HANDICAP PARKING REMINDER – With the start of school just around the corner, we would like to remind parishioners that the handicap parking on Water Street is marked for Saturday and Sunday use only and must be kept clear during school hours to allow access for the school buses. As such, there is to be no parking in those four spaces from the hours of 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday, during the school year. When school is not in session, evenings during the school year and anytime over summer break, the spaces may be used. Thank you!

FROMTHEPASTOR’SDESK

I would like to welcome the Holy Angels School faculty and students as they begin a new school year. May the students be filled with a desire to learn and grow in the Faith and may the Lord guide the teachers with wisdom, understanding and a firm devotion to God. St. John Baptist de la Salle was canonized in 1900 and on May 15, 1950, Pope Pius X proclaimed him the patron saint of teachers. St. John Baptist de la Salle is considered the founder of the first Catholic schools. His greatest message to his disciples was to develop the spirit of religion in the souls of their pupils. He writes that there are only two duties of a Christian; knowing God and loving God. He believed without the fulfillment of these obligations a person cannot achieve salvation and therefore, cannot be fully Christian. To accomplish these duties, students needed knowledge and most importantly, catechism that would both instruct them and provide the socialization that would add to them becoming “better Christians.” In fact, de la Salle charges teachers with the responsibility “to inspire them [students] with the Christian spirit” and calls this “the greatest miracle one can perform.”

We ask the Lord to keep our children safe this school year and may we all be diligent in watching out for our young people as they cross the street before and after school.

“Your faith should be a shining light for those whom you teach.”St. John Baptist de la Salle

SAINT OF THE WEEK

POPE ST. PIUS XFeast Day: August 21st

Pope St. Pius X was born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto in 1835. The son of a local postman, the future saint was raised in poverty and was accustomed to many hardships. He studied Latin under the local priest and was able to enter the seminary, being ordained to the priesthood in 1858 at the age of 23. After teaching at the seminary in a local diocese, he was raised to the sacred office of Bishop in the Diocese of Mantua, in northern Italy. Thirteen years later, he was named a Cardinal and made the Patriarch of Venice. In 1903, Sarto was elected to the Pontificate and chose the name Pius, most notably after Pope Pius IX (1846-78). During his Papacy, the saint normalized the receiving of Holy Communion, asking that Catholics receive the Blessed Sacrament as often as they are able, a notable change in the tradition of the Church, in which before this most Catholic received Communion only once or twice a year. He also encouraged the youth to receive First Communion at a younger age. Besides these changes, the Pope also wrote many encyclicals denouncing the Modernist movement within the church, a movement which he saw as an evil to be rooted out. Pius X also mandated the creation of Parochial Catechism classes to allow all Catholics to understand the true teachings of the Church. He also brought about a renewal in Liturgical music, most notably the restoration of Gregorian Chant, spearheaded by the Monks of Solesmes Abbey in France. A known aesthetic, Pope St. Pius X died in the odor of sanctity on the 20th of August 1914, in the beginning stages of the First World War. He was Canonized in 1954 by Ven. Pope Pius XII
