Marine Court Walkway Repairs – CU Boulder Structural engineering for the investigation of distressed walkways, stair landings and columns on the exterior of the family housing buildings. Evaluation and analysis led to detailed procedures for removal of distressed material, and application of high-performance materials to help protect and insure long-term performance. Revised connection details were developed to reduce restraint, and prevent recurrence of column damage. The documents included sequencing of repairs to minimize closure of access to units.

Denver Performing Arts Center Galleria Precast Repair – Denver Structural investigation of precast long-span double tees which had been subjected to water infiltration over several years, leading to corrosion and loss of concrete cross-section. Miro engineers developed a cost e effective steel mechanism to safely transfer bearing of rebuilt tee ends.

Recreation Center Renovation and Expansion - University of Colorado - Boulder Structural engineering services for renovation of the existing 235,000 square-foot facility, and addition of 69,200 square feet for a new ice rink and fitness atrium. The existing cast-in-place concrete structure presented dimensional challenges due to relatively low floor-to floor heights, as well as the need for complete replacement of HVAC systems. The extent of the renovation required a lateral analysis in accordance with current IBC Code criteria. New engineered shear walls were installed in accordance with the analysis.

Building 500 Investigation and Renovation, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center - Aurora S. A. Miro, Inc. team was commissioned by the Army to perform a structural investigation of the 320,000 square foot Main Hospital Building at Fitzsimons. The eight-story concrete structure was built in 1940. In the absence of existing documents, the Miro team coordinated sampling, remote scanning, and laboratory testing of concrete and reinforcing steel throughout the building, so as to develop criteria for the load capacity of the structure. Areas of potential deficiency were identified, based upon current building code criteria. Renovation work included external post-tensioning and the addition of external shear stirrups, to enhance the load capacity of the existing structure to meet code requirements. The Inn at Auraria / Hotel Curtis - Denver Structural engineering for the condition survey of a 30-story brick building including field investigation, procurement of samples, structural analysis, and development of repair schemes for 100,000 square foot brick facade. The work included distress analysis, report preparation, and preparation of repair construction drawings. Repair documents were developed for conversion of the upper 14 floors of the building into student housing. The scope of work included geotechnical testing; seismic and wind analysis; floor slab modeling and strengthening using carbon fiber reinforcing; and corrective details for floors and wall panels.

Sustainability, Energy and Environmental Complex Structural engineering and site development for a two-phase project. Phase 1 involves construction of a four story, 84,000 square foot wet laboratory building. The project was sited to be outside the 100-year flood plain. Phase 2 consists of renovation of the existing 289,000 square foot MacAllister Building, including assessment of the floors to accommodate the vibration criteria of new laboratory equipment per the lab/office program of the building.

Utility Tunnel InvestigationsS. A. Miro, Inc. was retained to perform structural investigations and analysis of the existing utility tunnel system for the Bouler Campus. Finite-element modeling of tunnel walls and overburden soils was used to develop actual loading conditions as well as material stresses. The results showed that replacement was in many cases not necessary. The Miro team developed structural models and installation documents for support stanchions to strengthen existing tunnel walls and roofs, utilizing composite non-ferrous materials that resist corrosion.

New Heating and Cooling Plant and Site Distribution S. A. Miro, Inc. provided civil engineering services for the development of the site, utilities and supporting services to the Plant. Working from the project master plan, the Miro team designed approximately 13,230 feet of new steam and chilled water distribution systems that extend westward from the new Plant into the main Campus. The majority of the systems are direct-bury, but approximately 500 feet of the steam system is in new tunnel extending to the existing Business Tunnel. . Miro staff developed a Conflict Report during master planning which identified the location and extent of interferences between the new systems and existing utilities, surface improvements and landscaping. Building RL-3 Chiller Replacement Investigation and analysis of existing Research Laboratory buildings for alternate locations of new cooling tower and chiller. Design of steel superstructure framing for rooftop support of unit, and distribution of loading to appropriate elements of the existing structure. Cherry Creek Parking Structures – Denver Miro was asked to evaluate three parking structures, which been recommended for demolition by another consultant. The structures are 3- level precast, 5-level cast in place post-tensioned, and five level waffle slab structures, providing 954 total parking spaces. In each case, the Miro team was able to develop repair schemes that are a fraction of demolition and replacment cost, with minimal disruption to existing users.
