RELIABILITY ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

• GENESIS

The M.Tech/Phd programme in Reliability engineering

was started at IIT Bombay in 1983. Present strength is 12

M.Tech.s and 2 Ph.D./yr

• RELIABILITY AWARENESS IN INDIAN INDUSTRIES:

Over the past few years most of the large corporations

(both Indian and Multinationals) have shown increasing

interest in “reliability” improvement and growth. This is

clear from the job placements of students in top

organizations and in-house courses on reliability.

Thrust Of The Course• "Quality” is closely linked to “Reliability”

– Reliability is a dynamic aspect of Quality.

– Reliability accounts for ageing of systems and components over its operational profile.

• Predicting the workability and lifetime of a product, before it is shipped, has tremendous economic value in reducing servicing costs, warranty commitments and in keeping the good name of the company.

• So, in today's world of extreme competition, every engineer should know the basics of reliability engineering.

CEP CourseSATYAM-GE Reliability Proficiency Course

• One semester program with 36 contact hours along with assignments, mid-term and end-term for engineers from Satyam-GE(Sept.2002-Mar.2003) to bring down the service call rates of GE appliances world-wide (1 million appliances at the rate of USD100 per service call).

• The course was approved by GE,USA for the training of the engineers.

• The training of second batch of engineers is going to commence shortly on identical pattern of the first batch.

• This is likely to continue further for more batches as an on- going programme.

CEP Course: Video Recording of Reliability Proficiency Course

• Video recorded course material will be used for all future courses . These video lectures can be used for offering similar courses to other industries like Godrej, Larsen and Toubro etc.

“New” RELIABILITY ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

• RELIABILITY IN COMPUTING SYSTEMS:RELIABILITY IN COMPUTING SYSTEMS:

IITB is probably the only IIT planning to offer

“Reliability in Computing Systems” as a Post-graduate

course. An early start to this programme is very

important considering that Computer Software and IT

are going to be the highest money earners in the

coming decades.

Proposed M.Tech./Ph.D. Programme Reliability Engineering in Computing Systems

An advanced level interdisciplinary programme in Reliability Engineering that is focused on modern day computing requirements in terms of reliability and performance of large applications.

The syllabus would cover all aspects of ‘Computer Systems Quality Assurance” as well as “Design of interfaces for integrating very large software applications”

This ‘new’ programme would have a starting strength of 8 M.Tech. and would grow to 20 M. Tech. in 3 years time.
