The longest running multimedia summer art school in New Zealand proudly hosted at the Quarry Arts Centre since 1985.

PARTICIPATE

We have been hosting the Summer Do Art School for 30 years at the Quarry Arts Centre. Whether you are a renowned artist, first timer or DIY experimenter, you are invited to embrace creativity, learn something new and be part of the Northland artistic landscape.

LEARN

We gather together renowned local, national and international tutors, to share their knowledge and experience. We focus on providing courses where people with a creative interest can be immersed in a learning environment developing their skills through hands-on creativity.

DO

The courses vary but the intent is generally to focus on method and technique while ending the course with a finished art work. The Summer Do encourages an ever evolving approach to self-expression, even long after the week is over, so that you can keep on making with your new inspiration.

A BIT ABOUT THE QUARRY ARTS CENTRE

In keeping with our mission of nurturing the creative spirit of Northland, the Quarry Arts Centre regularly hosts creative workshops, courses and classes. The Quarry Arts Centre has been serving the local community for more than three decades by positively promoting growth in the arts; providing professional artists with studio space, housing a co-operative shop and exhibition gallery, as well as, being an inviting venue for local community events. The Quarry Arts Centre is open to visitors 7 days a week. Visitors will find a friendly and welcoming atmosphere as they

wander in the bush clad surroundings. Within this unique setting is the Quarry Studio Café, offering a fresh seasonal

menu and barista coffee.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AT THE DO

Creative learning and a real connectivity between people, place and process is what makes our Summer Do one of the

most exciting events in the New Zealand art calendar.

We promote not only the passing on of knowledge from one person to another, but also the passion for creativity that

community inspires. With scattered social events throughout the week the Do brings about a shared experience that

encourages education through fun and collaboration.

WELCOME AND PECHA KUCHA PICNIC Saturday 9

th – 4 to 10pm

By attending the Summer Do you are joining the Quarry community and we want to make sure that you feel welcome and know your way around. The Quarry Office will be open from 3 for any last questions, payment and arrangements. Workrooms will also be open so that you can drop of your materials and unpack. A formal greetings hosted by the Quarry resident artists, staff and board of trustees, will give you your bearings and welcome you to our creative place. There will then be time to mingle and explore the grounds and artists’ studios and get comfortable for some entertainment with your BYO picnic. At dust the Summer Do Pecha Kucha will begin to kick start your creative imagination.

TUTORS EXHIBITION Monday 11

th - 4 to 6pm

Summer Do tutors are invited to bring work to display in the Yvonne Rust Gallery for the duration of the Do. This is everyone’s opportunity to get up close and admire the work of our talented tutors. This is an informal occasion where the Quarry will provide some light nibbles and a drink to wet your whistle on a hot summer evening after a day of learning and creating.

ART-LYMPICS Thursday 13

th 5.30pm

Being the last day for most of the courses we like to round things of with a bit of playful creativity. Teams work together to complete a variety of art based challenges, aimed at producing fun art rather than fine art. Challenges include… painting pole-vault, sculpture sprints, performance marathon and wordsmith hurdles. While it is athletic in name – let’s face it, we are an art centre not a sports ground – ArtLympics is unfussy, fun and done from the comfort of a chair.
