Visiting Santa on the Jackson Town Square has become a tradition for many local families and delights holiday visitors. The Town Square is dressed for the occasion with thousands of sparkling lights illuminating the famous elk antler arches and towering trees. Santa listens to holiday wishes at the Stage Stop building near the southwest entrance to the Town Square. December 15th-24th Change of Seasons
